The current status of hormone treatment for prostate cancer patients in Korean real-world practice:a multi-institutional observational study

We aimed to evaluate the current nationwide trend,efficacy,safety,and quality of life(QoL)profiles of hormone treatment in real-world practice settings for prostate cancer(PCa)patients in Korea.A total of 292 men with any biopsy-proven PCa(TanyNanyMany)from 12 institutions in Korea were included in this multi-institutional,observational study of prospectively collected data.All luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone(LHRH)agonists were allowed to be investigational drugs.Efficacy was defined as(1)the rate of castration(serum testosterone≤50 ng dl^-1)at 4-week visit and(2)breakthrough(serum testosterone>50 ng dl^-1 after castration).Safety assessments included routine examinations for potential adverse events,laboratory tests,blood pressure,body weight,and bone min era I density(BMD,at baseli ne and at the last follow-up visit).QoL was assessed using the Expa nded Prostate Cancer Index Composite-26(EPIC-26).The most comm on initial therapeutic regimen was LHRH agonist with an ti-androge n(78.0%),and the most commonly used LHRH agonist for combination and mono therapy was leuprolide(64.0%for combi natio n and 58.0%for monotherapy).The castration and breakthrough rates were 78.4%and 6.6%,respectively.The laboratory results related to dyslipidemia worsened after 4 weeks of hormone treatment.In addition,the mean BMD T-score was significantly lower at the last follow-up(mean:-1.950)compared to baseline(mean:-0.195).The mean total EPIC-26 score decreased from 84.8(standard deviation[s.d.]:12.2)to 78.3(s.d.:8.1),with significant deterioration only in the urinary domain(mean:23.5 at baseli ne and 21.9 at the 4-week visit).These findi ngs dem on strate the n ationwide trend of current practice setti ngs in hormone treatment for PCa in Korea.

Application of automated cone penetrometer for railway investigation using correlations with DCPI and deflection modulus

Portable in-situ devices have been used for characterizing low accessible field,such as the railway subgrade.In this study,the automated cone penetrometer(ACP)was designed for the application on the railway subgrade.ACP is composed of the cone tip,driving rod,and hydraulic hammer system.The hydraulic motor lifts and drops the 294.3 N hammer from a height of 200 mm such that the potential energy of 58.9 N m impacts the driving rod.The N-value(NACP)from the ACP test was compared with the dynamic cone penetration index(DCPI)from the dynamic cone penetrometer(DCP)test.The test results show that the NACP and DCPI profiles show opposite trend owing to the inverse concept of the unit.From the correlation of DCPI and NACP,the limitation of DCPI reveals owing the minimum manually measured value of 1 mm/blow.Additionally,the evaluation of the deflection modulus(EFWD)using NACP is more efficient than that using DCPI.Based on the result of this study,we suggest that ACP can be used for strength and stiffness evaluation of railway subgrade rapidly and reliably.

Three-dimensional （3D） acquisition has been the most important technique for augmented reality or virtual reality industries. Stereo vision can obtain 3D infor- mation of objects using disparity between two images captured by a stereo camera. However, due to lack of per- spectives for 3D objects in this technique, accurate 3D information may not be generated and the number of viewing points is limited. By contrast, multi-view or super multi-view imaging techniques can obtain more accurate 3D information because they use multiple cameras for pickup of 3D objects so that more perspec- tives and viewing points of 3D objects can be recorded.

Diatoms are a globally successful and eukaryotic photosynthetic organism with an ornamented silica external wall.The relationship between their valve morphology and habitat means that diatoms can be used as bioindicators to characterize the aquatic environment.To estimate the differential distribution and diversity of diatom assemblages along the coastal line,we collected phytoplankton samples from 114 coastal sites of waters of R.O.Korea.We applied the unweighted pair-group technique using the arithmetic averages clustering method to cluster the sampling sites,apart from those where the biota consisted of other groups,such as dinoflagellates,into four regions:the Yellow Sea,South Sea,southern East Sea,and northern East Sea.Indicator species analysis in each region led to the selection of tychoplanktonic,chain-forming,attached species to substrates and psychrophilic indicator diatoms,respectively,each of which represented a planktonic lifestyle associated with one of the four regions.This study shows the diatom assemblages to serve as bioindicators of Korean coastal water in winter,and the subsequent seasonal survey will provide a starting point for the improved understanding of Korean diatom-based ecoregions,in both time and space.

