Vitamin D for the prevention and treatment of pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic cancer is ranked fi fth among cancer-related deaths worldwide with a 5-year survival rate of less than 5%. Currently, surgery is the only effective therapy. However, most patients are diagnosed in the late stage and are not suitable for receiving curative surgery. Moreover, pancreatic cancer doesn't respond well to traditional chemotherapy and radiotherapy, leaving little effective treatment for advanced pancreatic cancer cases. 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1α,25(OH)2D3], the biologically active form of vitamin D3, was originally identifi ed during studies of calcium and bone metabolism, though it is now recognized that it exerts biological effects in almost every tissue in the body. Abundant evidence has shown that 1α,25(OH)2D3 has antiproliferative, apoptotic, pro-differentiation and antiangiogensis effects in many types of cancer cells in vivo and in vitro, including breast, prostate, and colon. Similarly, the antitumor growth effect of 1α,25(OH)2D3 on pancreatic cells has been demonstrated. The clinical use of 1α,25(OH)2D3 is impeded by the lethal side effects of hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria. Therefore, 1α,25(OH)2D3 analogs, which are either equipotent or more potent than 1α,25(OH)2D3 in inhibiting tumor cell growth but with fewer hypercalcemic and hypercalciuric side effects, have been developed for the treatment of different cancers. Recently, a pre-clinical study demonstrated that a less calcemic analog of 1α,25(OH)2D3, 19-nor-1α,25(OH)2D2 (Paricalcitol), is effective in inhibiting tumor growth in vitro and in vivo , via upregulation of p21 and p27 tumor suppressor genes. Studies on the anti-tumor effects of a more potent analog of Paricalcitol are underway.1α,25(OH)2D3 and its analogs are potentially attractive novel therapies for pancreatic cancer.

Hydrocarbon pneumonitis following fuel siphonage: A case report and literature review

BACKGROUND: people sometimes siphon fuel to fill their tanks. However, this is a potentially dangerous procedure and may cause hydrocarbon pneumonitis. We present the case of a patient with severe hydrocarbon pneumonitis after siphoning fuel. The patient underwent artifi cial ventilation and was admitted to hospital for 97 days. METHODS: We review the relevant literature for a better understanding of clinical features and management strategies for hydrocarbon pneumonitis following fuel ***: We reviewed 15 articles, which included 3 original articles and 12 case reports that reported the clinical features of fuel siphonage. in addition, we added our presented case for data analysis. A total of 40 cases were included in this review. The literature review found that hydrocarbon pneumonitis caused by fuel siphonage occurs worldwide and that most patients(80%) became symptomatic within 1 day of aspiration. Cough(70%), chest pain(62.5%), dyspnoea(55%), and fever(52.5%) presented in more than half of all patients. The right middle lobe(80%) was the predominantly involved lung fi eld; more than one-third of patients(36.7%) showed the involvement of two ***: Patient history, computed tomographic scans of the chest, and bronchoalveolar lavage are the commonly used diagnostic tools. Supportive care remains the foundation of treatment, whereas antibiotics, steroids, and bronchoalveolar lavage are practical therapies. Patients' clinical improvement precedes the resolution of lesions on chest X-ray. Most complications arise from pulmonary lesions. The prognosis of patients suffering from hydrocarbon pneumonitis following fuel siphonage might be improved by accurate diagnosis and appropriate care.

in order to improve the gaseous and electrochemical hydrogen storage kinetics of the M2Nitype alloy, the elements Cu and Nd were added in the alloy. The nanocrystalline and amorphous Mg2Ni-type alloys with the composition of（Mg24Ni10Cu2）100-xNdx（x = 0, 5, 10, 15, 20） were prepared by melt spinning technology. The effects of Nd content on the structures and hydrogen storage kinetics of the alloys were investigated. The characterization by X-ray diffraction（XRD）, transmission electron microscopy（TEM） and scanning electron microscopy（SEM） reveals that all the as-cast alloys hold multiphase structures, contai.ing Mg2Ni-type major phase as well as some secondary phases Mg6Ni, Nd5Mg41, and Nd Ni, whose amounts clearly grow with increasing Nd content. Furthermore, the as-spun Nd-free alloy displays an entire nanocrystalline structure, whereas the as-spun Nd-added alloys hold a mixed structure of nanocrystalline and amorphous structure and the amorphization degree of the alloys visibly increases with the rising of the Nd content, suggesting that the addition of Nd facilitates the glass forming in the Mg2Ni-type alloy. The measurement of the hydrogen storage kinetics indicates that the addition of Nd significantly improves the gaseous and electrochemical hydrogen storage kinetics of the alloys. The addition of Nd enhances the diffusion ability of hydrogen atoms in the alloy, but it impairs the charge-transfer reaction on the surface of the alloy electrode, which makes the high rate discharge ability（HRD） of the alloy electrode fi rst mount up and then go down with the growing of Nd content.

Splenic tumors are rare. Differentiation of the tumors before operation is of great value regarding the outcome. A case of a 32-year-old man with a splenic inflammatory pseudotumor (iPT) mimicking splenic angiosarcoma is described. The tumor was highly suspected of being splenic angiosarcoma based on radiological findings preoperatively. However, after splenectomy, histopathological examinations revealed splenic iPT. Splenic iPT and angiosarcoma are rare and often pose diagnostic difficulties because the clinical and radiological fi ndings are obscure. Due to large differences in prognosis, we briefl y reviewed the clinical, radiological, and pathological features of both of the tumors.

