Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), a class of anionic clays consisting of brucite-like host layers and interlayer anions, have been widely investigated in the last decade due to their promising applications in many areas such as catalysis, ion separation and adsorption. Owing to the highly tunable compositi on and uniform distribution of metal cations in the brucite-like layers, as well as the facile exchangeability of intercalated anions, LDHs can be modified and functionalized to form various nanostructures/composites through versatile processes such as anion intercalation and exfoliation, decoration of nanoparticles, selfassembly with other two-dimensional (2D) materials, and controlled growth on conductive supports (e.g., nanowire arrays, nano tubes, 3D foams). In this article, we briefly review the recent advances on both the LDH nano structures and functionalized composites toward the applications in energy conversion, especially for water oxidation.

Aim： To report two cases of the left testicular artery arching over the left renal vein （LRV） before running downward to the testis. Methods： The subjects were obtained from two Japanese cadavers. During the student course of gross-anatomical dissection, the anatomical relationship between the testicular vessels and the renal vein was specifically observed. Results： The arching left testicular artery arose from the aorta below the LRV and made a loop around the LRV, which appeared to be mildly compressed between the arching artery and the psoas major muscle. Conclusion： Clinically, compression of the LRV between the abdominal aorta and the superior mesenteric artery occasionally induces LRV hypertension, resulting in varicocele, orthostatic protenuria and hematuria. Considering that the incidence of a left arching testicular artery is higher than that of a right one, an arching left artery could be an additional cause of LRV hypertension. （Asian J Androl 2006 Jan; 8： 107-110）

Rutile-type fluorides have been proven to be active components in the context of emerging antiferromagnetic devices. However, controlled synthesis of low-dimensional, in particular two-dimensional (2D),fluorides in a predictable and deterministic manner remains unrealized because of a lack of efficient anisotropic control, which impedes their further development in reduced dimensions. We report here that altered passivation of{110}growing facets can direct the synthesis of rutile-type fluoride nanocrystals into well-defined zero-dimensional (0D) particulates, one-dimensional (1D) rods and 2D sheets in a colloidal approach. The obtained nanocrystals show positive exchange bias and enhanced magnetic transition temperature from the coexistence of long-range antiferromagnetic order and disordered surface spins,making them strong alternatives for flexible magnetic devices and sensors.

AIM:To assess the diagnostic success and outcome among patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding who underwent total enteroscopy with double-balloon ***:Total enteroscopy was attempted in 156 patients between August 2003 and June 2008 at Hiroshima University Hospital and achieved in 75 (48.1%).It is assessed whether sources of bleeding were identified,treatment methods,complications,and 1-year outcomes (including re-bleeding) after treatment,and we compared re-bleeding rates among ***:The source of small bowel bleeding was identified in 36 (48.0%) of the 75 total enteroscopy patients;the source was outside the small bowel in 11 patients (14.7%) and not identified in 28 patients (37.3%).Sixty-one of the 75 patients were followed up for more than 1 year (27.2 ± 13.3 mo).Four (6.6%) of these patients showed signs of re-bleeding during the first year,but bleeding did not recur after *** statistical significance was not reached,a marked difference was found in the re-bleeding rate between patients in whom total enteroscopy findings were positive (8.6%,3/35) and negative (3.8%,1/26) (3/35 vs 1/26,P=0.63).CONCLUSION:A good outcome can be expected for patients who undergo total enteroscopy and receive proper treatment for the source of bleeding in the small bowel.

Carr.)and its hybrid are economically important coniferous trees widely grown in the Northern ***-level ozone(O3) concentrations have increased since the preindustrial era,and research projects showed that Japanese larch is susceptible to elevated ***,methodologies are needed to(1) protect Japanese larch against O3damage and(2) conduct biomonitoring of O3in Japanese larch forests and,thus,monitor O3risks to Japanese *** the first time,this study evaluates whether the synthetic chemical ethylenediurea(EDU) can protect Japanese larch against O3damage,in two independent *** the first experiment,seedling communities,simulating natural regeneration,were treated with EDU(0,100,200,and 400 mg L-1) and exposed to either ambient or elevated O3in a growing *** the second experiment,individually-grown saplings were treated with EDU(0,200 and 400 mg L-1) and exposed to ambient O3in two growing seasons and to elevated O3in the succeeding two growing *** two experiments revealed that EDU concentrations of 200-400 mg L-1could protect Japanese larch seedling communities and individual saplings against O3-induced inhibition of growth and ***,EDU concentrations ≤200 mg L-1did offer only partial protection when seedling communities were coping with higher level of O3-induced stress,and only 400 mg EDU L-1fully protected communities under higher ***,we conclude that among the concentrations tested the concentration offering maximum protection to Japanese larch plants under high competition and O3-induced stress is that of 400 mg EDU *** results of this study can provide a valuable resource of information for applied forestry in an O3-polluted world.

In the treatment of SMON (clioquinol intoxication), various therapeutic methods have been attempted in the past in Japan, including steroid or ATP-Nicotinic acid or other drug therapy, hyperbaric oxgen therapy, extradural anesthesia with lidocain and corticosteroids, various types of rehabilitation therapy, and acupuncture and moxibustion. We report the experimental demonstration of transform-limited sub-6 fs pulses at an optimal central wavelength by a tunable noncollinear optical parametric amplification（NOPA） source. Meanwhile, a white light continuum in the near-infrared（NIR） range from 900 to 1100 nm is also successfully generated by focusing the unconverted800 nm beam during NOPA generation on a sapphire rod. Both visible-pump/visible-probe and visible-pump/NIR-probe experiments are realized using the same laser system. As examples, ultrafast photo-induced exciton dynamics inside two kinds of materials are investigated by the visible-pump/visible-probe and visible-pump/NIR-probe spectroscopy, respectively.
