Background: Progressive insulin resistance (IR) is an important pathophysiologic mechanism of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Homeostatic model assessment (HOMA) is commonly used as a parameter of the severity of insulin resistance. Aims: To determine indices of insulin resistance (IR) and β-cell function in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted from March 2017 to September 2018 at Department of Endocrinology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh. The study was performed with 41 GDM and equal number of pregnant women with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) diagnosed on basis of WHO criterion-2013 during 24 - 40 weeks of gestation. Serum glucose was measured by glucose oxidase method and fasting serum insulin was measured by chemiluminescent immunoassay. Equations of homeostatic model assessment (HOMA) were used to calculate insulin indices like-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), β-cell function (HOMA-B) and insulin sensitivity (HOMA-%S). Data were analyzed and compared by statistical tests. Results: A total of eighty-two (82) subjects [41 women with GDM (age: 28.29 ± 3.79 years, BMI: 27.16 ± 4.13 kg/m2) and 41 women with NGT (age: 26.22 ± 5.13 years, BMI: 25.27 ± 3.01 kg/m2)] were included in this study. It was observed that GDM women were significantly older (p = 0.041) and had significantly higher BMI (p = 0.020) than pregnant women with NGT. Background: Patients of acute leukemia require careful assessment of liver function prior to start chemotherapy to determine which drugs may be appropriate or to be modified. Post chemotherapy abnormalities of liver function tests may be due to drugs or due to disease process itself. Objective: To evaluate the status of liver function in acute leukemia patients before and after induction chemotherapy. Methodology: This was a prospective cross-sectional study conducted in the Department of Biochemistry, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, Bangladesh from January 2017 to December 2017 on fifty (50) newly diagnosed patients of acute leukemia who fulfilled the selection criteria. Blood samples for serum total bilirubin, alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) were collected before chemotherapy (Day 1) and after induction chemotherapy on 14th day and 30th day. Serum ALT and AST were measured by kinetic method and serum total bilirubin was measured by DMSO method. Data were analyzed and compared by statistical tests. Result: In this study, the mean level of serum total bilirubin before chemotherapy at day 1 was 0.89 ± 0.64 mg/dl. It was significantly (p Conclusion: It is concluded that serum total bilirubin, ALT and AST increase in response to chemotherapeutic drugs during treatment of acute leukemia.

Background: Lower extremity surgeries performed in elderly people usually have high prevalence of peri-operative medical problems related to anaesthesia. The overall objective of peri-operative care of geriatric population is to fast recovery from anaesthesia and avoid functional decline. Objective: To compare the peri-operative pulmonary status of combined spinal epidural anaesthesia (CSEA) and spinal anaesthesia (SA) in geriatric patients underwent lower extremity surgeries. Methods: This prospective comparative study was conducted at Department of Anaesthesia, Analgesia and Intensive Care Medicine, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh from July 2016 to June 2018. A total of 70 geriatric cases that underwent lower extremity surgeries were included in this study. Cases were randomly allocated into two groups;35 in Group A (CSEA) and 35 in Group B (SAB). The different outcome variables between the groups like-duration of anaesthesia, respiratory rates (RR), oxygen saturation (SpO2), end tidal CO2 (EtCO2), peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR), breath holding test (BHT), peri-operative side effects of anaesthesia and post-operative visual analogue score (VAS) were analyzed and compared by statistical tests. Results: The mean age, weight, BMI of Group A and Group B patients were not significantly different (p > 0.05). No significant differences were observed in duration of surgery, gender and ASA grade between the groups (p > 0.05). Mean duration of anaesthesia, mean time to achieve target level of sensory block and mean time to achieve complete motor block were significantly higher in Group A (p 2, PEFR and BHT of both groups were not significantly different (p > 0.05). Improved prediction of shear wave velocity for clastic sedimentary rocks using hybrid model with core data

Effects of loading rate and hydraulic residence time on anoxic sulfide biooxidation