BACKGROUND: Accurate diagnosis of infected aortic and iliac aneurysms is often delayed, hampering timely treatment and potentially resulting in a fatal consequence. The aim of this study was to discover useful clinical features that can help physicians to identify these ***: We reviewed the discharge notes from two hospitals and identifi ed all patients who had a diagnosis of infected aneurysms of the thoracoabdominal aorta and iliac arteries between July 2009 and December 2013. Eighteen patients, aged from 41 to 93, were reviewed. Only 6 patients were diagnosed accurately in their fi rst visit to our ***: Most patients had at least one underlying illness, and it took 1 to 30(9.9±6.5) days for physicians to diagnose their infected aneurysm. Localized pain and fever were the two most commonly presented symptoms. The majority(92%) of isolated microorganisms were gram-negative bacilli, including Salmonella spp, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Escherichia coli. Two of the 3 patients who underwent non-operative therapy died, and all of the patients who underwent a combination of medical and operative therapies ***: We suggest that physicians liberally use computed tomography scans on patients with unknown causes of pain and inflammatory processes. A combination of surgical and medical treatments is indicated for all patients with infected aortic and iliac aneurysms.

Mechanical behaviors of alumina ceramics doped with rare-earth oxides

The effects of three types of additives Y2O3, La2O3, and Sm2O3 on the sintering and mechanical behaviors of alumina ceramics were investigated. The bending strengths of alumina ceramics with Sm2O3 and Y2O3 additions were 455 and 439 MPa, respectively, higher than that with La2O3 addition. The fi＇acture toughness of the ceramics with Sm2O3 and Y2O3 were also higher than that with La2O3 addition. The fracture mode of rare earth oxides doped alumina ceramics exhibited obvious transgranular fractures as well as intergranular fracture. The results of research show that the improvement of bending strength and fracture toughness of alumina ceramics with rare earth oxides was achieved by refining the grain size and strengthening the grain boundary.

Aims:During the COViD-19 epidemic,chest computed tomography(CT)has been highly recommended for screen-ing of patients with suspected COViD-19 because of an unclear contact history,overlapping clinical features,and an overwhelmed health ***,there has not been a full comparison of CT for diagnosis of heart failure or COViD-19 ***:Patients with heart failure(n=23)or COViD-19 pneumonia(n=23)and one patient with both diseases were retrospectively *** information and chest CT images were obtai.ed and ***:There was no difference in ground-glass opacity,consolidation,crazy paving pattern,the lobes affected,and septal thickening between heart failure and COViD-19 ***,a less rounded morphology(4%vs.70%,P=0.00092),more peribronchovascular thickening(70%vs.35%,P=0.018)and fi ssural thickening(43%vs.4%,P=0.002),and less peripheral distribution(30%vs.87%,P=0.00085)were found in the heart failure group than in the COViD-19 ***,there were also more patients with upper pulmonary vein enlargement(61%vs.4%,P=0.00087),subpleural effusion(50%vs.0%,P=0.00058),and cardiac enlargement(61%vs.4%,P=0.00075)in the heart failure group than in the COViD-19 ***,more fi brous lesions were found in the COViD-19 group,although there was no statistical difference(22%vs.4%,P=0.080).Conclusions:Although there is some overlap of CT features between heart failure and COViD-19,CT is still a useful tool for differentiating COViD-19 pneumonia.

Recently, 5d transition metal iridates have been reported as promising materials for the manttfacture of exotic quan- tum states. Apart from the semimetallic ground states that have been observed, perovskite SrlrO3 is also predicted to have a lattice-symmetrically protected topological state in the （110） plane due to its strong： spin-orbil coupling and electron correlation. Compared with non-polar （001）-SflrO3, the especial polarity of （110）-SrirC）3 undoubtedly adds the： difficulty of fabrication and largely impedes the research on its surface states. Here, we have successfully synthesized high-quality （110）-SflrO3 thin films on （110）-SrtiO3 substrates by reactive molecular beam epitaxy fi^r the first time. Both reflec- tion high-energy electron diffraction pattems and x-ray diffraction measurements suggest the expected orientation and outstanding crystallinity. A （1 × 2） surface reconstruction driven from the surface instabiJity, the. same as that reported in （110）-SrtiO3, is observed. The electric transport measurements uncover that （110）-SrirO3 exhibits a more prominent semimetallic property in comparison to （001）-SrirO3.

The downward continuation of potential fields is a process of calculating their values in a lower plane based on those of a certai. *** technology is not only a data processing method for resource exploration but also plays an extremely important role in military ***,the downward continuation of potential fields is a typical linear inverse problem that is *** minimal residuals(GMRES)is an eff ective solution to ill-posed inverse problems,but it is unstable under the condition wherein the GMRES is directly applied in the calculation ***,the long-term behavior of its iterative computation is a disordered,divergent ***,to obtai. stable solutions,GMRES is applied to solve the normal equations of the downward continuation of potential fields;it is also used to prequalify for occasional interruptions in the operation process by adding the damping coefficient,thus strengthening the stability conditions of the equations of residual ***,the stable downward continuation of the potential fields method is *** indicated by the theoretical data and the measured testing data,the method proposed in this paper has the advantages of high-precision and excellent ***,compared with the tikhonov iteration method,the proposed method avoids the need to choose regularization parameters.
