In vitro assessment of the synergism between extracts of Cocos nucifera husk and some standard antibiotics

objective: To evaluate the interactions between the crude extracts of Cocos nucifera(***) and six front line antibiotics(ampicillin sodium salt, penicillin G sodium,amoxicillin, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin and tetracycline hydrochloride), against some bacterial pathogens linked with human ***: The pulverized husk of *** was dissolved in 95% n-hexane and extracted using Soxhlet extraction method and sterile distilled water(aqueous).The antibacterial susceptibility of the crude extracts of *** was tested against environmental and clinical strains(6) obtained from the South African Bureau of Standards(SABS), Vibrio(6) and Listeria pathogens(6).The agar-well diffusion method was used for screening the extracts for their antibacterial *** minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration of the extracts were ***-kill assay was used to evaluate bactericidal and/or bacteriostatic *** synergistic effect of the crude extracts and antibiotics was assessed and evaluated by adopting the checkerboard ***: With the time-kill assay, the highest bactericidal activity was observed on Vibrio fluvialis EL041 with a-5.6 ± 0.2 log_(10)CFU/mL decrease in cell density as a result of the combination of the extracts and chloramphenicol at two-fold minimum inhibitory *** using the time-kill assay constituted about 72%, while indifference constituted about 28%.The checkerboard method revealed synergistic interaction in 67% of the combinations, and indifference in 33%.There was no specificity in the observed synergy to a particular class of ***: This investigation suggests the crude extracts of *** to be a potential broad spectrum antimicrobial ***, further study is needed to isolate the pure compounds from these crude extracts.

Colorectal cancer(CRC)is among the leading causes of cancer *** lifetime risk of developing CRC is about 5%in adult males and *** is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage,and at this point therapy has a limited impact on cure rates and long-term *** and/or improved CRC therapeutic options are *** involvement of microRNAs(miRNAs)in cancer development has been reported,and their regulation in many oncogenic pathways suggests their potent tumor suppressor *** miRNAs provide a promising therapeutic approach for cancer,challenges such as biodegradation,specificity,stability and toxicity,impede their progression into clinical *** strategies offer diverse advantages for the use of miRNAs for CRC-targeted delivery and *** merits of using nanocarriers for targeted delivery of miRNA-formulations are presented herein to highlight the role they can play in miRNA-based CRC therapy by targeting different stages of the disease.

Antipredatory call behavior of lapwing species in an Afrotropical environment

Predation is an important source of natural selection on prey species and has resulted in adaptations such as antipredator vocal signals,which can alert others to the presence of predators and solicit cooperative *** vocal alarm signals of birds have been well studied,they are poorly known in tropical African *** address this lack of information,the antipredatory signals and responses of two lapwings(Wattled Lapwing Vanellus senegallus and Spur-winged Lapwing Vanellus spinosus)to potential predators were investigated using data collected from focal observation,distance measurements,focal recordings,and playback *** lapwing calls elicited to predators were classified as alarm or mobbing calls based on whether the calls elicited alert behavior or attack from other *** linear analysis(DLA)was used to compare the time and frequency parameters of the call types measured in Raven ***,lapwings’responses to intruders,alert and start distance,time of day,and latency,as well as the effects of flock size and distance to cover were *** 48%of all calls was correctly classified by *** best predictors of call type for the lapwings were maximum frequency and high *** alarm and mobbing calls were elicited by African Wattled Lapwings to dogs and *** calls were elicited to intruders by the Spur-winged *** distance was positively associated with start distance,and differed between morning and evening in both *** scarce information from tropical Africa,this study put in perspective vocal and antipredator behavior of lapwing species in Africa.

Diagnostic Utility of Salivary Matrix Metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) in Chronic Periodontitis: A Novel Approach

Currently, diagnosis of chronic periodontitis is based on clinical methods which are cumbersome and have been shown to have inherent errors and drawbacks including inability to detect active disease. There is therefore an urgent need for a timely, cost-effective and less cumbersome method. Salivary matrix metalloproteinase-8 has been shown in some studies to be a promising bio-marker of chronic periodontitis. This was a case-control study conducted at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. It had 40 cases and 40 controls designed to assess the diagnostic ability of salivary MMP-8 in periodontal disease. Unstimulated whole saliva was assessed using the Quantikine human total MMP-8 ELISA kit from R&D? systems Europe.

organic wastes are one of the greatest challenges that cities face worldwide. In numerous underdeveloped nations, like Cameroon, waste is often disposed of through landfills, composting, or open-air combustion. Unfortunately, the concept of waste sorting and organic waste processing is new to many individuals. This has led to an increase in the amount of organic waste and the costs connected with its management. Consequently, the majority of developing nations have sought out waste management solutions that are more cost-effective. Therefore, it has been determined that the bioconversion of organic wastes by black soldier fly larvae (BSFLs) (Hermetia illucens) into multifunctional prepupae is a viable alternative. Appreciation is given to the employment of the organic waste management approach in developing nations since it is not only environmentally friendly and economically viable, but also provides a means for waste valorisation through the production of diverse resources and potential economic benefits. Studies have proved the usefulness of the insect in controlling organic wastes, but countries such as Cameroon are still unfamiliar with the nuances of this method. Consequently, this timely review examined the performance of the BSFL, specifically in organic waste treatment, as well as the best practices for multiplying them to determine its viability for use in a waste treatment plant, the production of high-quality larvae as a source of protein for livestock, and the production of diesel fuel.

