Identification of Quantitative Trait Loci Controlling Floral Morphology of Rice Using a Backcross Population between Common Cultivated Rice, <i>Oryza sativa</i>and Asian Wild Rice, <i>O. rufipogon</i>

Differences in floral morphologies affect pollination behaviour in many flowering plants. In the genus Oryza, several differences in the size of floral organs are known. In this study, we focused on the differences in the size of floral organs between common cultivated rice, Oryza sativa L. and its wild ancestor, O. rufipogon. We compared floral morphologies between cultivated rice O. sativa cv. Nipponbare and O. rufipogon W630. We first evaluated temporal changes in filament and anther lengths. W630 had longer filaments with rapid elongation within 15 min after spikelet opening. W630 also had longer anthers than Nipponbare, and size of anther was consistent throughout all time examined. We also analysed other six floral traits, and found that W630 had higher stigma and style length, as well as lemma and palea length, but lower lemma and palea width. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis was performed to identify the loci controlling these floral traits, using backcross recombinant inbred lines derived from a cross between Nipponbare and W630. A total of 11 significant QTLs were identified. Of these, two pairs of QTLs for lemma and palea length and one pair for lemma and palea width overlapped, suggesting that common genetic factors may be the reason for the differences in these traits. In addition, we performed QTL analysis for grain size, and found that QTLs for grain size coincided with those for lemma and palea size, indicating that grain size is partly controlled by glume capacity. The QTLs identified in this study will be informative for understanding genetic changes associated with rice domestication.

Concordance of ulcerative colitis in monozygotic twin sisters

The etiology of inflammatory bowel disease is multifacto rial and appears to combine both genetic and environmental factors. We experienced here a rare occurrence of woman monozygotic twins with ulcerative colitis (UC). A 45-year-old woman (the elder monozygotic twin) was admitted to our hospital because of bloody diarrhea occurring over 10 times per day, abdominal pain and fever. She was diagnosed as UC at the age of 22, and repeated the relapse and remission. She was diagnosed as relapse of UC and total colitis type. Her younger monozygotic twin sister also suffered from UC at the age of 22. Human leukocyte antigen was examined serologically with DNA type in both patients. DRB1*1502, which was previously shown to be dominant in Japanese patients with UC, was not observed in this case. Although the concordance in monozygotic twin in UC is reported to be 6.3-18.8%, the concordant case like this is relatively rare. We report this rare case of UC and the previously reported cases are also discussed.

Evaluating “Cosmetic Therapy” by Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

This study examined the effect of cosmetic therapy on frontal lobe activation as revealed by topographic near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). We evaluated emotional responses to a photograph of a face with/without makeup by 22 healthy female volunteers (mean age, 52 ± 10.5 years). The results of the first-round analysis showed a significant increase of oxy-Hb in the frontal lobe area when the subject looked at a photograph of herself made up as compared to not made up. In a later round of analysis, we divided the subjects into 2 groups having contrasting scores on the Profile of Mood States-Short Form Japanese version. One group was classed as “high vigor” (a common standard pattern) and the other as “low vigor” (depression-tendency pattern). The made-up/not made-up difference did not have any effect on the oxy-Hb level in the frontal lobe in the high vigor group. In contrast, makeup produced a significant increase in the oxy-Hb level over a wide frontal area in the low vigor group, which indicated widespread frontal lobe activation. This result indicates a beneficial effect of cosmetic therapy on the brain function of patients with depression and/ or dementia.

Background Cyclooxygenase-2 （COX-2） is overexpressed during airway inflammation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease （COPD） *** nucleotide polymorphisms （SNPs） in the COX-2 promoter might contribute to differential COX-2 expression and subsequent interindividual variability in susceptibility to *** investigated the association between COX-2 （-765G〉C,-1195G〉A） polymorphisms and COPD susceptibility in Japanese and Chinese *** COX-2 genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction,restriction fragment length polymorphism in 230 COPD patients （103 Japanese and 127 Chinese） and 273 healthy controls （129 Japanese and 144 Chinese）.Results The frequency of-1195AA homozygote was significantly higher than the controls in Chinese COPD （adjusted OR=2.43,95% CI 1.14-4.19）,Japanese COPD （adjusted OR=-2.25,95% Cl 1.06-4.76） and combined COPD groups （adjusted OR=2.26,95% CI 1.34-3.99）.There was no difference in COX-2-765G〉C polymorphism between COPD and control groups in either Japanese or Chinese,while more Chinese individuals carried the-765C allele than Japanese in both groups （15.3% vs.2.9% in COPD,18.8% vs.5.5% in control）.Chinese individuals with the haplotype-765G：-1195A were at higher risk for COPD （adjusted OR=1.93,95% CI 1.05-3.55）.Conclusions The COX-2-1195AA genotype is associated with increased risk for COPD in both Japanese and Chinese *** COX-2-765G〉C polymorphism was not associated with COPD in either ethnic group,the-765C allele frequency was higher in Chinese than Japanese and haplotype-765G-1195A may confer susceptibility to COPD in Chinese.

