High-frequency magnetic stimulation attenuates beta-amyloid protein 1-42 neurotoxicity in organotypic hippocampal slices

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation （rTMS） has been utilized as a therapeutic tool for neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer＇s disease. However, the precise mechanisms of its clinical effects remain unknown. β-amyloid （Aβ） exhibits direct neurotoxic effects and is closely related to neuronal degeneration in Alzheimer＇s disease. Therefore, it has been hypothesized that the neuroprotective effects of rTMS are related to the mechanisms of protection against Aβ neurotoxicity. Organotypic hippocampal slices were prepared from 8-day old, Sprague Dawley rats. The tissue slices were exposed to 100 μmol/L Al3142 since day 12 in vitro with and without high-frequency （20 Hz） magnetic stimulation. Magnetic stimulation efficacy was evaluated by measuring neuronal nuclei （NeuN） protein expression and by observing cultures following propidium iodide fluorescence staining and bromodeoxyuridine （BrdU） immunohistochemistry. Lactate dehydrogenase activity was detected in the culture media to evaluate hippocampal neuronal damage. Our results demonstrated that high-frequency magnetic stimulation significantly reversed the reduction of NeuN protein expression because of Aβ1-42 exposure （P 〈 0.05） and significantly reduced the number of damaged cells in the hippocampal slices （P 〈 0.05）. However, lactate dehydrogenase levels and anti-BrdU staining results did not reveal any statistical differences These findings indicate that high-frequency magnetic stimulation might have protective effect on hippocampal neurons from Aβ1-42 neurotoxicity.

Preparation of Ultrafine Tungsten Powder by Sol-Gel Method

Sol-gel method was employed for the preparation of nanoscale tungsten powder. The effects of different preparation conditions on particle size were discussed and the optimum preparation condition was found. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scan electron microscopy and so on. The results show that the intermediate is monoclinic WO3, its particle shape is approximately spherical, and the particle size distribution is narrow. The average particle size is about 60 nm. After deoxidization, WO3 turns into cubic tungsten powder with small particle size （average particle size about 120 nm） and narrow size distribution.

Analysis of connectivity in Ad-hoc network based on interference and fading channel

In Ad-hoc wireless network, connectivity is a fundamental issue which restricts the design of system protocol. Based on the theory of stochastic geometry, a connectivity model focused on signal-to-interference （SIR） ratio is set up in presence of Nakagami-m fading and interference. This paper derives a close formula of connectivity probability with interference and Nakagami-m fading which is never obtained in previous works. Two-dimension shot-noise theory in stochastic geometry for interference is well applied. The formula is verified by simulation. The results show that the connectivity is affected by the scatter of users, wireless propagation environment, interference and so on.

Novel triple therapy for hemorrhagic ascites caused by endometriosis:A case report

BACKGROUND Massive hemorrhagic ascites caused by endometriosis is exceedingly rare,and the treatment strategy remains ***,we report a case of endometriosis with massive hemorrhagic ascites treated with a novel triple therapy including conservative surgery,gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist,and then *** SUMMARY A 28-year-old nulliparous patient was admitted to Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University,and exploratory laparoscopy was performed.A total of 9500 mL of brown ascites was aspirated from the pelvic cavity,the bilateral ovaries strongly adhered to the posterior of the uterus and were fixed to the pelvic floor,and endometriotic cysts were not observed in either *** pelvic and abdominal peritonea were covered with patchy red,white,and brown endometriotic lesions and *** surgical resection of endometriotic lesions on the peritoneum was performed while we simultaneously collected multiple peritoneal *** final pathological diagnosis was endometriosis coupled with hemorrhagic necrotic *** Postoperative injection of gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist was provided three times,followed by dienogest administration,and we will continue to follow up with this ongoing treatment.

Anomalously Large Deformation in Some Medium and Heavy Nuclei

We investigate the properties of the Ce isotopes with neutron number N =60 - 90 and the properties of the heavy nuclei near 242Am within the framework of deformed relativistic mean-field （RMF） theory. A systematic comparison between theoretical results and experimental data is made. The calculated binding energies, two-neutron separation energies, and two-proton separation energies are in good agreement with experimental ones. The variation trend of experimental quadrupole deformation parameters on the Ce isotopes can be approximately reproduced by the RMF model. It is found that there exists an abnormally large deformation in the ground state of proton-rich Ce isotopes. This phenomenon can be the general behavior of proton-rich nuclei on the neighboring isotopic chains such as Nd and Sin isotopes. For the heavy nuclei near ^242 Am the properties of the ground state and superdeformed isomeric state can be approximately reproduced by the RMF model. The mechanism of the appearance of anomalously large deformation or superdeformation is analyzed and its influence on nuclear properties is discussed. Parther experiments to study the anomalously large deformation in some proton-rich nuclei are suggested.