The optimal operation conditions in an anoxic sulfide oxidizing (ASO) bioreactor were investigated. The maximal removal rates for sulfide and nitrate were found to be 4.18 kg/(m3·d) and 1.73 kg/(m3·d), respectively. The volumetrical volumetric loading rates (LRs) observed through decreasing hydraulic retention time (HRT) at fixed substrate concentration are higher than those by increasing substrate concentration at fixed HRT. The sulfide oxidation in ASO reactor was partially producing both sulfate and sulfur; but the amount of sulfate produced was approximately one third that of sulfur. The process was able to tolerate high sulfide concentration, as the sulfide removal percentage always remained near 99% when influent concentration was up to 580 mg/L. It tolerated relatively lower nitrate concentration because the removal percentage dropped to 85% when influent con- centration was increased above 110 mg/L. The process can tolerate shorter HRT but careful operation is needed. Nitrate conversion was more sensitive to HRT than sulfide conversion since the process performance deteriorated abruptly when HRT was decreased from 3.12 h to 2.88 h. In order to avoid nitrite accumulation in the reactor, the influent sulfide and nitrate concentrations should be kept at 280 mg/L and 67.5 mg/L respectively. Present biotechnology is useful for removing sulfides from sewers and crude oil.

Sensing and Uptake of Nitrogen in Rice Plant: A Molecular View

As a main feature of plant autotrophy, assimilation of inorganic nitrogen (N) is not only of fundamental interest to the crop, but also a crucial factor in crop productivity. N is the main plant mineral nutrient needed for chlorophyll production and other plant cell components (proteins, nucleic acids and amino acids). I highlighted the novel aspects of N responsive sensors, transporters and signaling molecules recently identified in the monocot rice plant, and discussed their potential roles in N sensing and transporting. Furthermore, over the last couple of years, N sensing has been shown to be affected by different external factors, which act as local signals to trigger systemic signaling coordinated by long-distance transport or mobile signals in plant body. Understanding of this complex regulatory network provides a foundation mechanism for the development of novel strategies to increase the acquisition and transportation efficiency of nitrogen under varying N conditions for rice production.

Magnetic Field of a Compact Spherical Star under f(R,T) Gravity

We present the interior solutions of distributions of magnetized fluid inside a sphere in f（R, T） gravity. Tile magnetized sphere is embedded in an exterior Reissner NordstrOm metric. We assume that all physical quantities are in static equilibrium. The perfect fluid matter is studied under a particular form of the Lagrangian density f（R, T）. The magnetic field profile in modified gravity is calculated. Observational data of neutron stars are used to plot suitable models of magnetized compact objects. We reveal the effect of f（R, T） gravity on the magnetic field profile, with application to neutron stars, especially highly magnetized neutron stars found in x-ray pulsar systems. Finally, the effective potential Veff and innermost stable circular orbits, arising out of the motion of a test particle of negligible mass influenced by attraction or repulsion from the massive center, are discussed.

Morphology and microstructure characterization of 95W-3.5Ni-1.5Fe powder prepared by mechanical alloying

The mechanism of mechanical solid-state reactions for formation of tungsten heavy alloy powder was discussed. A highenergy ball mill operating at room temperature was used for preparing tungsten heavy alloy powders, starting from elemental tungsten （W）, nickel （Ni）, and iron （Fe） powders. X-ray diffraction （XRD）, particle size analyzer, scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, and transmission electron microscopy （TEM） were used to follow the progress of the mechanical solid-state reaction of W, Ni, and Fe powders. These morphological studies revealed three stages in the milling process. In the first stage, the particle deformation changes the irregular structure of the as-received powder particles to flattened morphology, and the average particle size increases. In the second stage, the powder is sufficiently deformed and the tendency to fracture predominates over welding, and the particle size decreases. With continuous milling, the system reaches steady state, and relatively small and uniform particle size distribution is obtained after 20 h of milling.
