High-solids anaerobic mono-digestion of riverbank grass under thermophilic conditions

The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential of high-solids anaerobic mono-digestion of riverbank grass under thermophilic conditions, focusing on the effects of the strength and the amount of inoculum. Ensiled grass was inoculated with three different inocula; inoculum from liquid anaerobic digester（LI）, inoculum from dry anaerobic digester（DI）, and mixture of LI and DI（MI）, at feedstock-to-inoculum ratio（FIR） of 1, 2 and 4. The ensiling process of riverbank grass reduced moisture content（p 〉 0.05）, while the hemicellulose content was significantly increased from 30.88% to 35.15%（p 〈 0.05）, on dry matter basis. The highest methane production was at an FIR of 2 with MI（167 L/kg VSadded）,which was significantly higher（p 〈 0.05） than with DI, but not significant compared to LI（p 〉 0.05）. At an FIR of 4, digesters inoculated with LI and DI failed to produce methane,whereas 135 LCH4/kg VSaddedwas obtained with MI. The kinetic studies showed that at an FIR of 1 with LI and MI, the inoculum had less of effects on the hydrolysis rate constant（0.269 day-1and 0.245 day-1） and methane production（135 versus 149 L/kg VSadded）; rather,it affected the lag phase. In a thermophilic HS-AD of riverbank grass, the mixture of inoculum with low and high total solids content（TS） helps increase the TS of inoculum and digestion process. An FIR of 2 was deducted to be the limit for a better startup time and higher volumetric productivity of methane.

Effects of Methane Fermentation on Seed Survival of Broad-Leaved Dock （Rumexobtusifolius L.） with Dairy Manure

To clarify the effect of exposure to methane fermentation on the survival of seeds of Rumexobtusifolius L. contained in dairy slurry, the percentage of seed germination was observed after the mesophilic （35 ℃） and thermophilic （55 ℃） methane fermentation. The number of survival seed was 0% at 55 ℃, 81.6% at 35 ℃ from methane fermentation, and 0% at 55℃, 75.5% at 35 ℃ after heat treatment. The survival rate of the seeds in methane fermentation was similar to heat treatment at 35 ℃. However, in the investigation of seed status, the number of primary and secondary dormant seeds was higher than after heat treatment. This result suggests that since Rumexobtusifolius L. seeds survive in dormant state in mesophilic methane fermentation, the usage of manure as fertilizer need to be considered.

Novel aspects of extracellular adenosine dynamics revealed by adenosine sensor cells

Adenosine modulates diverse physiological and pathological processes in the brain, including neuronal activities, blood flow, and inflammation. However, the mechanisms underlying the dynamics of extracellular adenosine are not fully understood. We have recently developed a novel biosensor, called an adenosine sensor cell, and we have characterized the neuronal and astrocytic pathways for elevating extracellular adenosine. In this review, the physiological implications and therapeutic potential of the pathways revealed by the adenosine sensor cells are discussed. We propose that the multiple pathways regulating extracellular adenosine allow for the diverse functions of this neuromodulator, and their malfunctions cause various neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Abemaciclib-induced lung damage leading to discontinuation in brain metastases from breast cancer: A case report

Probiotics for gastrointestinal disorders: Proposed recommendations for children of the Asia-Pacific region

Recommendations for probiotics are available in several regions. This paper proposes recommendations for probiotics in pediatric gastrointestinal diseases in the Asia-Pacific region. Epidemiology and clinical patterns of intestinal diseases in Asia-Pacific countries were discussed. Evidence-based recommendations and randomized controlled trials in the region were revised. Cultural aspects,health management issues and economic factors were also considered. Final recommendations were approved by applying the Likert scale and rated using the GRADE system. Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745(Sb) and Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG(LGG) were strongly recommended as adjunct treatment to oral rehydration therapy for gastroenteritis. Lactobacillus reuteri could also be considered. Probiotics may be considered for prevention of(with the indicated strains): antibiotic-associated diarrhea(LGG or Sb); Clostridium difficile-induced diarrhea(Sb); nosocomial diarrhea(LGG); infantile colic(L reuteri) and as adjunct treatment of Helicobacter pylori(Sb and others). Specific probiotics with a history of safe use in preterm and term infants may be considered in infants for prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis. There is insufficient evidence for recommendations in other conditions. Despite a diversity of epidemiological,socioeconomical and health system conditions,similar recommendations apply well to Asia pacific countries. These need to be validated with local randomized-controlled trials.

