＜正＞This paper presents a method of estimating dietary exposure to dioxins in specific region from monitoring data of dioxins concentration in seafood by catching area and information of seafood circulation.Monte- Carlo method was applied to take into account both the uncertainty of measured value of dioxins levels in fishes and variability between fish species.The seafood circulation was simulated with a linear programming （LP） model.Dietary exposure to dioxins in seafood in seven regions in Japan was estimated and compared with the results of Total Dietary Studies （TDS）.No significant geographical variability of dietary exposure to dioxins in seafood was observed for general population in Japan.

Ice-Shielding Models for Self-Preservation of Gas Hydrates

The self-preservation of methane hydrate is a key process in its engineering applications because the hydrate can survive for a significant period under atmospheric pressure and moderate temperature. Some experiments have predicted that the shielding ice formed on the hydrate surface after initial dissociation of the hydrate plays an important role in the self-preservation effect. We propose ice-shielding models of gas hydrates to investigate the dissociation rates quantitatively, including the self-preservation process, at temperatures below the ice-melting point and at atmospheric pressure. Three general models are constructed for two temperature ranges. The rate-determining process for the lower temperature range is hydrate dissociation, and those for the higher range are gas diffusion through ice or hydrate layers, which depend on the thickness of the shielding-ice layer. Our models suggest that the extent of self-preservation depends on temperature, original hydrate size, and guest substances, which can explain the experimental results.

Genetic polymorphisms of MAFK, encoding a small Maf protein, are associated with susceptibility to ulcerative colitis in Japan

AIM To investigate whether single nucleotide polymorphisms in maf protein K(MAFK), which encodes the MAFK, lead to increased susceptibility to ulcerative colitis in the Japanese population. METHODS This case control study examined the associations between MAFK single nucleotide polymorphisms(rs4268033 G>A, rs3735656 T>C and rs10226620 C>T) and ulcerative colitis susceptibility in 174 patients with ulcerative colitis(UC) cases, and 748 subjects without no lower abdominal symptoms, diarrhea or hematochezia(controls). In addition, as the second controls, we set 360 subjects, who have an irregular bowel movement without abnormal lower endoscopic findings(IBM controls).RESULTS The genotype frequency of rs4268033 AA and allelic frequency of the rs4268033 A allele were significantly higher in the UC cases than in both controls(P = 0.0005 and < 0.0001, P = 0.015 and 0.0027 vs controls and IBM controls, respectively). Logistic regression analysis after adjustment for age and gender showed that the rs4268033 AA and rs3735656 CC genotypes were significantly associated with susceptibility to UC development(OR = 2.63, 95%CI: 1.61-4.30, P = 0.0001 and OR = 1.81; 95%CI: 1.12-2.94, P = 0.015, respectively). Similar findings were observed by the comparison with IBM controls. In addition, the rs4268033 AA genotype was significantly associated with all phenotypes of UC except early onset. There was no significant association between rs10226620 and ulcerative colitis. CONCLUSION Our results provide the first evidence that MAFK genetic polymorphisms are significantly associated with susceptibility to UC development. In particular, rs4268033 is closely associated with an increased risk for the development of UC.

Relationship between Gastric Stasis in the Remnant Stomach and Interdigestive Migrating Complex in Patients after Pylorus-Preserving Gastrectomy for Gastric Cancer

Objectives: The demerit of pylorus-preserving gastrectomy (PPG) is gastric stasis in the remnant stomach (GSRS). We investigated the relationship between postgastrectomy disorder (PGD), especially GSRS, and interdigestive migrating complex (IMC) in PPG patients. Background: The cause of GSRS is still unknown. Therefore, we studied relationship between GSRS and IMC. Methods: 24 PPG patients (16 men and 8 women;mean, 61.2 years) were divided into groups A (12 patients without GSRS) and B (12 patients with GSRS). The relationship between GSRS and IMC was studied. Results: Length of the antral cuff (LAC) was significantly longer in group A than group B (P < 0.0001). IMC and appetite were significantly more common in group A than in group B (P = 0.0465, P = 0.0186, respectively). Postprandial abdominal fullness (PAF) was significantly more common in group B than in group A (P = 0.0061). Reflux esophagitis (RE) and body weight loss were found in group B more than in group A. Dumping syndrome was not found in either group. Endoscopic gastritis was found significantly more in group B than in group A (P = 0.0047). Conclusions: In PPG patients with a short LAC, GSRS may occur by the decrease of IMC occurrence.

EVALUATION OF AXILLARY LYMPH NODE STATUS IN BREAST CANCER WITH MRI

Objective:We performed a retrospective study to establish the optimalradiological criteria for axillary lymph node metastases from breast cancer by measuringall dissected nodes,and to determine whether magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)couldreliably reveal axillary involvement.Methods:Pathological findings and MRI scans of 202patients with invasive breast cancer were reviewed.The long-and short-axis dimensions ofall level Ⅰ and Ⅱ lymph nodes were measured microscopically,and then the long-to-shortaxis(L/S)ratio of each node was calculated.These parameters were compared withpathological nodal status to define radiological criteria for axillary involvement.MRI wascarried iut using T1-weighted spin-eho sequences in the coronal and sagittal planes.OnMRI,every detected lymph node was measured and the shape of the nodal cortex was alsoexamined.Then the diagnostic ability of MRI was assessed using these morphologic criteri-a.Results:On histopathological examinations of 4043 dissected lymph nodes,a long-axisdime
