Perfect Solvent- and Catalyst-Free Syntheses of Imine Derivatives Using the Pressure Reduction Technique

In the field of organic syntheses, the development of environmentally friendly methods based on the concept of green chemistry has been always required. In response to this requirement, we reported solvent- and catalyst-free syntheses of imines using the pressure reduction technique as a key technology. We found that this reaction proceeded very rapidly in the initial stage, but its rate decreased with the passage of time. It was also found that the reaction of benzaldehyde with aniline had a specificity that the phase transition occurred. In this method, the desired imines could be obtained in good to excellent yields, but target compounds had to be given by purifications using organic solvents. Therefore, we tried to develop the perfect synthetic method of imine derivatives without organic or inorganic solvents. We selected two methods and took them into this investigation. One was exactly mixing (1:1, substance ratio) aldehydes and amines and the other was employing lower pressure (>0.1 mmHg, previous method: 1.0 mmHg) at the pressure reducing technique. When this improved synthetic method was performed, it was revealed that pure target imines were obtained in excellent yields without any purification.

Physical and Microbiological Properties of Alfalfa-Established Soil in the Semiarid Horqin Sandy Land in Northern China

In a previous article, we reported that a local variety of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. cv. Aohan) had high potential to be a pioneer plant for ecological restoration in the Horqin Sandy Land, China. The plantation of Aohan significantly improved the organic matter, clay, total carbon and nitrogen contents of the soils. In this study, we investigated the physical properties such as dispersion ratio, water-stable aggregates content, and the soil microbiomes, five years after alfalfa establishment in the same study site. We found no significant difference in the dispersion ratios between the soils before and after alfalfa establishment, and all the soils at the study site were erosive. Water stable aggregates mainly distributed in 96%, suggesting that it would take longer time for improving soil structure. However, large-size aggregates (2 - 5 mm) content was slightly higher in the alfalfa planting plots. This slight increase is presumed to have long-term importance for soil and ecosystem recovery in semi-arid areas like Horqin Sandy Land. Moreover, we also found that Actinomycetes dominated the microbial community in both bulk and rhizosphere soils, and two kinds of rhizobia, Bradyrhizobium and Sinorhizobium fredii, were identified in the rhizosphere soil.

CNN-based segmentation frameworks for structural component and earthquake damage determinations using UAV images

Buildings undergo various kinds of structural damage during earthquakes,and damage detection and functional assessment of these structures in the aftermath of the events have been challenging *** these circumstances,computer vision techniques offer a promising solution by automating the inspection *** study presents an effective methodology for automatic structural components and damage detection using unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)images of damaged *** types of neural network architectures are considered for appropriate feature extractions in different task *** feature pyramid network(FPN)is employed for crack,spall,rebar,and component damage segmentation,while the UNet++network is utilized for the damage *** network training and validation,a total of 3805 original images of size 1920×1080 pixels are processed by the proposed method and reduced the image *** the FPN,the achieved highest intersection over unions(IoUs)were 0.59,0.93,0.42,and 0.99 for crack,spall,rebar,and components,*** predicted labels were found in close agreement with the ***,the UNet++recognized the semantic information and damage state with an IoU of *** demonstrated the applicability of the proposed method for automated post-earthquake building inspection process accurately without information loss from the original images.

This report describes a rare case of metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) presenting a huge mass in the left external auditory canal (EAC). The patient was a 55-year-old man with hepatitis B virus-related HCC. He presented to our department with a three-month history of increasing left otalgia,and hearing loss with recent fresh aural bleeding. Histopathologic examination indicated that the tumor was secondary to HCC. Although external irradiation was not effective,the tumor was treated with surgical debulking and high dose rate 192 Ir remote afterloading system (RALS) for postoperative intracavitary irradiation. A review of the literature revealed only five other cases of HCC metastasis to the temporal bone,all of which mainly metastasized in the internal acoustic meatus. The present case is the first report of HCC metastasis to the EAC.

诊断松萎蔫病的传统方法是从木质组织中分离松材线虫,然后用显微镜进行形态学鉴定。基于DNA分子检测的方法尽管很灵敏,不需要固定发育阶段的松材线虫,但是仍然需要用Baer-mann漏斗法分离线虫,并且需要昂贵的仪器。笔者研发了利用环介导恒温扩增法检测松材线虫的存在,该方法包括:(1)从木块中提取DNA;(2)DNA扩增;(3)通过反应溶液的颜色做出诊断。该方法仅使用培养箱且整个过程只需要90 min,比以往方法更加简便和快速。

Integrating Complimentary and Alternative Medicine in Form of Active Hexose Co-Related Compound (AHCC) in the Management of Head &Neck Cancer Patients

Objectives: The Active Hexose Correlated Compound (AHCC), is produced from mushroom mycerium and rich in alpha glucans was administered to the cancer patients along with chemotherapy to see if it is having any beneficial effects on the final outcome in terms of reducing side effects of chemotherapy, maintaining the general condition and having effect on tumor control. Methods: Twenty five patients were administered AHCC along with conventional palliative chemotherapy regimen out of which sixteen patients received paclitaxel, and cisplatinum/carboplatin, nine patients received combination of cisplatim and 5-Flurouracil. All the patients were having advance stage (T3/T4) head and neck cancers. Thirteen patients were cancer of cheek, followed by cancer of tongue (4), oro-pharyngeal cancer (6) and cancer of naso-pharynx (2). Results: All the patients tolerated AHCC well with no added symptoms. Twenty patients reported that they are feeling stronger than before at the time of initiation of chemotherapy cycles. Almost all the patients reported to have better appetite after they started taking AHCC. Twelve patients who required blood transfusion before chemotherapy cycles, decrease in the rate of fall in hemoglobin was observed in these patients and only three patients required blood transfusion before subsequent chemotherapy cycles. In 22 patients definite reduction of chemotherapy side effects like nausea, vomiting, drop in total leucocytes count, loose motion/constipation etc. were observed, which reduced the hospital stay of these patients. Tumor regressed in 11 patients, 8 patients had stable disease and in rest of the patients, the disease progressed. Conclusions: AHCC up to 3 g is safe to administer and definitely helps cancer patients in reducing side effects of chemotherapeutic drugs, getting a sense of wellbeing and improved intake maintains general condition as well as prepare them to continue and tolerate further cycles in a better way.

