Experimental investigation on cohesionless sandy bank failure resulting from water level rising

In the last decade, sediment replenishment forming cohesionless sandy banks below dams has become an increasingly common practice in Japan to compensate for sediment deficits downstream. The erosion process of the placed cohesionless sediment is a combination of lateral toe-erosion and the following mass failure. To explore cohesionless bank failure mechanisms, a series of experiments was done in a soil tank using a compacted sandy soil mass exposed to an increasing water level. Two types of uniform sand(D50= 0.40 mm and 0.17 mm) and two bank heights（50 cm and 25 cm） were used under the condition of a constant bank slope of 75°. The three dimensional（3D） geometry of the bank after failure was measured using a handheld 3D scanner. The motion of bank failure was captured using the particle image velocimetry（PIV） technique, and the matric suction was measured by tensiometers. The compacted sandy soil was eroded by loss of matric suction accompanying the rise in water level which subsequently caused rotational slide and cantilever toppling failure due to destabilization of the bank. The effect of erosion protection resulting from the slumped blocks after these failures is discussed in the light of different failure mechanisms. Tensile strength is analyzed by inverse calculation of cantilever toppling failure events. The tensile strength had non-linear relation with degree of saturation and showed a *** findings of the study show that it is important to incorporate the non-linear relation of tensile strength into stability analysis of cantilever toppling failure and prediction of tension crack depth within unsaturated cohesionless banks.

In order to study the function of muscles of driver shoulder during vehicle steering, identification of relations between electromyograph (EMG) activity of 10 shoulder muscles and steering force was performed. The procedure was to perform controlled steering maneuver by right hand in a driving simulator, and based on analyzing the EMG data with steering force in the steering wheel plane, the function was identified. It was found that muscle function depends strongly on both steering rotation and steering torque directions. In clockwise steering, the long head of triceps brachii was the prime mover and an important contributor to clockwise moment, while the sternocostal portion of the pectoralis major, the lateral head of triceps brachii, biceps brachii and teres major were the important stabilizers or fixators. In contrast, in counterclockwise steering, the anterior, middle and posterior deltoid, the clavicular portion of the pectoralis major and infraspinatus were the prime movers and also the important contributors to counterclockwise moment, while the sternocostal portion of the pectoralis major, the lateral head of triceps brachii, biceps brachii and teres major were the important stabilizers or fixators. We conclude that the prime movers are primarily a consequence of steering direction, while the stabilizers or fixators are primarily constant. These results can be used to improve the neuromuscular model and estimate the steering comfort of driver.

The dynamic characteristics of ground soil using micro-tremor observation in Asia (Zushi and Ogasawara (Japan), Xi’an (China), Manila (Philippines), and Gujarat (India)) are studied. Ground micro-tremor signals were observed and analyzed by fast Fourier transform method (FFT). The response of ground soil to frequency of ground micro-tremor is revealed, and func- tions with frequency-dependence and frequency-selection of micro-tremor for different foundation soil strata are also researched. The horizontal to vertical spectral ratio (H/V, Nakamura technique) of micro-tremor observed at the surface ground was used to evaluate the site’s predominant period. This paper also discusses the application of micro-tremor on site safety evaluation, and gives the observed calculation results obtained at multiple points. The experimental foundation and the deduction process of the method are described in detail. Some problems of the method are pointed out. Potential use of the technique’s good expandable nature makes it a useable means for preventing and reducing disaster’s harmful effects.

We supercooled fresh-cut onion at−5℃ for 12 *** supercooling,the electric impedance properties of the samples were evaluated by electrical impedance spectroscopy over the frequency range of 42 Hz−5 *** time-temperature profiles of samples indicated that the freezing point and supercooling point were−2.3℃±0.7℃ and−6.9℃±1.0℃,*** results indicated that 34 of the 36 supercooled samples exhibited a definite circular arc in the Cole-Cole plot,which suggested that the cell membrane remained intact during *** the other two samples which did not exhibit a definite circular arc,the cell membrane had sustained serious damage during ***,there was large difference in drip loss percentage between supercooled samples exhibited a definite circular arc in the Cole-Cole plot and samples not exhibiting a definite circular *** results suggest that fresh-cut onions can be supercooled at−5℃.

The silkworm genome encodes three iron storage proteins or ferritins, FerlHCH, Fer2LCH, and Fer3HCH. Probing our EST library constructed from 1-day- old silkworm eggs revealed only Fer2LCH mRNA, which encoded for a protein with a predicted putative N-glycosylation site. Developmental and tissue expression analyses dur- ing embryogenesis revealed that Fer2LCH mRNA was abundant from 6 h to 6 days after oviposition. Transcriptional expression of Fer2LCH during the postembryonic stage is also high in the larval fat body and mid-gut, and then is upregulated in all pupal tissues tested. We found that Fer2LCHmRNA contains an iron-responsive element, suggesting this fer- ritin subunit is subject to translational control. Although ferritin expression has been shown to increase following immune challenge in other insects, the levels of Fer2LCH mRNA were not significantly induced following viral or bacterial infection ofBombyx mori. Using a baculovirus expression system we expressed recombinant BmFer2LCH protein, which was detectable in the cytoplasmic fraction, likely in a compartment of the secretory path- way, and was shown to undergo posttranslational modifications including N-glycosylation. In particular, rBmFer2LCH carbohydrate chains were composed ofmannose and GlcNAc. We suggest that Fer2LCH is important for iron homeostasis and maintaining normal organ function in silkworms.

During mountain torrents, large-magnitude floods may result from heavy rainfall and cause the breakage of landslide dams naturally formed by heavy rainfall, earthquakes, and so on. The characteristics of longitudinal spreading of clear water discharge and changes in flow depth must be clarified because the changes in peak depth have not yet been examined in steep-slope torrents and because there are few data on spreading of flash floods and related sedimentation in mountainous torrents. In the present study, experimental data were collected through hydraulic model tests over a rigid bed, and the spreading of water, fine sediment, bed load, and large boulders due to flooding are discussed assuming that flash flooding/debris flows occur in the upstream reach. The effects of changes in flow width, such as expansions and contractions in the flow width, as well as changes in meandering channels, sediment transportation, and spreading flow depth resulting from bores are examined using flume data for a steepslope torrent. The data obtained in the present study reveal that fine sediment components are transported to the downstream reach if large-magnitude floods occur and that the spreading rate and peak lags of the fine sediment and water level indicate the occurrence of a flood in the upstream reach.

Hepatitis B virus(HBV) is still a worldwide health concern. While divergent factors are involved in its pathogenesis, it is now clear that HBV RNAs, principally templates for viral proteins and viral DNAs, have diverse biological functions involved in HBV pathogenesis. These functions include viral replication, hepatic fibrosis and hepatocarcinogenesis. Depending on the sequence similarities, HBV RNAs may act as sponges for host mi RNAs and may deregulate mi RNA functions, possibly leading to pathological consequences. Some parts of the HBV RNA molecule may function as viralderived mi RNA, which regulates viral replication. HBV DNA can integrate into the host genomic DNA and produce novel viral-host fusion RNA, which may have pathological functions. To date, elimination of HBVderived covalently closed circular DNA has not been achieved. However, RNA transcription silencing may be an alternative practical approach to treat HBVinduced pathogenesis. A full understanding of HBV RNA transcription and the biological functions of HBV RNA may open a new avenue for the development of novel HBV therapeutics.
