Sensorineural hearing dysfunction after discharge from critical care in adults:A retrospective observational study

Background Patients undergoing intensive care are exposed to risk factors for hearing *** study assessed the worse changes in pure tone average(PTA)thresholds after intensive care and identified the factors associated with worse hearing *** We conducted a single-centre retrospective study,and included adult patients admitted to the intensive care unit(ICU)of Kurashiki Central Hospital between January 2014 and September 2019,who had regular pure tone audiometry performed before and after ICU *** between changes in PTA threshold and patient characteristics,were *** included ears were classified as those with worse hearing(>10 dB increase in the PTA threshold)and those without worse hearing,and the baseline characteristics were *** During the study period,125 ears of 71 patients(male:female ratio,35:36;mean age,72.5±12.3 years)met the eligibility ***,sex,and the use of furosemide were not correlated with changes in PTA *** analysis showed that ears with worse hearing were associated with a lower serum platelet count than ears without worse hearing(153±85×10^(9)/L vs.206±85×10^(9)/L,respectively;P=0.010),and the rate of planned ICU admission(elective surgery)was higher in the worse hearing group(57.1% vs.28.8%,respectively;p=0.011).Conclusions Age,sex,and the use of furosemide did not have adversely affect hearing *** serum platelet count and planned admission appear to be risk factors for worse hearing.

Multi-scale modeling of hemodynamics in the cardiovascular system

The human cardiovascular system is a closed- loop and complex vascular network with multi-scaled het- erogeneous hemodynamic phenomena. Here, we give a selective review of recent progress in macro-hemodynamic modeling, with a focus on geometrical multi-scale model- ing of the vascular network, micro-hemodynamic modeling of microcirculation, as well as blood cellular, subcellular, endothelial biomechanics, and their interaction with arter- ial vessel mechanics. We describe in detail the methodology of hemodynamic modeling and its potential applications in cardiovascular research and clinical practice. In addition, we present major topics for future study： recent progress of patient-specific hemodynamic modeling in clinical applica- tions, micro-hemodynamic modeling in capillaries and blood cells, and the importance and potential of the multi-scale hemodynarnic modeling.

A Note on Special Functions Related to Lotka / Negative Volterra Equations

We study special functions related to Lotka-Volterra equations and negative Volterra equation intro-duced from zero curvature representations . At first we show the relationships between Lotka-Volterra equations introduced from zero curvature representations and symmetric orthogonal polynomials. Sec-ondarily, we describe the relationships between negative Volterra equations with a special solutions and cylinder functions.

Based on the design of the fluorescent site of a fluorescent probe,we have created a unique system that changes its twisting response to *** probes were synthesized,in which phenylboronic acid and two kinds of aromatic fluorescent site(pyrene or anthracene)were conjugated by an amide *** the fluorescence measurement of pyrene-type probe 1,dimer fluorescence was observed at high *** induced circular dichroism(ICD)experiments,a response was observed only in the presence of glucose and γ-cyclodextrin,and no response was seen with *** the other hand,in the fluorescence measurement of anthracene-type probe 2,dimer fluorescence was observed in the presence of both glucose and galactose,and the fluorescence was different from the case of *** the ICD spectra of these inclusion complexes were measured,an inversion of the Cotton effect,which indicates a change in the twisted structure,was observed in galactose and *** differences in response to monosaccharides may originate in the interaction between the fluorescent site and the cyclodextrin cavity.

Theta Activity in the Regio Inferior of the Temporal Hippocampus by Odor Stimulation in Anesthetized Pigs

