Assessment of the validity of the clinical pathway for colon endoscopic submucosal dissection

AIM: To determine the effective hospitalization period as the clinical pathway to prepare patients for endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study which included 189 patients consecutively treated by ESD at the National Cancer Center Hospital from May 2007 to March 2009. Patients were divided into 2 groups; patients in group A were discharged in 5 d and patients in group B included those who stayed longer than 5 d. The following data were collected for both groups: mean hospitalization period, tumor site, median tumor size, post-ESD rectal bleeding requiring urgent endoscopy, perforation during or after ESD, abdominal pain, fever above 38 ℃, and blood test results positive for inflammatory markers before and after ESD. Each parameter was compared after data collection. RESULTS: A total of 83% (156/189) of all patients could be discharged from the hospital on day 3 postESD. Complications were observed in 12.1% (23/189) of patients. Perforation occurred in 3.7% (7/189) of patients. All the perforations occurred during the ESD procedure and they were managed with endoscopic clipping. The incidence of post-operative bleeding was 2.6% (5/189); all the cases involved rectal bleeding. We divided the subjects into 2 groups: tumor diameter ≥ 4 cm and < 4 cm; there was no significant difference between the 2 groups (P = 0.93, χ 2 test with Yates correction). The incidence of abdominal pain was 3.7% (7/189). All the cases occurred on the day of the procedure or the next day. The median white blood cell count was 6800 ± 2280 (cells/μL; ± SD) for group A, and 7700 ± 2775 (cells/μL; ± SD) for group B, showing a statistically significant difference (P = 0.023, t-test). The mean C-reactive protein values the day after ESD were 0.4 ± 1.3 mg/dL and 0.5 ± 1.3 mg/dL for groups A and B, respectively, with no significant difference between the 2 groups (P = 0.54, t -test). Image of tumor metastasis and inflammatory lymph node enlargement by contrast-enhanced ultrasonography

AIM:To compare the difference between tumorinduced lymph node enlargement and inflammation-induced lymph node enlargement by contrast-enhanced ultrasonography and pathological findings. METHODS:A model of tumor-induced lymph node metastasis was prepared by embedding a VX2 tumor into the hind paws of white rabbits.A model of inflammation-induced enlargement was prepared by injecting a suspension of Escherichia coli into separate hind paws of white ***,a solution of SonazoidTM(GE Healthcare,Oslo,Norway)was injected subcutaneously in the proximity of the lesion followed by contrast-enhanced ultrasonography of the enlarged popliteal lymph nodes. RESULTS:In the contrast-enhanced ultrasonography of the tumor-induced metastasis model,the sentinel lymph node was *** area of filling defect was observed in that enlarged lymph *** the histology examination,the area of filling defect corresponded to the metastatic lesion of the ***-enhanced ultrasonography of the model on inflammation-induced lymph node enlargement,and that of the acute inflam-mation model performed 3-7 d later,revealed dense staining that was comparatively *** pathological findings showed acute lymphadenitis mainly due to infiltration of inflammatory ***-enhanced ultrasonography that was performed 28 d post-infection in the acute inflammation model showed speckled ***-induced cell infiltration and fiberization,which are findings of chronic lymphadenitis, were seen in the pathological findings. CONCLUSION:Sentinel lymph node imaging was made possible by subcutaneous injection of ***-enhanced ultrasonography was suggested to be useful in differentiating tumor-induced enlargement and inflammation-induced enlargement of lymph nodes.

Principle for obtaining high joint quality in dissimilar friction welding of Ti-6Al-4V alloy and SUS316L stainless steel

Ti-6Al-4V alloy(Ti64)and SUS316 L stainless steel rods were dissimilarly friction *** focusing on the detailed observation of interface microstructural evolution during the friction welding(FW),the relationship between the processing conditions,weld interface microstructure,and mechanical properties of the obtained joints were systematically investigated to elucidate the principle for obtaining a high joint quality in the FW of Ti64 and SUS316L.A higher friction pressure produced a lower welding temperature in the FW,hence suppressing the thick intermetallic compound layer ***,hard and brittle Ti64/SUS316L mechanically mixed layers generally formed especially at the weld interface periphery due to the high temperature increasing rate,high rotation linear velocity and high outward flow velocity of the *** harmful layers tended to induce the cracks/voids formation at the weld interfaces hence deteriorating the joints’mechanical *** rotation speed reduction and liquid CO2 cooling during the entire processing decreased the temperature increasing rate,rotation linear velocity and outward flow velocity of the Ti64 at the weld interface ***,they suppressed the formation of the harmful mechanically mixed layers,facilitated the homogeneous and sound interface microstructure generation,and finally produced a high-quality dissimilar joint in the FW of Ti64 and SUS316L.

