We report the charge-changing cross sections(σ_(cc))of 24 p-shell nuclides on both hydrogen and carbon at about 900A MeV,of which^(8,9)Li,^(10–12)Be,^(10,14,15)B,^(14,15,17–22)N and^(16)O on hydrogen and^(8,9)Li on carbon are for the first time.Benefiting from the data set,we found a new and robust relationship between the scaling factor of the Glauber model calculations and the separation energies of the nuclei of interest on both targets.This allows us to deduce proton radii(R_p)for the first time from the cross sections on hydrogen.Nearly identical R_p values are deduced from both target data for the neutron-rich carbon isotopes;however,the R_p from the hydrogen target is systematically smaller in the neutron-rich nitrogen isotopes.This calls for further experimental and theoretical investigations.

Transmission of walnut-feeding skills from mother to young in wood mice (Apodemus speciosus)

Mammalian feeding behavior is often acquired or improved by learning. Social learners are thought to attain novel information or skills faster and at lower cost than asocial learners. In this study, we examined what types of learning affect the acquisition of efficient feeding behavior by the wood mouse Apodemus speciosus when feeding on large, hard-shelled walnuts. In house cages, na?ve mice acquired an efficient feeding manner during the 14-day conditioning to walnuts, suggesting individual trial-and-error learning contributes to their feeding skills. Social factors such as learning from walnuts that have been opened by other individuals or by observing walnut consumption by proficient conspecifics did not affect the rate of acquisition of efficient feeding. However, weaned offspring could eat walnuts more efficiently and frequently if the mother had been given walnuts during her rearing period. Thus, the skill is likely transmitted between the mother and offspring in addition to individual self-learning.

Variations in the Course of the Inferior Gluteal Nerve and Artery: A Case Report and Literature Review

Variations in the course of the inferior gluteal nerve and artery were observed in Japanese cases (4/94 sides). In these variation cases, the inferior gluteal nerve exited the pelvis from the upper edge of the piriformis (suprapiriformis foramen) in 4/4 sides (4.26%). In 2/4 sides (2.13%), the normal inferior gluteal artery was not observed, except that a fine artery exited the pelvis from the inferior piriformis foramen to form an “arch” with the superior gluteal artery under the gluteal maximus in 1/4 side. Moreover, in 1/4 side, a twig of the internal pudendal artery exited pelvis from inferior piriformis foramen and distributed to the surrounding tissues. The present observations of the inferior gluteal nerve and artery course are very important and useful for surgeons and nurses.

Superoxide dismutases (SODs) catalyze the dismutation of superoxide and play an important role in reducing oxidative stress in plants. Based on in-gel SOD activity staining, chloroplasts of the moss Physcomitrella patens have two CuZn-SODs as the major SOD isozymes and minor SODs, including a Fe-SOD and two Mn-SODs. To investigate the contribution of chloroplastic SODs to stress tolerance in P. patens, we generated a double mutant lacking chloroplastic CuZn-SOD genes. The mutant did not show any differences in comparison to the wild type based on the growth of protonemata on normal and high-salt media, extractable activities of the other SODs after culture on normal and high-salt media, and inhibition of Fv/Fm under stress conditions (high-salt, high-light, and high-temperature). These results indicate that chloroplastic CuZn-SODs do not play a principal role in oxidative stress tolerance in chloroplasts under the investigated conditions. These findings explain the previously reported unusual response of P. patens to copper deficiency, in which chloroplastic CuZn-SODs are preferentially inactivated but cytosolic CuZn-SODs are unaffected.