We examined theta activity in the temporal hippocampus of ure-thane-chloralose-anesthetized pigs by stimulation with two chemical odors, beta-phenyl ethyl alcohol (PEA;rose-like odor) and n-amyl acetate (banana-like odor). Neural activity was recorded in the neural cell layer nearby fimbria of the temporal hippocampus in three of six animals. Odor stimulation with PEA at a low concentration (10-4 w/w;100 ppm) significantly increased power of the low-frequency theta band (type-2;4 - 6 Hz) for the middle 10 s (w (3, 6, 2.5%) >2.56). The PEA odor at a higher concentration (10-3 w/w;1000 ppm), however, showed a tendency for gradual increase in?the low-frequency theta but the response was insignificant compared with the control. On the other hand, odor stimulation with n-amyl acetate (10-4 w/w;100 ppm) caused no apparent increase or a tendency for decrease in power of the low-frequency theta. Thus, the type-2 theta response in the temporal hippocampus to the PEA odor contrasted strikingly with that to the n-amylacetate in the ure-thane-chloralose-anesthetized pigs. The response of the type-2 theta rhythm in the temporal hippocampus may underlie the difference in emotional sensation and cognition of PEA from n-amyl acetate in the pig.

Sitting position improves consciousness level in patients with cerebral disorders

Cerebral disorders are often associated with disturbance of consciousness. Since the latter could alter the prognosis of physical function, early improvement of consciousness level is important. The present study tested the hypothesis that sitting position improves disturbances of consciousness in patients with cerebral disorders. The subjects were 17 patients with cerebral disorders and disturbances of consciousness. The consciousness level was evaluated in supine position and following a change to sitting position. The consciousness level was evaluated by the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS). The total, eye opening, and motor GCS scores were significantly higher in the sitting position compared with the supine position. In conclusions, changing from supine to sitting position improves consciousness level in patients with cerebral disorders.

We propose a method for color electroholography using a simple red-green-blue （RGB） gradation representa- tion method without controlling the respective brightness of tile reference RGB-colored lights. The proposed method uses RGB multiple bit planes comprising RGB binary-weighted computer-generated holograms with various light transmittanees. The object points of a given three-dimensional （3D） object are assigned to RGB nmltiple bit planes according to their RGB gradation levels. The RGB multiple bit planes are sequentially displayed in a tim-division-multiplexe- manner. Consequently, the proposed method yields a color gradation representation of a reconstructed 3D object.

We propose a simple gradation representation method using a binary-weighted computer-generated hologram（CGH） to be displayed on a high-speed spatial light modulator that can be controlled by the pulse-width modulation technique. The proposed method uses multiple bit planes comprising binary-weighted CGHs with various pulse widths. The object points of a three-dimensional（3D） object are assigned to multiple bit planes according to their gray levels. AIM:To establish an animal model with human hepatocyte-repopulated liver for the study of liver cancer ***:Cell transplantation into mouse livers was conducted using alpha-fetoprotein(AFP)-producing hu-man gastric cancer cells(h-GCCs) and h-hepatocytes as donor cells in a transgenic mouse line expressing urokinase-type plasminogen activator(uPA) driven by the albumin enhancer/promoter crossed with a severe combined immunodeficient(SCID) mouse line(uPA/SCID mice).Host mice were divided into two groups(A and B).Group A mice were transplanted with h-GCCs alone,and group B mice were transplanted with h-GCCs and h-hepatocytes *** replacement index(RI),which is the ratio of transplanted h-GCCs and h-hepatocytes that occupy the examined area of a histological section,was estimated by measuring h-AFP and h-albumin concentrations in sera,respectively,as well as by immunohistochemical analyses of h-AFP and human cytokeratin 18 in histological ***:The h-GCCs successfully engrafted,repopulated,and colonized the livers of mice in group A(RI = 22.0% ± 2.6%).These mice had moderately differentiated adenocarcinomatous lesions with disrupted glandular structures,which is a characteristics feature of gastric *** serum h-AFP level reached 211.0 ± 142.2 g/mL(range,7.1-324.2 g/mL).In group B mice,the h-GCCs and h-hepatocytes independently engrafted,repopulated the host liver,and developed colonies(RI = 12.0% ± 6.8% and 66.0% ± 12.3%,respectively).h-GCC colonies also showed typical adenocarcinomatous glandular structures around the *** mice survived for the full 56 day-study and did not exhibit any metastasis of h-GCCs in the extrahepatic regions during the observational *** mice with an h-hepatocyte-repopulated liver possessed metastasized h-GCCs and therefore could be a useful humanized liver animal model for studying liver cancer metastasis in ***:A novel animal model of human liver cancer metastas
