Effects of multimodal microstructure on fracture toughness and its anisotropy of LPSO-type extruded Mg-1Zn-2Y alloys

The fracture toughness of extruded Mg-1Zn-2Y(at.%)alloys,featuring a multimodal microstructure containing fine dynamically recrystallized(DRXed)grains with random crystallographic orientation and coarse-worked grains with a strong fiber texture,was *** DRXed grains comprised randomly oriented equiaxedα-Mg *** contrast,the worked grains includedα-Mg and long-period stacking ordered(LPSO)phases that extended in the extrusion direction(ED).Both types displayed a strong texture,aligning the(10.10)direction parallel to the *** volume fractions of the DRXed and worked grains were controlled by adjusting the extrusion *** the longitudinal-transverse(L-T)orientation,where the loading direction was aligned parallel to the ED,there was a tendency for the conditional fracture toughness,KQ,tended to increase as the volume fraction of the worked grains ***,the KQ values in the T-L orientation,where the loading direction was perpendicular to the ED,decreased with an increase in the volume fraction of the worked *** suggests strong anisotropy in the fracture toughness of the specimen with a high volume fraction of the worked grains,relative to the test *** worked grains,which included the LPSO phase and were elongated perpendicular to the initial crack plane,suppressed the straight crack extension,causing crack deflection,and generating secondary ***,these worked grains significantly contributed to the fracture toughness of the extruded Mg-1Zn-2Y alloys in the L-T orientation.

This paper aims to analyze the synchronization phenomena in the system consisting of n identical metronomes on a hanging plate by using the describing function（DF） method, which deals with the driving torque as a discontinuous function of the angle and angular velocity of each metronome. Different from a previous study on the synchronization of the system with the first harmonic of the angle of each metronome having the same amplitude, this paper analyzes the synchronization without any assumption on the amplitudes of n metronomes. By investigating the relation between the motion of the hanging plate（common base） and n metronomes, this paper characterizes the synchronization phenomena by the following two types of synchronization:One is the inherent synchronization, whose frequency and amplitude of all synchronized metronomes are the same as those of a single metronome on a fixed base. The other is the non-inherent synchronization, which includes the in-phase synchronization with the same amplitude, and the synchronization with different amplitudes. The analytical results are validated by numerical simulation for three metronomes about the synchronization with the same or different amplitudes.

Differential Rate of Dry Rot in <i>Dioscorea rotundata</i>(White Yam) along the Tuber Length Due to Rot Causing Fungi

The susceptibility of different regions in Dioscorea rotundata (white yam) tuber to rot infecting fungi was investigated. Isolation was made from the periphery of the rotted tuber tissues, followed by a pathogenicity test and identification of isolates. Three fungi associated with D. rotundata (white yam) were isolated;they include Penicillium oxalicum, Aspergillus niger and Rhizopus stolonifer. Each of the isolates from pure cultures were inoculated on the head, middle and tail regions of healthy yam tubers. The three fungi were found to be pathogenic at different rates at the head, middle and tail ends of the yam tuber respectively. The head region was less susceptible to the three fungi with the following rot depths (P. oxalicum 25 mma, A. niger 18.2 mma and R. stolenifer 12.7 mmb). Rot depth in the middle region was (P. oxalicum 15 mma, A. niger 10.6 mma and R. stolenifer 8.8 mmb). While the tail region of the yam tuber recorded rot depth of (P. oxalicum 32.0 mma, A. niger 26.4 mma and R. stolenifer 20.8 mmb) respectively. Generally, the tail region of D. rotundata was more susceptible to fungal attack and the rot recorded in the tail region was significantly different from rot at the middle and the head. It was recommended that yam tubers should be stacked with their head on the ground to reduce incidence of rotting in stock-piled yam tubers.

Novel and safer endoscopic cholecystectomy using only a flexible endoscope via single port

AIM: To apply the laparoscopic and endoscopic cooperative surgery concept, we investigated whether endoscopic cholecystectomy could be performed more safely and rapidly via only 1 port or ***: Two dogs(11 and 13-mo-old female Beagle) were used in this study. Only 1 blunt port was created, and a flexible endoscope with a tip attachment was inserted between the fundus of gallbladder and liver. After local injection of saline to the gallbladder bed, resection of the gallbladder bed from the liver was performed. After complete resection of the gallbladder bed, the gallbladder was pulled up to resect its neck using the Ring-shaped thread technique. The neck of the gallbladder was cut using scissor forceps. Resected gallbladder was retrieved using endoscopic net forceps via a port. RESULTS: The operation times from general anesthetizing with sevoflurane to finishing the closure of the blunt port site were about 50 min and 60 min respectively. The resection times of gallbladder bed were about 15 min and 13 min respectively without liver injury and bleeding at all. Feed were given just after next day of operation, and they had a good appetite. Two dogs are in good health now and no complications for 1 mo after endoscopic cholecystectomy using only a flexible endoscope via one ***: We are sure of great feasibility of endoscopic cholecystectomy via single port for human.