Relationship between Social Capital and Cognitive Functions among Community-Based Elderly

The concept of social capital encompasses all relationships and networks among people in a local community or society as a whole. It has been found to be associated with the health and daily living status of people. Furthermore, an association between social capital and cognitive functions among the elderly has been suggested in recent years. However, the number of such reports is very few. Hence, the present study aims to evaluate the relationship between social capital and cognitive functions among the elderly living in a local community in Japan. A questionnaire survey was administered to 192 elderly individuals belonging to 10 neighborhood elderly groups. A regression analysis was conducted to determine the relationship between cognitive functions and the level of engagement with the local community, after adjusting for age, gender, and symptoms of depression. Valid responses were collected from 145 participants (mean age: 75.3 years). An analysis of the data concerning the level of engagement with the local community revealed a significant difference in the cognitive function scores between the group of people who indicated that they had someone they could consult (n = 69) and the group that indicated they had no one to consult (n = 76) (regression coefficient: -0.61, p = 0.0038, 95% confidence interval: -1.02 to -0.20). This result indicates the existence of a significant correlation between social capital and cognitive functions of the elderly living in a local community. In future studies, we need to investigate the same with a larger number of participants from a wider geographical area, and by incorporating more indicators for a comprehensive evaluation of social capital.

Characterization of an Epiphytic Bacterium Neptunomonassp. BPy-1 on the Gametophytes of a Red Alga Pyropia yezoensis

The established culture of gametophytes of the red alga Pyropia yezoensis (TU-1) is superficially colonized by epiphytic bacteria. By 16S rRNA sequencing, 6 bacterial species were identified, and a culturable bacterium, Neptunomonas sp. BPy-1, was isolated. The 16S rRNA sequences of BPy-1 showed 100% identity with that of Neptunomonas sp. 0536, a probiotic bacterium found in greenshell mussels in New Zealand. Physiological tests revealed that 22 characters were identical between BPy-1 and 0536, but that 4 characters differed. BPy-1 cannot grow in the artificial seawater used for the culture of gametophytes. BPy-1 can grow in the artificial seawater with ethanol or butanol but not in methanol or propanol. To determine the effect of BPy-1 on gametophyte growth, BPy-1 colonization was reduced by 80% using a multi-enzyme cleaner. Changing the cleaner concentration yielded two types of gametophytes, a compressed or callus-like form and a nearly normal form. BPy-1 promoted the growth of the treated gametophytes with relatively normal form, while it showed less effect on compressed gametophytes. These findings suggested that BPy-1 promotes the growth of damaged gametophytes but does not affect the development of normal gametophytes.

OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the systemic action of electroacupuncture and laserpuncture in the repair of excisional cutaneous injuries on the back of adult female Wistar rats.METHODS:Ninety animals were divided into three experimental groups:C-control;E-treated with electroacupuncture[acupoints:Feishu(BL13),Geshu(BL17),Zusanli(ST36)];L-treated with laserpuncture(same acupoints)and euthanized on the 7 th,14 th and 21 st days for tissue removal and preparation for histomorphometric and biochemical(dosages,zymography and Western blotting)analysis.RESULTS:The number of fibroblasts in the E and L groups presented higher values than the C on the14 th and 21 st days.The number of granulocytes was lower than C on the 21 st day in groups E and L.The total number of newly formed vessels increased on the 21 st day and was higher in both treatments when compared to C.The birefringent collagen fibers detected on the 21 st day was lower in groups E and L than group C.The glycosaminoglycans and hydroxyproline amount was similar among groups throughout the experimental period.The active isoform of matrixmetallo proteinase(MMP)-2 and the latent isoform of MMP-9 did not show any differences among all groups and experimental periods.The amount of collagenⅠpresented higher values in the L group on the 14 th day and in the E and L groups on the 21 st day.For typeⅢcollagen,groups E and L presented values lower than C in all experimental periods.The amount of transforming growth factor-β1 in the E and L groups showed higher amounts than C on the 7 th day and lower on the 14 th and 21 st days.For vascular endothelial growth factor,E and L groups presented similar and lower values than C on the 7 th and 14 th days,respectively,and similar on the 21 st day.CONCLUSION:The therapies evaluated in this article stimulated fibroblast proliferation,neoangiogenesis and altered the reorganization of collagen fibers in the repair of excisional injuries in female adult rats.
