Overexpression of ETS-1 is associated with malignan＇ biological features of prostate cancer

E26 transformation-specific-1 （ETS-1）, an ETS family transcription factor, has been reported to play an important role in a variety of physiological and pathological processes, but clinical implications of ETS-1 expression in prostate cancer （PCa）, particularly high-risk cases, including response to androgen-deprivation therapy （ADT） have yet to be elucidated. We examined the expression of ETS- 1 using immunohistochemical staining of paraffin-embedded prostate carcinoma tissue obtained by needle biopsy from 69 mostly advanced PCa patients. ETS-1 expression was compared with the clinicopathological characteristics of the 69 patients, including 25 who underwent ADT as a primary treatment. As a result, PCa patients with higher expression of ETS-1 were significantly more likely to be of high stage and high Gleason score （P〈O.05）. There was no significant association between ETS-1 expression and the initial prostate-specific antigen （PSA） level. In the 25 patients treated by ADT, the staining score for ETS-1 was significantly associated with rapid development of castration-resistant disease within 24 months （P〈O.05）, whereas the Gleason score and PSA level were not. In conclusion, increased ETS-1 expression was associated with a higher stage, higher Gleason score and shorter time to castration-resistant progression. These data suggest that immunostaining for ETS-1 could be a molecular marker for predicting a poor clinical outcome for PCa patients, oarticularlv those with hi^h-risk disease.

Evaluation of safety for hepatectomy in a novel mouse model with nonalcoholic-steatohepatitis

AIM To investigate whether the liver resection volume in a newly developed nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) model influences surgical *** For establishment of a NASH model, mice were fed a high-fat diet for 4 wk, administered CCl_4 for the last 2 wk, and administered T0901317 for the last 5 d. We divided these mice into two groups: A 30% partial hepatectomy(PH) of NASH liver group and a 70% PH of NASH liver group. In addition, a 70% PH of normal liver group served as the control. Each group was evaluated for survival rate, regeneration, apoptosis, necrosis and DNA expression after *** In the 70% PH of NASH group, the survival rate was significantly decreased compared with that in the control and 30% PH of NASH groups(P < 0.01). 10 of 32 mice in the NASH 70% PH group died within 48 h after PH. Serum aspartate aminotransferase(AST) levels and total bilirubin(T-Bil) in the NASH 70% PH group were significantly higher than the levels in the other two groups(AST: P < 0.05, T-Bil: P < 0.01). In both PH of NASH groups, signaling proteins involved in regeneration were expressed at lower levels than those in the control group(P < 0.01). The 70% PH of NASH group also exhibited a lower number of Ki-67-positive cells and higher rates of apoptosis and necrosis than the NASH 30% PH group(P < 0.01). In addition, DNA microarray assays showed differences in gene expression associated with cell cycle arrest and *** The function of the residual liver is impaired in fatty liver compared to normal liver. Background: Medical staff provide care to spouses of terminal cancer patients through trial and error by meeting their various support needs and spousal factors regarding their anticipatory grief. Studies on the association between spousal characteristics and anticipatory grief have been inconclusive;additionally, there has been insufficient research on support needs for anticipatory grief of spouses. This study aimed to explore the spousal characteristics and social support needs predicting anticipatory grief in spouses of patients with cancer at the end of life. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. Eligible spouses (n = 102) completed a self-report questionnaire in two hospitals with palliative care units in Japan. The questionnaire included demographic information, a tool assessing social support needs of spouses, and the Anticipatory Grief Scale for Family Caregivers. Results: Simple regression analyses indicated that patient age, chemotherapy, no treatment, ECOG PS3, children aged under 20 years, total score of “social support needs regarding the disease and treatment of the patients” and subscale scores (“medical condition and cure,” “daily life and social support,” and “intimacy and employment”), and total score of “social support needs of the spouses” and subscale scores (“family psychological issues and social support” and “intimacy, employment, and society”) were significant variables (all p p Conclusions: Patients having no experience of “chemotherapy” and higher “social support needs of the spouses” in Model 1, and greater spousal needs of “family psychological issues and social support” in Model 2 were significant predictors of severe anticipatory grief. Medical staff should pay attention to these risk factors that predict anticipatory grief among spouses.

Development of a Heavy Ion Bearn Probe for Measuring Electrostatic Potential Profile and Its Fluctuation in LHD

A heavy ion beam probe （HIBP） using a 3-MV tandem accelerator has been installed on large helical device （LHD）. Electrostatic potential in core plasma can be measured under the toroidal magnetic field strength of up to 3 T. By using the HIBP, the transition of potential profiles from electron-root to ion^root is observed in core plasmas during ramp-up of the electron density. Potential fluctuations are also measured electron cyclotron current drive （ECCD）. Two kind of characteristic fluctuations are observed. One is a reversed-shear-induced Alfv^n eigenmode （RSAE）, whose frequency varies during the evolution of the rotational transform profile, and the other is with a constant geodeisc acoustic mode （GAM） frequency.

Prognostic factors in heart failure patients with cardiac cachexia

Here we report imaging studies of a patient with pulmonary benign metastasizing leiomyoma (BML). A 44-year-old woman who underwent a hysterectomy for uterine cellular leiomyoma presented with abnormal shadows on a chest X-ray. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed multiple well-defined nodules in both lungs. Chest magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) indicated these nodules as T1-low/T2-high intensity lesions. Contrast-enhanced MRI indicated these nodules as well-enhanced lesions, while 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-CT revealed no abnormal accumulation in these nodules. Bilateral lung wedge resections were performed for the largest 2 lesions to confirm the diagnosis, and both nodules were histologically diagnosed as BML.

Safety and efficacy of carbon dioxide insufflation during gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection

AIM: To compare the safety and efficacy of carbon dioxide(CO2) and air insufflation during gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD).METHODS: This study involved 116 patients who underwent gastric ESD between January and December *** eliminating 29 patients who fit the exclusion criteria,87 patients,without known pulmonary dysfunction,were randomized into the CO2 insufflation(n = 36) or air insufflation(n = 51) *** ESD was performed with a CO2 regulation unit(constant rate of 1.4 L/min) used for patients undergoing CO2 *** received diazepam for conscious sedation and pentazocine for *** CO2 tension(Ptc CO2) was recorded 15 min before,during,and after ESD with *** CO2,the correlation between Ptc CO2 and procedure time,and ESD-related complications were compared between the two *** blood gases were analyzed after ESD in the first 30 patients(12 with CO2 and 18 with air insufflation) to assess the correlation between arterial blood CO2 partial pressure(Pa CO2) and Ptc ***: There were no differences in respiratoryfunctions,median sedative doses,or median procedure times between the ***,there was no significant difference in post-ESD blood gas parameters,including Pa CO2,between the CO2 and air groups(44.6 mm Hg vs 45 mm Hg).Both groups demonstrated median p H values of 7.36,and none of the patients exhibited *** significant differences were observed between the CO2 and air groups with respect to baseline Ptc CO2(39 mm Hg vs 40 mm Hg),peak Ptc CO2 during ESD(52 mm Hg vs 51 mm Hg),or median Ptc CO2 after ESD(50 mm Hg vs 50 mm Hg).There was a strong correlation between Pa CO2 and Ptc CO2(r = 0.66; P < 0.001).The incidence of Mallory-Weiss tears was significantly lower with CO2 insufflation than with air insufflation(0% vs 15.6%,P = 0.013).CO2 insufflation did not cause any adverse events,such as CO2 narcosis or gas ***: CO2 insufflation durin