We investigate the generation of single-transverse-mode Laguerre-Gaussian(LG)emission from a diode-end-pumped Nd:YVO_(4),1064 nm laser using mode selection via intracavity spherical aberration(SA).We present both theoretical and experimental investigations,examining the limits of the order(both radial and angular indices)of the LG modes which can be produced,along with the resultant output *** found that in order to generate single-mode emission of low-order LG modes which have relatively small beam diameters,lenses with shorter focal-length were required(to better differentiate neighboring LG modes via SA).The converse was true of LG modes with *** appropriate choice of the focal length of the intracavity lens,we were able to generate single-mode,LG_(0,±m) laser output with angular indices m selectable from 1 to 95,as well as those with non-zero radial indices p of up to 4.

Multicenter cooperative observational study of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis with non-small cell lung cancer

AIM: To research the natural course of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis(IPF) with advanced non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC) and the association between acuteMETHODS: From May 2007 through April 2011, 17 CT naive patients with IPF and advanced NSCLC were enrolled. Patients were classified into best supportive care(BSC) group or CT group based on the patient's preference. Patients in the CT group received carboplatin(CBDCA)(AUC 5-6) plus paclitaxel(PTX)(175-200 mg/m2) on day 1 of each 21-d cycle as first-line ***: All patients but one chose the CT group. In the CT group, the objective response rate was 38%. The most frequent toxicity ≥ grade 3 was neutropenia(88%). Two patients(12.5%) developed AE-IPF. The median progression-free survival, the median survival time and the 1-year survival rate were 4.1 mo, 8.7 mo and 35%, respectively. Second-line CT-related AE and CT-unrelated AE occurred in 2 and 3 patients(1: BSC group; 2: CT group), respectively. Seven(41%) of all patients developed AE-IPF throughout the clinical course, and 6 of 7 patients with AE-IPF died within one ***: The incidence of AE-IPF was higher among IPF patients with advanced NSCLC than among those without NSCLC. CBDCA plus PTX regimen was tolerable and effective. However, AE-IPF has a fatal toxicity with or without CT in IPF patients with advanced NSCLC.

为提高乳品工业废水生物处理的去污脱氮能力,以新型螺旋状纤维填料作为载体,采用多级氧化槽内不同种类微生物形成的食物链系统（food chain reactor）,详细考察了不同水力停留时间COD、TN、NH4^＋-N、TP等的去除率及其去除机理,并对污泥减量化效果进行了初步探讨.结果表明,当进水COD为842-1 843 mg/L、TN为36.3-92.2 mg/L、NH4^＋-N为30.1-52.1 mg/L,HRT=6 h时,系统COD的平均去除率达到93.3%;TN和NH4^＋-N的去除效果显著,其平均去除率分别达到73.3%和80.7%,出水COD、TN、NH4^＋-N平均值分别为79.4 mg/L、9.6 mg/L、6.1 mg/L,均低于《污水综合排放标准》（GB 8978-2002）的一级标准.该系统不仅具有较高的去污脱氮效果,而且产生的剩余污泥量极少,其污泥产率的平均值为7.7%.该系统运行费用低,操作管理方便,长期运行稳定,可应用于城市污水、中高浓度有机废水（如餐厅污水、食品工业废水）等的处理.

采用日本菊池环保株式会社生产的新型TCRI-17微气泡气浮装置混凝气浮处理北京某富营养化景观水体的含藻废水,其结果表明,当混凝剂用量分别为PAC 40 mg/L和PAM2 mg/L,混凝2 min,气浮2 min时,SS和COD去除率分别达到98.4%和85.7%。与混凝沉降相比,可减少PAC用量1/3,且节省处理时间。由于微小气泡停留时间长,气浮效率高,且有增加水中溶解氧的作用,可促进水体的净化,具有较强的技术优势。
