The mass spectra of five peptides with biological activities are reported. All mass spectra were recorded using a 4.7-T Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer equipped with an external electrospray source. The accurate molecular weights for the five peptides prepared by solid phase synthesis were measured as 1765.9013, 1063.5420, 1092.5254, 820.3804 and 1078.5193, respectively. All the data were obtained with the external calibration. Differences between observed and theoretical monoisotopic molecular weights were in the (0.2-1.0)×10-6 range. The complete primary sequence for the five polypep-tides were determined using the method of in-source electrospray ionization/collision induced dissociation (ESI/CID). All the intact y series ions and b series ions were obtained from various peptides respectively, thus determining the sequences of the five polypeptides. Background Hepatitis B virus （HBV） infection remains a global public health problem and it is an important cause of acute,chronic and fulminant hepatitis,liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular *** prevalence of HBV infection in Hong Kong over the past decade remained unchanged at 10%,despite the implementation of universal neonatal and availability of adult *** suspect that the current state of affairs is attributable to inadequate awareness and knowledge of HBV transmission and prevention in the general population,resulting in a low rate of uptake of HBV vaccination by the lay ***,we have embarked in this study to evaluate the awareness and knowledge on HBV infection in our local Chinese population,their attitude on the prevention of horizontal transmission of HBV,and the use of HBV vaccination,especially in those who were born before the era of universal neonatal *** The factors associated with HBV screening,vaccination uptake,and knowledge were examined in a face-to-face questionnaire survey on a group of adult Chinese in Hong *** Within this group,14% was considered to have good knowledge for HBV infection,and 26% had HBV ***,occupation,having children,and family monthly income,are independent factors associated with *** This study suggests insufficient public awareness of HBV infection in the Hong Kong Adult Chinese population.

Intra- and Inter-Observer Reproducibility of Ultrasound Measurements of Pelvic Inlet Diameter in Pregnant Women

Objectives: To determine intra- and inter-observer reproducibility of the ultrasound measurement of pelvic inlet in the first trimester of pregnancy. Methods: Transabdominal pelvic ultrasound was performed to measure the pelvic inlet anteroposterior diameter using a 2D probe in twelve Chinese women having a singleton pregnancy. Scans were performed in the first trimester by three sonographers. The pelvic inlet anteroposterior diameter was defined as the distance between the anterior surfaces of the sacral promontory and the superior medial border of the pubic bone most adjacent to the pubic symphysis. Intra-observer repeatability was determined and analysis of variance was performed to assess inter-observer measurements. The bias between any two sonographers’ measurements was assessed by calculating the 95% confidence interval for the mean difference between sonographers paired measurements. Results: Intra-observer reproducibility was 0.71 cm. Analysis of variance indicated that there was no significant difference between sonographers’ measurements (p = 0.46). The bias between two sonographers’ measurements ranged from 0.05 to 0.32 cm. Conclusion: It is technically feasible to measure the pelvic inlet diameter using ultrasound (USG) at the first trimester. High inter-observer reproducibility can be achieved. Further studies are required to establish the potential role of this technique and the measurement of the pelvic inlet diameter in prediction of labor outcome.

Background Asthma is a significant chronic health problem worldwide. Management aims at disease control by reducing functional impairment and exacerbations and improving quality of life (QoL). We report a multi-center study to survey asthma control and QoL in four cities in the Pearl River Delta. Methods The conjoint survey involved ten Hong Kong pediatric hospitals/units, two Shenzhen hospitals, two Macao hos-pitals, and two Guangzhou hospitals on asthma control (using Asthma Control Test) and QoL (Pediatric Allergic Disease Quality of Life Questionnaire, PADQLQ). Acceptability of a treatment is graded as very good/good/fair/poor. Results Good asthma control was only reported in 80% subjects in Hong Kong, but higher in sister cities (85–94%, P<0.001). Allergic rhinitis, 'incense burning', and 'smoker in family' were prevalent among the four cities. Logistic regres-sion showed better control of asthma was associated with better PADQLQ (B=?0.029, P < 0.001), better acceptability of bronchodilator (B=?1.488, P = 0.025), negatively with 'smoker in family' (B=?0.83, P = 0.015) and various PADQLQ domains. Conversely, worse PADQLQ was associated with allergic rhinitis severity (B=4.77, P <0.001), poor control of asthma (B=7.56, P <0.001), increased frequency of traditional Chinese medicine use (B=1.7, P < 0.05), increased fre-quency of bronchodilator usage (B=1.05, P < 0.05), 'smoker in family' (B=4.05, P < 0.05), and incense burning at home (B=3.9, P < 0.05). Conclusions There are some clinical and cultural differences among the four southern Chinese cities within the Guangdong province. This study identifies potentially modifiable environmental and treatment factors associated with poor asthma control and QoL for health-care interventions. Having a smoker in the family is independently associated with poor asthma control and QoL.