Effect of Temperature and Gamma-Ray Irradiation on Optical Characteristics of Fiber Bragg Grating Inscribed Radiation-Resistant Optical Fiber

A new radiation-hard germano-silicate glass optical fiber with a pure silica glass buffer and a boron-doped silica glass inner cladding was fabricated for temperature sensor application based on the fiber Bragg grating(FBG)underg-ray irradiation environment.The temperature dependences of optical attenuation at 1550.5 nm and Bragg reflection wavelength shift from 18℃to 40℃before theγ-ray irradiation were about 4.57´10^(-4)dB/℃and 5.48 pm/℃,respectively.The radiation-induced optical attenuation at 1550.5 nm and the radiation-induced Bragg reflection wavelength shift under theγ-ray irradiation with the total dose of 22.85 kGy at 35℃were about 0.03 dB/m and 0.12 nm,respectively,with theγ-ray irradiation sensitivity of 5.25´10^(-3)pm/Gy.The temperature and theγ-ray irradiation dependence of optical attenuation at 1550.5 nm in the FBG written fiber with boron-doped silica glass inner cladding were about 6 times and 4 times lower than that in the FBG written fiber without boron-doped silica glass inner cladding under a temperature change from 18℃to 40℃and theγ-ray irradiation with the total dose of 22.85 kGy at 35℃,respectively.Furthermore,the effect of temperature increase on the Bragg reflection wavelength of the FBG written fiber with boron-doped silica inner cladding was much larger about 1000 times than that of theγ-ray irradiation.However,no influence on the reflection power of the Bragg wavelengths and the full width at half maximum(FWHM)bandwidth under temperature and theγ-ray irradiation change was found.Also,after theγ-ray irradiation with the dose of 22.85 kGy,no significant change in the refractive index was found but the residual stresses developed in the fiber were slightly relaxed or retained.

Application of a nondestructive method to evaluate the active layer in a cold region

To provide a safe transportation system in an extremely cold region,evaluation needs to be conducted of the thickness and the volumetric water content of the active layer,as they significantly affect frost heave.The objective of this study was to evaluate the dielectric constant(κ)of the active layer using ground-penetrating radar(GPR)and a dynamic cone penetrometer(DCP);this evaluation was then used to estimate the thickness and the volumetric water content of the active layer.A field located in midwest Alaska was selected as the study site.A GPR survey and two DCP tests were conducted on the surface of the ground,and the ground temperature was measured.From the GPR survey,travel times of the electromagnetic wave in the active layer were obtained.In addition,the thickness of the active layer was determined by using the dynamic cone penetration index(DCPI)and ground temperature.By using the travel time and travel distance of the electromagnetic wave in the active layer,dielectric constants were calculated as 26.3 and 26.4 for two DCP points.From the mean dielectric constant,the volumetric water content was estimated to be 40%~43%,and the thickness of the active layer was evaluated along the GPR survey line.The spatial-scaled GPR image showed that the thickness of the active layer varied from 520 mm to 700 mm due to the presence of a puddle,which accelerated the heat exchange.The results show that evaluation of the dielectric constant using the GPR survey and the DCP test can be effectively used to estimate the thickness and the volumetric water content of the active layer.

Novel predictors for lymph node metastasis in submucosal invasive colorectal carcinoma

AIM To evaluate a novel grading system to predict lymph node metastasis(LNM) in patients with submucosal invasive colorectal carcinoma(SICRC).METHODS We analyzed the associations between LNM and various clinicopathological features in 252 patients with SICRC who had undergone radical surgery at the Seoul Saint Mary's hospital between 2000 and 2015.RESULTS LNM was observed in 31 patients(12.3%). The depth and width of the submucosal invasion, lymphatic invasion, tumor budding, and the presence of poorly differentiated clusters(PDCs) were significantly associated with the incidence of LNM. Using multivariate analysis, the receiver operating characteristic curvewas calculated and the area under curve(AUC) was used to compare the ability of the different parameters to identify the risk of LNM. The most powerful clinicopathological parameter for predicting LNM was lymphatic invasion(difference AUC = 0.204), followed by the presence or absence of tumor budding(difference AUC = 0.190), presence of PDCs(difference AUC = 0.172) and tumor budding graded by the Ueno method(difference AUC = 0.128). CONCLUSION Our results indicate that the tumor budding and the depth multiplied by the width measurements of submucosal invasion can provide important information for patients with SICRC.