BACKGROUND Hyperplastic polyps are considered non-neoplastic, whereas sessile serrated lesions(SSLs) are precursors of cancer via the ‘‘serrated neoplastic pathway’’. The clinical features of SSLs are tumor size(> 5 mm), location in the proximal colon, coverage with abundant mucus called the ‘‘mucus cap’’, indistinct borders, and a cloud-like surface. The features in magnifying narrow-band imaging are varicose microvascular vessels and expanded crypt openings. However, accurate diagnosis is often *** To develop a diagnostic score system for *** We retrospectively reviewed consecutive patients who underwent endoscopic resection during colonoscopy at the Toyoshima endoscopy clinic. We collected data on serrated polyps diagnosed by endoscopic or pathological examination. The significant factors for the diagnosis of SSLs were assessed using logistic regression analysis. Each item that was significant in multivariate analysis was assigned 1 point, with the sum of these points defined as the endoscopic SSL diagnosis score. The optimal cut-off value of the endoscopic SSL diagnosis score was determined by receiver-operating characteristic curve *** Among 1288 polyps that were endoscopically removed, we analyzed 232 diagnosed as serrated polyps by endoscopic or pathological examination. In the univariate analysis, the location(proximal colon), size(> 5 mm), mucus cap, indistinct borders, cloud-like surface, and varicose microvascular vessels were significantly associated with the diagnosis of SSLs. In the multivariate analysis, size(> 5 mm;P = 0.033), mucus cap(P = 0.005), and indistinct borders(P = 0.033) were independently associated with the diagnosis of SSLs. Outcomes of gastrointestinal defect closure with an overthe-scope clip system in a multicenter experience: An analysis of a successful suction method

To demonstrate the clinical outcomes of a multicenter experience and to suggest guidelines for choosing a suction *** retrospective study at 5 medical centers involved 58 consecutive patients undergoing over-the-scope clips (OTSCs) placement. The overall rates of technical success (TSR), clinical success (CSR), complications, and procedure time were analyzed as major outcomes. Subsequently, 56 patients, excluding two cases that used the Anchor device, were divided into two groups: 14 cases of simple suction (SS-group) and 42 cases using the Twin Grasper (TG-group). Secondary evaluation was performed to clarify the predictors of OTSC *** TSR, CSR, complication rate, and median procedure time were 89.7%, 84.5%, 1.8%, and 8 (range 1-36) min, respectively, demonstrating good outcomes. However, significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of the mean procedure time (5.9 min vs 14.1 min). The CSR of the SS- and TG-groups among cases with a maximum defect size ≤ 10 mm and immediate or acute refractory bleeding was 100%, which suggests that SS is a better method than TG in terms of time efficacy. The CSR in the SS-group (78.6%), despite the technical success of the SS method (TSR, 100%), tended to decrease due to delayed leakage compared to that in the TG-group (TSR, CSR; 88.1%), indicating that TG may be desirable for leaks and fistulae with defects of the entire *** system is a safe and effective therapeutic option for gastrointestinal defects. Individualized selection of the suction method based on particular clinical conditions may contribute to the improvement of OTSC success.

This paper addresses the synchronization problem of the non-uniform Kuramoto oscillators,i.e.,the Kuramoto oscillators with non-homogeneous damping coefficients and coupling *** a solution to this problem,we present a new necessary condition for the synchronization of the n oscillators,and show that it is tighter than an existing necessary condition proposed in D ¨orfler and Bullo（SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization,vol.50,no.3,2012）.For the oscillators of cases of n = 3,4,and 5,our numerical simulation investigations of 10000 systems for each case with the parameters generated randomly show that the conservativeness of the existing condition is reduced considerably by our newly presented condition.

Implantable Venous Access Ports for Chemotherapy in Lung Cancer Patients: Comparison of the Femoral and Subclavian Vein Approaches without Guidance

Background: The goal of this study was to retrospectively compare the initial success rate and rate of intraoperative and late complications between the femoral and subclavian vein approaches used to implant venous access ports without guidance in lung cancer patients. Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of total 163 lung cancer patients who underwent implantations of a central venous access port for chemotherapy. 95 patients received the ports by the femoral vein blind-puncture technique and 68patients had the port implanted via the subclavian vein blind-puncture technique. The initial success rate of port implantation and the frequency of occurrence of complications were calculated. Results: The primary success rate of venous port implantation was 93.7% for femoral approach and 88.2% for the subclavian approach respectively (p < 0.05). Intraoperative complications developed in two patients (2.1%) in the femoral approach group and in five patients (7.4%) in the subclavian approach group. Although a higher intraoperative complication ratio for the subclavian approach was encountered compared to that for the femoral vein approach, there was no statistically significant difference (p = 0.103). Nor was there any statistically significant difference in terms of the occurrence of late complications. Conclusions: Venous access port implantation via the femoral vein approach is safe, and its success rate is very high, with the equal complication rates comparable to the subclavian approach. This approach avoids many of the intraoperative complications. Thus, the femoral vein approach for implanting a venous access port in lung cancer patients should be considered a valid, and safe technique.
