Effects of silicon addition on optical properties of mould flux with iron oxide and estimation of apparent thermal conductivity of flux

Mould flux with high absorptivity had been obtained in the reduction process of mould flux by silicon.For further utilisation of the mould flux with high absorptivity,the effect of silicon addition on the optical property has been investigated.The synthesised mould flux powder with iron oxide was melted with the addition of silicon powder at 1703 K followed by quenching,thus forming a glassy sample.After 5-30-min reduction,the samples exhibited black opaque colour.Meanwhile,the samples that were reduced for 45-60 min had a bluish grey colour.Many iron-based particles dispersed in the samples were micrometre order in diameter.To determine the effect of iron particles on the optical properties of the sample,extinction,scattering and absorption efficiencies were calculated according to Mie theory.Result showed that both scattering on the iron particle and absorption by iron effectively increase the extinction efficiency in the mould flux.Moreover,the silicon particle in the flux has large scattering efficiency.The black opaque colour is contributed by the existence of silicon and iron particles.The apparent thermal conductivity was calculated for the solid flux.Results also indicated that the entire glassy mould flux would effectively work for mild cooling in a continuous casting process owing to high absorptivity and small thermal conductivity.

AIM:To analysis the factors that predict the response to entecavir therapy in chronic hepatitis patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotype C. METHODS:Fifty patients [hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-negative:HBeAg-positive = 26:24] with HBV genotype C, who received nave entecavir therapy for > 2 years, were analyzed. Patients who showed HBV DNA levels ≥ 3.0 log viral copies/mL after 2 years of entecavir therapy were designated as slow-responders, while those that showed < 3.0 log copies/mL were termed rapid- responders. Quantitative hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) levels (qHBsAg) were determined by the Architect HBsAg QT immunoassay. Hepatitis B core-related antigen was detected by enzyme immunoassay. Pre-C and Core promoter mutations were determined using by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Drug-resistance mutations were detected by the PCR-Invader method. RESULTS:At year 2, HBV DNA levels in all patients in the HBeAg-negative group were < 3.0 log copies/mL. In contrast, in the HBeAg-positive group, 41.7% were slow-responders, while 58.3% were rapid-responders. No entecavir-resistant mutants were detected in the slow-responders. When the pretreatment factors were compared between the slow-and rapid-responders; the median qHBsAg in the slow-responders was 4.57 log IU/mL, compared with 3.63 log IU/mL in the rapid-responders (P < 0.01). When the pretreatment factors predictive of HBV DNA-negative status at year 2 in all 50 patients were analyzed, HBeAg-negative status, low HBV DNA levels, and low qHBsAg levels were significant (P < 0.01). Multivariate analysis revealed that the low qHBsAg level was the most significant predictive factor (P = 0.03). CONCLUSION:Quantitation of HBsAg could be a useful indicator to predict response to entecavir therapy.

Room-temperature terahertz(THz)quantum cascade laser sources with intracavity difference-frequency nonlinear mixing are electrically pumped monolithic semiconductor laser sources operating in the 0.6–6 THz spectral range.We report widely tunable,low-frequency THz quantum cascade laser sources using a lens-coupled Cherenkov waveguide scheme.Based on a watt-class high-power,λ∼13.7μm quantum cascade laser,the monolithic THz source is strongly coupled with a high-resistivity silicon lens,which causes a major increase in the THz coupling efficiency and demonstrates significant performance improvements.A room-temperature 1.5 THz device produces a 0.2 mW peak output power with a high-quality beam pattern.Improved THz outcoupling efficiency using the lens-coupled scheme enabled the demonstration of a high-performance external-cavity semiconductor THz source that is tunable from 420 GHz to 2 THz.The external-cavity,lens-coupled device configuration can technically be assembled into a butterfly-style package for a thumb-sized,widely frequency tunable THz semiconductor source.