Agmatine reduces nitric oxide synthase expression and peroxynitrite formation in the cerebral cortex in a rat model of transient global cerebral ischemia

Agmatine, an analog of L-arginine, is an endogenous substance synthesized by arginine decarboxylase, which has been shown to possess neuroprotective effects following brain ischemia. Nitric oxide is generated by sequential oxidation of the guanidinium group in L-arginine, and agmatine might protect the brain from ischemic injury by interfering with nitric oxide signaling. This study investigated the effects of agmatine on cerebral cortex neuronal injury following transient global cerebral ischemia and also detected nitric oxide synthase expression and peroxynitrite formation. Results demonstrated that intraperitoneal injection of agmatine in global cerebral ischemia/reperfusion alleviated ischemia/reperfusion-induced cerebral cortical cortex neuronal injury and cellular apoptosis, decreased neuronal and inducible nitric oxide synthase expression at 24, 48, and 72 hours following global cerebral ischemia and reperfusion, and greatly inhibited nitrotyrosine levels, which reflect the amount of peroxynitrite formed. These findings indicated that agmatine alleviates cerebral cortex neuronal injury following global cerebral ischemia and decreases nitric oxide synthase expression and peroxynitrite formation following ischemia/repeffusion.

Superelastic metastable Ti-Mo-Sn alloys with high elastic admissible strain for potential bio-implant applications

The demand for titanium alloys simultaneously having high elastic admissible strain and large recovery strain for bio-implant applications is increasing.Ni-free Ti-based shape memory alloys are promising candidates for obtaining the required multifunctional properties.In this study,a wide content range of(0-15)wt%of low-cost,toxicity-free,and high-biocompatible Sn element was added to the Ti-8Mo(wt%)alloy to study its effect on the superelastic recovery and mechanical properties of biomedical Ti-Mo-Sn alloys.By tailoring Sn content,desired multifunctional properties of high elastic admissible strain and room temperature superelasticity were achieved in the studied Ti-Mo-Sn alloys.It was found that the increase in Sn content stabilized theβphase and a singleβphase was obtained at room temperature in Ti-8Mo-(13,15)Sn alloys.The addition of Sn modified the lattice parameters of theα″martensite andβphase and affected the lattice deformation stain ofβ→α″.The lattice deformation strain along the[011]βdirection was found to be decreased by-0.26%/wt%Sn.The room temperature superelasticity with a recovery strain of 3.1%and an elastic admissible strain of 1%was obtained in the Ti-8Mo-13Sn alloy.As Sn content increased to 15 wt%,a high elastic admissible strain of 1.56%and a recovery strain of 2.0%were obtained.These Ti-Mo-Sn alloys with excellent multifunctional properties are promising candidates for bio-implant applications.

Rice false smut is an emerging plant disease worldwide.Ustiloxin A(UstA)is the major mycotoxin found in rice false smut balls,which are fungal colonies in rice florets.In this study,a new method consisting of macroporous resin column chromatography and high-speed countercurrent chromatography(HSCCC)was developed for UstA separation.UstA was extracted by a 3.81%HCOOH solution and adsorbed by XAD-4 resin.UstA was then eluted by a 40%methanol solution supplemented with 0.1%trifluoroacetic acid(TFA).Further purification was achieved by HSCCC using a two-phase solvent system consisting of n-butanol/TFA/H_(2)O(1/0.05/1,v/v/v).Under the optimized conditions,225 mg of UstA was obtained with a purity of 97.39%in a single run,with a final recovery of 65.2%.An inhibitory effect on seed germination of wheat and maize caused by UstA was observed in a preliminary phytotoxicity assay.