Trends in Radiology-Related Medical Lawsuits Identified by a Legal Database Search

Background: The number of medical lawsuits has been increasing in Japan. This research aimed to clarify trends in radiology-related cases based on a database search of lawsuits and to consider how to avoid the problems that lead to these kinds of lawsuits. Decrease of radiology-related medical lawsuits makes radiologists work more comfortable. Materials and Methods: The Japanese court case search system “***”, a comprehensive database that includes 29,000 laws and 210,000 precedents, was used to search for relevant lawsuits. The primary (α) keyword was related to radiology. A search was conducted as “α” × “medical” × “compensation for damages” for the period from 1 January 1965 through 30 September 2013. Basic information on 3383 extracted lawsuits was examined. Of these, 35 cases directly related to radiologists were selected, and the judgments or outcomes were investigated. All cases were classified by modality (type of treatment), whether damages were awarded in each modality, and whether the litigation issues were related to procedure, informed consent (IC), diagnosis, or interpretation. Court judgments were analyzed to determine whether a causal relationship was established and how that affected the outcome. Results: The number of lawsuits gradually increased in the 1980s and 1990s and then began to decrease slightly in the 2000s. Interventional radiology (IVR) had the greatest number of cases and greatest number where compensation was awarded. No characteristic trends were identified with regard to litigation issues. There was a tendency to reject cases where no causal relationship was recognized and the treatment was considered appropriate. Conclusion: Mistakes in IVR procedures, lesions overlooked during image interpretation, and misdiagnoses were the main causes of litigation. Root Reconstruction with Total Replacement of Ascending Aorta Using Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest and Selective Cerebral Perfusion for Moderately Dilated Distal Ascending Aorta

Objective: We have occasionally encountered a moderately dilated distal ascending aorta while reconstructing an aortic root. We describe reconstruction of an extended root and ascending aorta using our current strategy. Patients and Methods: Between March 2011 and December 2012, 15 (11 men;mean age, 70.1 ± 7.3 years) patients underwent root reconstruction with hemi-arch replacement under hypothermic circulatory arrest with antegrade selective cerebral perfusion. The maximum diameter of the aortic root was 52.5 ± 4.4 mm. The distal ascending aorta just below innominate artery was moderately dilated to 41.7 ± 1.4 mm in diameter. Results: Operative outcomes excluding the diameter of the distal ascending aorta did not significantly differ from those of patients who had undergone root reconstruction under distal ascending aortic clamping during the same period. Postoperative computed tomography confirmed complete resection of the dilated ascending aorta in the patients, and did not develop neurological dysfunction or stroke. Conclusion: Postoperative computed tomography confirmed complete resection of dilated ascending aortae. We considered that complete resection under hypothermic circulatory arrest and selective cerebral perfusion might help to avoid repeated surgery to treat dilation of the distal ascending aorta over the long-term.

More Peripheral Visualization of Hepatic Arteries by Using Respiratory-Triggered 3D True Steady-State Free-Precession Projection Magnetic Resonance Angiographic Sequences with Time-Spatial Labeling Inversion Pulse

Purpose: To evaluate respiratory-triggered three-dimensional (3D) true steady-state free-precession (SSFP) projection magnetic resonance angiographic sequences with time-spatial labeling inversion pulse (Time-SLIP) for visualizing the hepatic arteries and to optimize the image acquisition protocol. Materials and Methods: A 1.5-T clinical magnetic resonance imager was used to perform abdominal magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) in 25 consecutive patients before transcatheter arterial chemoembolization or surgery. We compared two selective space-labeling inversion pulse (tag pulse) patterns (Patterns I and II, oblique and parallel tag pulses, respectively). Two experienced radiologists evaluated the number of hepatic arterial branches visible on the acquired MRA images, and the results were referenced with those on images from intra-arterial digital subtraction angiography. Results: Images were acquired from all patients. The two radiologists clearly visualized branches of the left and right hepatic arteries. More peripheral hepatic arterial branches were identified in MRA images captured by using tag pulse Pattern I than in those acquired by using Pattern II (P P > 0.05). Conclusion: Non-contrast-enhanced Time-SLIP hepatic MRA with true SSFP allowed selective visualization of peripheral hepatic vessels.

Implantable vascular devices are widely used in clinical treatments for various vascular diseases. However, current approved clinical implantable vascular devices generally have high failure rates primarily due to their surface lacking inherent functional endothelium. Here, inspired by the pathological mechanisms of vascular device failure and physiological functions of native endothelium, we developed a new generation of bioactive parylene (poly(p-xylylene))-based conformal coating to address these challenges of the vascular devices. This coating used a polyethylene glycol (PEG) linker to introduce an endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) specific binding ligand LXW7 (cGRGDdvc) onto the vascular devices for preventing platelet adhesion and selectively capturing endogenous EPCs. Also, we confirmed the long-term stability and function of this coating in human serum. Using two vascular disease-related large animal models, a porcine carotid artery interposition model and a porcine carotid artery-jugular vein arteriovenous graft model, we demonstrated that this coating enabled rapid generation of self-renewable “living” endothelium on the blood contacting surface of the expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) grafts after implantation. We expect this easy-to-apply conformal coating will present a promising avenue to engineer surface properties of “off-the-shelf” implantable vascular devices for long-lasting performance in the clinical settings.