BACKGROUND Malignant lymphoma is a rare form of gallbladder malignancy.Most of these malignancies are diffuse large B-cell lymphomas or mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue-type lymphomas;however,Burkitt’s lymphoma of the gallbladder is extremely rare,and only two previous reports are available in the literature.Herein,we report a rare case of Burkitt’s lymphoma of the gallbladder mimicking gallbladder adenocarcinoma.CASE SUMMARY An 83-year-old man with no abdominal complaints was found to have a gallbladder tumor and periportal lymph node enlargement on computed tomography(CT)performed for hypertension screening.His laboratory data revealed slightly elevated serum levels of carcinoembryonic antigen and soluble interleukin 2 receptor.Imaging examinations revealed two irregular and contrastenhanced masses extending into the gallbladder lumen,but these did not infiltrate the serosa.Moreover,a periportal lymph node had enlarged to 30 mm.Based on these findings,we diagnosed the patient as having gallbladder adenocarcinoma with lymph node metastasis,which was treated using bile duct resection with gallbladder bed resection and periportal lymph node dissection.However,the patient was finally diagnosed as having Burkitt’s lymphoma.Although the surgical margin was pathologically negative,recurrence was noted at the hepatic radical margin and superior pancreaticoduodenal lymph nodes on positron emission tomography/CT soon after discharge.Thus,he was referred to a hematologist and started receiving treatment with reduced-dose cyclophosphamide,doxorubicin,vincristine,and prednisone.CONCLUSION Burkitt’s lymphoma can occur in the gallbladder.Biopsy can be useful in cases with findings suggestive of gallbladder malignant lymphoma.

The results of numerical simulation of the mosaic embedding iron ore sintering （MEBIOS） process according to the model presented in the first part of the study are introduced. The main objective of the second part is the elucidation of key factors influencing the process efficiency, particularly the sintering completeness, velocity of the heat wave propagation and maximum temperature achievable in the pellet during the wave propagation. Numerical results reveal that the mass fraction of coal, diameter of coal particles and air inlet velocity are of prime importance in determining efficiency of the MEBIOS sintering process.

Vortexes induced by tsunamis,“tsunami vortexes”,pose a potential danger for ship evacuation,and their prediction is important to determine their role in navigation and safe vessel evacuation.This study simulated tsunami-induced vortexes in Osaka Bay and investigated their spatial and temporal scales using a port-resolved,high-resolution tsunami model based on a scenario for the largest tsunamigenic earthquake expected to occur along the Nankai Trough in the near future.Vortexes induced by tidal currents were also evaluated using a realistic tidal simulation for comparison with the magnitudes of the tsunami vortexes.The tsunami simulation identified the dominant areas of the tsunami vortexes characterized by the magnitude of the vorticity.Unified maps of tsunami speeds and vortexes showed the difficult areas for ship evacuation and indicated that these areas can persist after the approach of the leading wave around the entrances to port areas.The areas of tsunami vortex formation were largely deduced by analyzing the vorticity fields in the tidal simulations,because the magnitude of tsunami-induced vorticities was closely correlated with that of the tide-induced vorticities.The combination of tide and tsunami simulations can identify areas of tsunami vortex formation and provide valuable information to guide measures for safer vessel evacuation.

Aim： To report two cases of the left testicular artery arching over the left renal vein （LRV） before running downward to the testis. Methods： The subjects were obtained from two Japanese cadavers. During the student course of gross-anatomical dissection, the anatomical relationship between the testicular vessels and the renal vein was specifically observed. Results： The arching left testicular artery arose from the aorta below the LRV and made a loop around the LRV, which appeared to be mildly compressed between the arching artery and the psoas major muscle. Conclusion： Clinically, compression of the LRV between the abdominal aorta and the superior mesenteric artery occasionally induces LRV hypertension, resulting in varicocele, orthostatic protenuria and hematuria. Considering that the incidence of a left arching testicular artery is higher than that of a right one, an arching left artery could be an additional cause of LRV hypertension. （Asian J Androl 2006 Jan; 8： 107-110）

We have isolated a recessive rice mutant, designated as indeterminate growth （ing）, which displays creeping and apparent heterochronic phenotypes in the vegetative period with lanky and winding culms. Rough mapping and subsequent molecular characterization revealed that the ing mutant carries a large deletion, which corresponds to a 103 kb region in the Nipponbare genome, containing nine annotated genes on chromosome 3. Of these annotated genes, the SLR1 gene encoding a DELLA protein is the only one that is well characterized in its function, and its null mutation, which is caused by a single base deletion in the middle of the intronless SLR1 gene, confers a slender phenotype that bears close resemblance to the ing mutant phenotype. The primary cause of the ing mutant phenotype is the deletion of the SLR1 gene, and the ing mutant appears to be the first characterized mutant having the entire SLR1 sequence deleted. Our results also suggest that the deleted region of 103 kb does not contain an indispensable gene, whose dysfunction must result in a lethal phenotype.