BACKGROUND Although clinical use of sofosbuvir plus ribavirin has been approved for patients infected with genotype 2 hepatitis C virus,patients≥75-years-old have not been included in previous clinical *** To evaluate the real-world safety and efficacy of sofosbuvir plus ribavirin for elderly patients(≥75-years-old)compared to nonelderly patients,we conducted a post-marketing prospective cohort *** We treated 265 patients with genotype 2 hepatitis C virus using standard approved doses of sofosbuvir(400 mg/d)plus ribavirin adjusted by body weight,administered orally for 12 *** Sustained virological response rates for the overall cohort,patients<65-years-old,≥65-years-old but<75-years-old,and≥75-years-old were 97%(258/265),98%(93/95),97%(84/87),and 98%(81/83),respectively(P=0.842).Logistic regression analyses identified history of hepatocellular carcinoma treatment and alpha-fetoprotein as factors significantly associated with sustained virological ***-fetoprotein was the only independent factor *** virological response rate was significantly lower for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma treatment(91%)than for patients without history of hepatocellular carcinoma treatment(98%,P=0.004).One patient(0.4%)discontinued treatment due to drug-induced *** reduction or interruption of ribavirin was required for 12.1%(32/265)of patients because of anemia,including 7.7%(14/182)of patients<75-years-old and 21.7%(18/83)of patients≥75-years-old(P=0.002).CONCLUSION Although ribavirin dose reduction or interruption was required with advanced age,sofosbuvir plus ribavirin appears tolerable and highly effective even in patients≥75-years-old.

Femoral Nerve Pulsy due to Iliopsoas Muscle Hematoma: A Mini Literature Review

We encountered a patient who developed femoral nerve paralysis due to iliopsoas muscle hematoma. Surgical removal of the hematoma is recommended for such cases, but conservative treatment may also be sufficient and there are no clear judgment criteria. An investigation of past reports showed that recovery was faster after surgery than after conservative treatment, regardless of the severity of paralysis, and that hematoma removal was especially effective for cases with severe paralysis. In our case, pain of the femoral nerve-innervated region was rapidly relieved by removal of the hematoma.

Qualitative Comparison between Rats and Humans in Quadrupedal and Bipedal Locomotion

Bipedal (Bp) locomotion is one of the most characteristic motor behaviors in human beings. Innate quadrupedal (Qp) four-legged animals also often walk bipedally. The walking posture, however, is significantly different between the two. This suggests that although both have a potential to walk bipedally, however, the human has a body scheme suitable for Bp locomotion, probably its skeletal system. The skeletal system includes the lumbar lordosis, sacral kyphosis, a round pelvis, a large femur neck angle, short feet, and so on. To verify this hypothesis, we compared kinematic and EMG activities between rats and humans during Qp and Bp locomotion on a treadmill belt. The rat is a representative Qp animal, but it is able to acquire Bp walking capability with motor learning. Although the mobile ranges of the hindlimb joint are different during each locomotor pattern between rats and humans, both showed replicable flexion and extension excursion patterns for each joint depending on the locomotor phase. There are many phase-locked EMG bursts between rats and humans during the same walking task and these are observed in the proximal rather than the distal muscles. This suggests that both rats and humans utilize similar neuronal systems for the elaboration of Qp and Bp locomotion. It was interesting that both subjects showed more muscle activities during non-natural locomotor patterns;Qp < Bp for rats and Bp < Qp for humans. This indicates that rat Bp and human Qp walking need more effort and we may be able to find its reason in their skeletal system.

Posterior Cruciate Ligament Ganglion: Case Report

Intra-articular ganglion of the knee is uncommon and it shows non-specific symptoms. In this report, we present for a treatment of the ganglion arising from the PCL and the mechanism of pain. The case is a 33-year-old male with pain in his left knee. On presentation, he had no history of locking or giving way of the knee, but had pain on standing. At the first medical examination, the range of motion of his knee was full, with no loss of extension, and there was no effusion or swelling, but the terminal knee flexion was painful. McMurray’s test was negative, and the collateral and cruciate ligaments were clinically stable. On MRI, ganglion cysts droved from PCL appear as well-defined cystic multiloculated masses. The patient underwent arthroscopy through the standard anteromedial and anterolateral portals. Consequently, it was diagnosed as a ganglion cyst. The pain disappeared completely after the surgery and neither PCL ganglion nor symptoms recurred up to 9 months post-surgery. The intra-articular ganglion of the knee often is asymptomatic and discovered incidentally. But the reports of ganglion cysts of the knee have been increasing with the increasing availability and use of MRI. We considered that the mechanism of the pain due to ganglion in the cruciate ligament was stimulation of the synovial nerve terminal. One key point for consideration in this study is that arthroscopy should be performed through posterior portal to observe the whole of the PCL and ganglion cysts because it was difficult to observe both the PCL and ganglion cysts with anterior portal. While arthroscopy did not confirm continuity of the ACL and meniscus, it was considered that the ganglion cysts developed in the PCL because of the continuity with the PCL.