Effect of Shouldering Angle on Distribution of Thermal Stress in Sapphire Single Crystal Growth Using Improved Kyropoulos

A two-dimensional model was established in the rectangular co-ordinate to study the thermal stress in the sapphire single crystal grown by the improved Kyropoulos. In the simulation, the distribution, the maximum and minimum values of the thermal stress were calculated. In addition, the relationship between the thermal stress and the shouldering angles was obtained that for lower shouldering angles, the maximum of the thermal stress value is lower and the minimum value is higher. It indicates that the distribution of the thermal stress can be improved by decreasing the shouldering angles of the crystal during the growth process. To evaluate the model, the experiment was carried out and the results are in good agreement with the calculation.

Mature pollen grains （PGs） from most plant species are metabolically quiescent. However, once pollinated onto stigma, they quickly hydrate and germinate. A PG can give rise to a vegetative cell-derived polarized pollen tube （PT）, which represents a specialized polar cell. The polarized PT grows by the tip and requires interaction of different signaling molecules localized in the apical plasma membrane and active membrane trafficking. The mechanisms underlying the interaction and membrane trafficking are not well understood. In this work, we purified PG and PT plasma-membrane vesicles from Lilium davidii Duch. using the aqueous two-phase partition technique, then enriched plasma membrane proteins by using Brij58 and KCl to remove loosely bound contaminants. We identified 223 integral and membrane-associated proteins in the plasma membrane of PGs and PTs by using isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification （iTRAQ） and 2-D high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. More than 68% of the proteins have putative transmembrane domains and/or lipid-modified motifs. Proteins involved in signal transduction, membrane trafficking and transport are predominant in the plasma-membrane proteome. We revealed most components of the clathrin-dependent endocytosis pathway. Statistical analysis revealed 14 proteins differentially expressed in the two development stages： in PTs, six upregulated and eight downregulated are mainly involved in signaling, transport and membrane trafficking. These results provide novel insights into polarized PT growth.

Influence of Nitrogen Vacancy Concentration on Mechanical and Electrical Properties of Rocksalt Zirconium Nitride Films

To study the influence of the nitrogen vacancy （VN） on mechanical and electrical properties of zirconium nitride deeply, ZrNx films with different VN concentrations were synthesized on the Si （111） substrates by enhanced magnetic filtering arc ion plating. The morphologies, microstructures, residual stresses, compositions, chemical states, mechanical and electrical properties of the as-deposited films were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry, Nanoindenter and Hall effect measurements. The results showed that ZrNx films exhibited rocksalt single-phase structure within a VN concentration ranging from 26 to 5%. The preferred orientation, thickness, grain size and residual stress of the ZrNx films kept constant at different VN concentrations. Both the nanohardness and elastic modulus first increased and then decreased with the decrease in VN concentration, reaching the peaks around 16%. And the electric conductivity of the ZrNx films showed a similar tendency with nanohardness. The underlying atomic-scale mechanisms of VN concentration-dependent hardness and electric conductivity enhancements were discussed and attributed to the different electronic band structures, rather than conventional meso-scale factors, such as preferred orientation, grain size and residual stress.

Different efficiency toward the biomimetic aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol in microchannel and bubble column reactors: Hydrodynamic characteristics and gas–liquid mass transfer

The selective aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde has attracted considerable attention because benzaldehyde is a high value-added product. The rate of this typical gas–liquid reaction is significantly affected by mass transfer. In this study, CoTPP-mediated(CoTPP: cobalt(II) mesotetraphenylporphyrin) selective benzyl alcohol oxidation with oxygen was conducted in a membrane microchannel(MMC) reactor and a bubble column(BC) reactor, respectively. We observed that 83% benzyl alcohol was converted within 6.5 min in the MMC reactor, but only less than 10% benzyl alcohol was converted in the BC reactor. Hydrodynamic characteristics and gas–liquid mass transfer performances were compared for the MMC and BC reactors. The MMC reactor was assumed to be a plug flow reactor,and the dimensionless variance was 0.29. Compared to the BC reactor, the gas–liquid mass transfer was intensified significantly in MMC reactor. It could be ascribed to the high gas holdup(2.9 times higher than that of BC reactor), liquid film mass transfer coefficient(8.2 times higher than that of BC reactor), and mass transfer coefficient per unit interfacial area(3.8 times higher than that of BC reactor). Moreover,the Hatta number for the MMC reactor reached up to 0.61, which was about 15 times higher than that of the BC reactor. The computational fluid dynamics calculations for mass fractions in both liquid and gas phases were consistent with the experimental data.
