Cell sheet technology for regeneration of esophageal mucosa

The progress of tissue-engineering technology has realized development of new therapies to treat various disorders by using cultured cells. Cell-and tissue-based therapies have been successfully applied to human patients, and several tissue-engineered products have been approved by the regulatory agencies and are commercially available. In the review article, we describe our experience of development and clinical application of cell sheet-based regenerative *** mucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) have been shown to be useful for removal of gastrointestinal neoplasms with less invasiveness compared with open surgery, especially in esophageal surgery. However, postoperative inflammation and stenosis are major complications observed after intensive mucosal resection. Therefore, we have developed novel regenerative medicine to prevent such complications and promote wound healing of esophageal mucosa after EMR or ESD. Transplantable oral mucosal epithelial cell sheets were fabricated from patients' own oral mucosa. Immediately after EMR or ESD, fabricated autologous cell sheets were endoscopically transplanted to the ulcer sites. We performed a preclinical study with a canine model. In human clinical settings, cell culture and cell sheet fabrication were performed in clean rooms according to good manufacturing practice guidelines, and pharmaceutical drugs were used as supplements to culture medium in place of research regents used in animal study. We believe that cell-based regenerative medicine would be useful to improve quality of life of patients after EMR or ESD.

Thera no stic nano particles are integrated systems useful for simulta neous diag nosis and imaging guided delivery of therapeutic drugs, with wide ranging pote ntial applicati ons in the clinic. Here we developed a thera no stic nan oparticle (~24 nm size by dynamic light scatteri ng) p-FE-PTX-FA based on polymeric micelle encapsulating an organic dye (FE) fluorescing in the 1,000-1,700 nm second near-infrared (NIR-Ⅱ) window and an an ti-ca ncer drug paclitaxel. Folic acid (FA) was conjugated to the nan oparticles to afford specific binding to molecular folate receptors on muri ne breast can cer 4T1 tumor cells. In vivo, the nan oparticles accumulated in 4T1 tumor through both passive and active targeting effect. Under an 808 nm laser excitation, fluorescence detection above 1,300 nm afforded a large Stokes shift, allowing targeted molecular imaging tumor with high signal to background ratios, reaching a high tumor to normal tissue signal ratio (T/NT) of (20.0±2.3). Further, 4T1 tumors on mice were completed eradicated by paclitaxel released from p-FE-PTA-FA within 20 days of the first injection. Pharmacokinetics and histology studies indicated p-FE-PTX-FA had no obvious toxic side effects to major organs. This represented the first NIR-Ⅱ theranostic age nt developed.

Aims: To investigate the effects of a newly developed color-coded educational glucose control instruction (COLOR), combined with a color-displayed glucose meter on changes in type-2 diabetes patient’s behavior and their HbA1c levels. Material and Methods: Patients using a COLOR-self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) method were instructed to record daily blood glucose levels with red (high glucose ≥ 180 mg/dL) or blue (low glucose ≤ 70 mg/dL) colored circles on their SMBG notebooks according to the colors displayed on the glucose meter. Results: COLOR-SMBG showed an improved the actual behavior modification scores by 14% compared to Conventional group at 1-month follow-up

Fungal Isolate “KMI” Is a New Type of Orchid Mycorrhizal Fungus

We analyzed an isolate of fungus that seems to be a new type orchid mycorrhizal fungus, “KMI (refers to Kyoto-Ma- tsubara-Ishii)”, obtained from the roots of Paphiopedilum thailandense Fowl. KMI has hyphal branching into right angle similar to Rhizoctonia-like fungi, but its spore formation resembled Nectoria, which is known as a teleomorph of Fusarium rather than Rhizoctonia. Its ribosomal DNA sequences of 18S and ITS have no similarity with any known fungal species. Proteins in molecular weight of 53 and 24 kDa, which are common to mycorrhizal fungi, were detected in KMI. When KMI was inoculated onto orchids, however it didn’t form pelotons or coils, but the hyphae in the root tissues were observed and the tissues were not decayed. No significant symptoms of Rhizoctonia or Fusarium disease, however, were developed on tomato and cucumber plants. The evidences suggest that KMI is a new type of orchid mycorrhizal fungus.

A New Type of a Magnetic Plane Motor Coupled Mechanical Vibration with Electromagnetic Force

This paper proposes a new magnetic plane motor capable of rotation by the resonance energy of double-cantilever beam model excited by an electromagnetic force. This magnetic plane motor has two double-cantilever models, and the rotational direction is able to change by changing of the vibration mode. Basic characteristics of a prototype for the magnetic plane motor, such as rotational speed, output torque and efficiency were determined experimentally. Experimental results demonstrated that the rotational speed of 8.1 rpm was obtained with output torque of 0.07 Ncm for the magnetic plane motor having double-cantilever model. The output torque characteristics of the magnetic plane motor with two double-cantilever models improved 200 percent compared with double-cantilever model.

Ectopic hepatocellular carcinoma mimicking a retroperitoneal tumor:A case report

Temporal Fossa Abscess Caused by Apical Periodontitis: A Case Report

According to the progress of the antibiotic medicine, the severe infection case is decreasing recently. We recently experienced a case of temporal fossa abscess caused by periapical periodontitis the upper left side of the second molar. A 79-year-old woman visited to Showa University Dental Hospital complaining of the painful swelling at the left side of the temporal and trismus. The routine blood test exhibited a severe inflammation. We performed drainage treatment at temporal skin and normal oral bacterial flora was detected by the bacteriological examination. Under treatment included the administration of antibiotics, the inflammation healed without serious complication and she recovered completely.

Augmented reality: The use of the PicoLinker smart glasses improves wire insertion under fluoroscopy

AIM To demonstrate the feasibility of the wearable smart glasses, Pico Linker, in guide wire insertion under fluoroscopic guidance. METHODS Under a fluoroscope, a surgeon inserted 3 mm guide wires into plastic femurs from the lateral cortex to the femoral head center while the surgeon did or did not wear Pico Linker, which are wearable smart glasses where the fluoroscopic video was displayed(10 guide wires each). RESULTS The tip apex distance, radiation exposure time and total insertion time were significantly shorter while wearing the Pico Linker smart glasses. CONCLUSION This study indicated that the Pico Linker smart glasses can improve accuracy, reduce radiation exposure time, and reduce total insertion time. This is due to the fact that the Pico Linker smart glasses enable surgeons to keep their eyes on the operation field.

Correlation between Aerodynamic Noise and Velocity Fluctuation of Tip Leakage Flow of Axial Flow Fan

In the present paper the attention is focused on correlation between fan noise and velocity fluctuations of tip leakage vortex around rotor blade of a low pressure axial flow fan at the maximum pressure operating point. We measured time fluctuating velocity near the rotor tip around the rotor blades by using a hot-wire sensor from a relative flame of refer- ence fixed to the rotor blades. As the results, it is clear that the velocity fluctuation due to tip leakage vortex has weak periodicity and the hump portion appeared in its spectrum. If the flow rate was lower than the design condition, the tip leakage flow became to attach to the following blade and the sound pressure level at frequency of velocity fluctuation of this flow was increased. The correlation measurements between the velocity fluctuation of tip leakage flow and the aerodynamic noise were made using a rotating hot-wire sensor near the rotor tip in the rotating frame. The correlation between the velocity fluctuation due to tip leakage flow and acoustic pressure were increased due to generation of weak acoustic resonance at the maximum pressure operating point.