Inpatient bed allocation policy under uncertain capacity

This paper concerns the problem of inpatient bed allocation for two classes of patients(scheduled and non-scheduled)when there is uncertainty about daily available *** the afternoon of each day,patients from the scheduled class,also called backlogged elective admissions,are selected from a waiting list,for the admission on the next *** non-scheduled class,also called emergent admissions,are new requests that arise randomly each day with emergent *** capacity of available beds for a medical specialty to provide hospitalization services is uncertain when backlogged elective pa-tients are *** too many of elective patients may result in exceeding a day’s capacity,which can potentially necessitate"overflowing"or"postponing"some emergent requests that should be performed as soon as ***,the problem faced by the medical specialty facility at the decision-making point of each day is how many of the backlogged elective patients can be *** formulate this problem as a Markov decision process(MDP)and study the structural properties of the model to characterize the nature of the optimal *** propose easy-to-implement policies(the fixed quota policy and the best fixed quota policy),which perform well under fitted *** reporting numerical analyses using real data from a Chinese public hospital,we finally compare the improvements that our proposed solutions could bring to the hospital with the existing practices under several different cost structures.

Solitary Plasmacytoma of the Zygoma in a 70-Year-old Nigerian: A Case Report and Review of Literature

Purpose: Solitary bone plasmacytoma [SBP] is a localised variant of plasma cell tumor which commonly affects the axial skeleton but rarely found in the maxillofacial region. We hereby report an unusual case of solitary plasmacytoma of the right zygomatic bone in a 70-year-old Nigerian. Case Report: The patient presented with a painless right zygomatic swelling of 2 years duration. Examination showed that the swelling was of mixed consistency [mostly bony but firm in some areas] and it measured about 8 × 8 cm. Radiographic examination revealed an osteolytic lesion over the right zygoma with involvement of the apex and lateral wall of the antrum. An initial working diagnosis of ossifying fibroma was made and the patient was scheduled for surgery. Histological staining with H & E and immunohistochemistry of the surgical specimen however confirmed a diagnosis of SBP. Serum monoclonal protein and Bence jones proteinuria was negative throughout the follow up period. Conclusion: SBP of the maxillofacial region is amenable to surgery combined with postoperative radiotherapy. However, prognosis can be worsened with tumor recurrence or dissemination into MM. Thus patients with SBP must be closely followed up after treatment so that immediate therapeutic steps can be taken if recurrence or systemic dissemination is encountered.

Development of an Environmentally Friendly in-situ Pack-Cyaniding Technique

A safe and environmentally friendly cyaniding method has been developed to mitigate the toxic impacts of cyanide salts on the environment during conventional cyaniding. The method entails in-situ diffusion of nascent cyanide from mature cassava leaves into the surface of mild steel components via pack-cyaniding. Both high-temperature in-situ diffusion into austenite and low-temperature in-situ diffusion into ferrite were explored. Results from light and scanning electron microscopic studies showed that surface hardness of the steel components was substantially increased. The waste product was a harmless biodegradable organic compound that posed no disposal threats. This study is important for increasing the wear resistance of ferrous parts for a longer service life in application without polluting the environment.

Ceramic electrochemical cells(CECs)are promising devices for clean and efficient energy conversion and storage due to their high energy efficiency,more extended system durability,and less expensive ***,the search for suitable materials with desired properties,including high ionic and electronic conductivity,thermal stability,and chemical compatibility,presents ongoing challenges that impede widespread adoption and further advancement in the *** intelligence(AI)has emerged as a versatile tool capable of enhancing and expediting the materials discovery cycle in CECs through data-driven modeling,simulation,and optimization ***,we comprehensively review the state-of-the-art AI applications for materials design and optimization for CECs,covering various material aspects,database construction,data pre-processing,and AI *** also present some representative case studies of AI-predicted and synthesized materials for CECs and provide insightful highlights about their *** emphasize the main implications and contributions of the AI approach for advancing the CEC technology,such as reducing the trial-and-error experiments,exploring the vast materials space,discovering novel and optimal materials,and enhancing the understanding of the materials-performance *** also discuss the AI approach’s main limitations and future directions for CECs,such as addressing the data and model challenges,improving and extending the AI models and methods,and integrating with other computational and experimental *** conclude by suggesting some potential applications and collaborations for AI in materials design for CECs.