Baryon-Baryon interactions from lattice QCD

Confidence interval of intrinsic optimum temperature estimated using thermodynamic SSI model

The intrinsic optimum temperature for the development of ectotherms is one of the most important factors not only for their physiological processes but also for ecolog- ical and evolutional processes. The Sharpe-Schoolfield-Ikemoto （SSI） model succeeded in defining the temperature that can thermodynamically meet the condition that at a par- ticular temperature the probability of an active enzyme reaching its maximum activity is realized. Previously, an algorithm was developed by Ikemoto （Tropical malaria does not mean hot environments. Journal of Medical Entomology, 45, 963-969） to estimate model parameters, but that program was computationally very time consuming. Now, investi- gators can use the SSI model more easily because a full automatic computer program was designed by Shi et al. （A modified program for estimating the parameters of the SSI model. Environmental Entomology, 40, 462-469）. However, the statistical significance of the point estimate of the intrinsic optimum temperature for each ectotherm has not yet been determined. Here, we provided a new method for calculating the confidence interval of the estimated intrinsic optimum temperature by modifying the approximate bootstrap confidence intervals method. For this purpose, it was necessary to develop a new program for a faster estimation of the parameters in the SSI model, which we have also done.

s cascade reinforcement likely when sympatric tnd allopatric populations exchange migrants？

When partially reproductively isolated species come back into secondary contact, these taxa may diverge in mating preferences and sexual cues to avoid maladaptive hybridization, a process known as reinforcement. This phenomenon often leads to reproductive character displacement （RCD） between sympatric and allopatric populations of reinforcing species that differ in their exposure to hybridization. Recent discussions have reinvigorated the idea that RCD may give rise to additional speciation between conspecific sympatric and allopatric populations, dubbing the concept ＂cascade reinforcement.＂ Despite some empirical studies supporting cascade reinforcement, we still know very little about the conditions for its evolution. In the present article, we address this question by developing an individual-based population genetic model that explicitly simulates cascade reinforcement when one of the hybridizing species is split into sympatric and allopatric populations. Our results show that when sympatric and allopatric populations reside in the same environment and only differ in their exposure to maladaptive hybridization, migration between them generally inhibits the evolution of cascade by spreading the reinforcement alleles from sympatry into allopatry and erasing RCD. Under these conditions, cascade reinforcement only evolved when migration rate between sympatric and allopatric populations was very low. This indicates that stabilizing sexual selection in allopatry is generally ineffective in preventing the spread of reinforcement alleles. Only when sympatric and allopatric populations experienced divergent ecological selection did cascade reinforcement evolve in the presence of substantial migration. These predictions clarify the conditions for cascade reinforcement and facilitate our understanding of existing cases in nature.

Ghost Imaging with Deep Learning for Position Mapping of Weakly Scattered Light Source

We propose ghost imaging(GI)with deep learning to improve detection ***,which uses an illumination light with random patterns and a single-pixel detector,is correlation-based and thus suitable for detecting weak ***,its detection time is too long for practical *** overcome this problem,we applied a convolutional neural network that was constructed based on a classification of the causes of ghost image degradation.A feasibility experiment showed that when using a digital mirror device projector and a photodiode,the proposed method improved the quality of ghost images.

PREPARATION OF IODINE-INCLUDED CARBON USING RF PLASMA CVD

For the aim of synthesis of the carbon-iodine compound, the preparation of iodin e-included carbon using RF plasma CVD was studied. Iodine-included carbon was sy nthesized on Si substrate using ICP type RF plasma CVD apparatus. C2H5OH and I2 dissolved C2H5OH was used as reactant gases. As a result, surface morphologies o f Iodine included carbon films showed flat surfaces for each samples. On the str ucture of films estimated by Raman spectroscopy, amorphous carbon was recognized . And I2 peaks were observed in XPS spectra. As a result of friction test, frict ion coefficient of the sample growth with C2H5OH showed about 0.45. On the other hand, that of the sample with I2-C2H5OH showed about 0.3 and decrease of fricti on coefficient was recognized. Iodine inclusion for carbon materials can be achi eved by RF plasma CVD using an I2-C2H5OH reactant. The coefficient of iodine-inc luded carbon showed lower than of without iodine

Attenuation and Distortion of Compression Waves Propagating in Very Long Tube

A lot of phenomena related to propagating various waves are seen when the high-speed train goes through the tunnel,the gas pipeline is broken due to an accident or the air brake of the wagon *** instance,a compression wave generated ahead of a high-speed train entering a tunnel propagates to the tunnel exit and spouts as a micro pressure wave,which causes an exploding *** order to estimate the magnitude correctly,the mechanism of the attenuation and distortion of a compression wave propagating along a very long tunnel must be understood and the experimental information on these phenomena is *** experimental investigation is carried out to clarify the attenuation and distortion of the propagating compression wave in a very long *** results show that the strength of a compression wave decreases with *** attenuation and distortion of compression waves are affected by the initial waveform of the compression wave and by the unsteady boundary layer induced by the propagating *** shape of a compression wave becomes different with the propagating distance;that is,a shock wave appears just head of a wavefront and an overshoot on pressure distribution is observed behind a shock wave due to the transition of the unsteady boundary layer.
