The well-known Darken equation has been widely accepted in analyzing interdiffusion problems since 1948. The diffusion researchers have never conceived a doubt about the validity of Darken equation for such a long time. However, it is revealed that the Darken equation is inconsistent with the fundamental theory in mathematics. At the same time, it is clarified that the well-known intrinsic diffusion concept is an illusion. The present brief report will have a great influence on matters of the research and education relevant to diffusion problems not only in future but also in past, since the accumulated diffusivity data analyzed by the invalid Darken theory and the misjudged descriptions in existing text books should be revised or deleted as soon as possible.

Multi-Hazard Evaluation Using Cluster Analysis—For Designated Evacuation Centers of Yokohama

Hazard maps are usually prepared for each disaster, including seismic hazard maps, flood hazard maps, and landslide hazard maps. However, when the general public attempts to check their own disaster risk, most are likely not aware of the specific types of disaster. So, first of all, we need to know what kinds of hazards are important. However, the information that integrates multiple hazards is not well maintained, and there are few such studies. On the other hand, in Japan, a lot of hazard information is being released on the Internet. So, we summarized and assessed hazard data that can be accessed online regarding shelters (where evacuees live during disasters) and their catchments (areas assigned to each shelter) in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Based on the results, we investigated whether a grouping by cluster analysis would allow for multi-hazard assessment. We used four natural disasters (seismic, flood, tsunami, sediment disaster) and six parameters of other population and senior population. However, since the characteristics of the population and the senior population were almost the same, only population data was used in the final examination. From the cluster analysis, it was found that it is appropriate to group the designated evacuation centers in Yokohama City into six groups. In addition, each of the six groups was found to have explainable characteristics, confirming the effectiveness of multi-hazard creation using cluster analysis. For example, we divided, all hazards are low, both flood and Seismic hazards are high, sediment hazards are high, etc. In many Japanese cities, disaster prevention measures have been constructed in consideration of ground hazards, mainly for earthquake disasters. Operating diamond grits to produce a precise grind tool is need. In order to lift up a diamond grit by magnetic force, the magnetic flux was estimated to be 100 μT/g. Diamond (110) surface was modified with manganese powder at 450°C (720 K) then with bismuth powder at 270°C (540 K) due to its low melting temperature. Manganese carbides were formed on the diamond surface which was confirmed by an X-ray diffraction. A magnet that exhibits ferrimagnetism was formed on the surface, it had a spontaneous magnetism. We conducted to form six small disk magnets at hexagonal apex positions on the diamond (110) by using gold film mask. The magnetic flux measured at the center of the hexagon magnets on was 232 μT at room temperature, and the surface modified diamond grid could be lifted up in the magnetic field between two solenoid coils.

Coal-fired Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle （IGCC） and Integrated coal Gasification Fuel-cell Com- bined cycle （IGFC） are being developed as high-efficiency electric power generation technology. However, the highest theoretical gross thermal efficiency of the conventional IGCC]IGFC is still below 52~. In order to obtain higher power generation efficiency, an advanced IGCC （A-IGCC） or advanced IGFC （A-IGFC） sys- tem making use of the exergy recuperation concept by recycling waste heat from gas turbine or fuel cells for steam gasification of coal and biomass was proposed in our laboratory, Corresponding to this system, a novel high-density triple-bed combined circulating fluidized bed （TBCFB） gasifier, composed of a downer pyrolyzer, a bubbling fluidized bed char gasifier, and a riser combustor, was proposed to replace traditional gasifiers such as the entrained flow bed gasifier. The new system is expected to more effectively utilize the waste heat from gas turbines or fuel cells and the heat produced by the combustion of the unreacted char in the riser combustor for pyrolysis and gasification of coal and biomass. In this short review, the advantages and future challenges in the development of high-density TBCFB gasifier are presented and discussed.

A surface modification of diamond with manganese powder was attempted to make a magnetic functional surface for handling diamond. Manganese carbide, Mn7C3, was formed on diamond (110) by near-infrared radiation heating, resulting in a layered material with suppressing formation of Mn5C2. Investigated by a Hall-effect sensor, the magnetic flux density on the modified diamond surface showed ferromagnetic properties.

Structural characteristic of surface soil ground has great effect on the ground motion amplitude when earthquake happens. Recent studies in Japan on seismic zonings use a database that covers entire Japan with 1 km mesh size, which is useful for prefecture scale researches. However, it is hard, even with 500 m or 250 m mesh sizes to consider a city, a county or award as scale studies. Kanagawa Prefecture is highly urbanized and vulnerable to seismic disaster. The prefecture suffered a wide spread damage during the 1923 Kanto earthquake. In this paper, we deploy a very fine mesh 50 × 50 m mesh to develop a general seismic intensity map useful for micro scale disaster management for local governments and educational information for earthquake preparedness promotion. In this paper, first we prepared two detailed databases for 50 × 50 m mesh size over entire Kanagawa Prefecture. One was for geologic formations and the other the geomorphologic condition. Then these databases were used for preparation of high-resolution digital soil classification maps for 15 categories of micro landforms of prefecture. The later database was used for mapping the site amplification factors for 50 × 50 m mesh by applying the empirical relations for AVS30. We could create a GIS platform with sufficient accuracy to consider potential risk analysis.
