Coupled simulation of BES-CFD and performance assessment of energy recovery ventilation system for office model

Thermal comfort and indoor air quality as well as the energy efficiency have been recognized as essential parts of sustainable building assessment. This work aims to analyze the energy conservation of the heat recovery ventilator and to investigate the effect of the air supply arrangement. Three types of mixing ventilation are chosen for the analysis of coupling ANSYS/FLUENT （a computational fluid dynamics （CFD） program） with TRNSYS （a building energy simulation （BES） software）. The adoption of mutual complementary boundary conditions for CFD and BES provides more accurate and complete information of indoor air distribution and thermal performance in buildings. A typical office-space situated in a middle storey is chosen for the analysis. The office-space is equipped with air-conditioners on the ceiling. A heat recovery ventilation system directly supplies flesh air to the office space. Its thermal performance and indoor air distribution predicted by the coupled method are compared under three types of ventilation system. When the supply and return openings for ventilation are arranged on the ceiling, there is no critical difference between the predictions of the coupled method and BES on the energy consumption of HVAC because PID control is adopted for the supply air temperature of the occupied zone. On the other hand, approximately 21% discrepancy for the heat recovery estimation in the maximum between the simulated results of coupled method and BES-only can be obviously found in the floor air supply ventilation case. The discrepancy emphasizes the necessity of coupling CFD with BES when vertical air temperature gradient exists. Our future target is to estimate the optimum design of heat recovery ventilation system to control CO2 concentration by adjusting flow rate of flesh air.

Important roles of graphene edges in carbon-based energy storage devices

Nanostructured carbon materials, including carbon nanotubes, graphene and nanoporous carbon, show promise for expanding renewable energy. In particular, the configuration and electronic properties of graphene edges in relation with their electrochemical activity have become a major issue in carbon-based energy storage devices. Here, we review recent results concerning the important roles of graphene edges as the gateway for lithium ion intercalation in the anode of lithium-ion batteries, as promoters of high capacitance in carbon-based supercapacitors, and as anchoring sites for Pt nanoparticles in fuel cells. We envisage that the controlled synthesis of a specific, clean, and stable edge configuration could be achieved to maximize the electrochemical performance of nanostructured carbon-based energy storage devices.

Influence of Separated Vortex on Aerodynamic Noise of an Airfoil Blade

In order to clarify the mechanism by which aerodynamic noise is generated from separated flow around an airfoil blade,the relation between the attack angle and the aerodynamic noise of the blade was analyzed using a wind tunnel experiment and a CFD *** the case of rear surface separation,the separated vortex which has a large-scale structure in the direction of the blade chord is transformed into a structure that concentrates at the trailing edge with an increase in the attack *** aerodynamic noise level then becomes small according to the vortex scale in the blade *** the flow is separated at the leading edge,a separated vortex of low pressure is formed at the vicinity of the trailing *** pressure fluctuations on the blade surface at the vicinity of the trailing edge become large due to the vortex in the *** is considered that the aerodynamic noise level increases when the flow is separated at the leading edge because the separated vortex is causing the fluctuations due to wake vortex shedding.

Effects of silicon addition on optical properties of mould flux with iron oxide and estimation of apparent thermal conductivity of flux

Precision surgery with the genetic assessment for operable pancreatic cancer beyond the radiological assessment alone

We congratulate *** and colleagues for their recently published study entitled“Precision oncology in surgery:Patient selection for operable pancreatic cancer”in Annals of Surgery(1).In this unique study,the authors tried to define preoperative clinical and molecular characteristics in order to improve patient selection for operable pancreatic *** ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC)remains the most lethal type of human cancer due to its high chemoresistance and invasiveness(2).In resected PDAC,the median overall survival has increased from 22.1 to 35 months during the past 10 years,largely owing to improvements in adjuvant therapies(3,4).On the other hand,the high recurrence rate even in patients who underwent curative resection,and chemoresistance in the recurrent sites to current systemic chemotherapies(FOLFIRINOX and nab-paclitaxel plus gemcitabine),are major issues in the treatment for unselected PDAC patient *** resection offers the only chance of cure,but surgery can be associated with significant morbidity and decreased activity of daily life(ADL),especially in the Whipple procedure(pancreaticoduodenectomy).Recently,the importance of preoperative chemotherapy even in operable PDAC has been increasingly recognized(5).Although molecular markers are being used more frequently to select patients for systemic targeted agents,only imaging modalities are used to stage patients and to assess their suitability for operative *** on primary surgery or a neoadjuvant approach are made without evaluation of biological measures of tumor aggressiveness,or of the risk of occult metastatic disease.

Numerical modeling of the development of southeastern Red Sea continental margin

The Red Sea continental margin （RSCM） corresponds to a wide hinge zone between Red Sea and Arabian plate. This margin has been studied through geological and geophysical observations primarily in regard to the evolution of Red Sea rift. This margin is characterized by occurrence of thin sediments, significant onshore uplift, tectonic subsidence of the offshore sedimentary basin, active faulting and seismicity. Studies indicate that sedimentary sequences of the margin are deformed by faults and folds resulting from at least two phases of extension and a phase of uplift. During the two phases of extension due to regional plate stress the sequence was cut by set of extensional faults. While during the phase of uplift the sequence was deformed by folding and faulting. The present paper aims to clear the structural development of RSCM during these tectonic episodes, taken as particular tectonic event, by two-dimensional finite element modeling on plane strain condition. Elastic theology is assumed for the oceanic, continental and transitional crust along with syntectonic deposits. Stress field, shear stress and fault distribution suggests that mantle plume weakened the crust following rifting due to regional stress and developed the margin. These results are well consistent with those from present seismicity, active faulting and neotectonic studies.

Inhibitory effects of carbon dioxide insufflation on pneumoperitoneum and bowel distension after percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy

The results of numerical simulation of the mosaic embedding iron ore sintering （MEBIOS） process according to the model presented in the first part of the study are introduced. The main objective of the second part is the elucidation of key factors influencing the process efficiency, particularly the sintering completeness, velocity of the heat wave propagation and maximum temperature achievable in the pellet during the wave propagation. Numerical results reveal that the mass fraction of coal, diameter of coal particles and air inlet velocity are of prime importance in determining efficiency of the MEBIOS sintering process.

Effect of calcium silicate on nutrient use of lowland rice and greenhouse gas emission from a paddy soil under alternating wetting and drying

In intensively irrigated rice cultivation,plant-available silicon(Si)is a crucial nutrient for improving rice *** a source of Si,calcium silicate(CaSiO3)was amended to evaluate the effect of silicate fertilizer on rice production,nitrogen(N)use efficiency,and greenhouse gas(GHG)emission under alternating wetting and drying in a pot experiment using a tropical soil from a paddy field of the International Rice Research Institute(IRRI)in the *** levels of CaSiO3 amendment,0,112.7,224.5,and 445.8 kg ha^-1,with the recommended N rate were *** results showed that although CaSiO3amendment of 112.7 kg ha^-1resulted in higher rice straw,improved N use efficiency,and reduced N2O emission,there was no difference in grain yield among the four levels of CaSiO3 amendment owing to relatively lower harvest ***,CaSiO3 amendment showed a reverse trend between CH4 and N2O emissions as it reduced N2O emission while led to significantly increased CH4 emission and global warming ***,CaSiO3 amendment was a possible alternative to improve N use efficiency and increase rice straw biomass,but it needs to be reviewed in line with grain yield production and GHG *** is also imperative to test an optimal method of silicate fertilizer amendment in future research in order to compromise a negative impact in tropical soils.
