Clinical course of ulcerative colitis patients who develop acute pancreatitis

To investigate the clinical course of ulcerative colitis (UC) patients who develop acute *** analyzed 3307 UC patients from the inflammatory bowel disease registry at Asan Medical Center from June 1989 to May 2015. The clinical course of UC patients who developed acute pancreatitis was compared with that of non-pancreatitis UC *** 51 patients who developed acute pancreatitis, 13 (0.40%) had autoimmune, 10 (0.30%) had aminosalicylate-induced, and 13 (1.73%) had thiopurine-induced pancreatitis. All 13 patients with autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) had type 2 AIP. Two (15.4%) patients had pre-existing AIP, and three (23.1%) patients developed AIP and UC simultaneously. Compared to non-pancreatitis patients, AIP patients had UC diagnosed at a significantly younger age (median, 22.9 years vs 36.4 years; P = 0.001). AIP and aminosalicylate-induced pancreatitis patients had more extensive UC compared to non-pancreatitis patients. All patients with pancreatitis recovered uneventfully, and there were no recurrences. Biologics were used more frequently in aminosalicylate- and thiopurine-induced pancreatitis patients compared to non-pancreatitis patients [adjusted OR (95%CI), 5.16 (1.42-18.67) and 6.90 (1.83-25.98), respectively]. Biologic utilization rate was similar among AIP and non-pancreatitis patients [OR (95%CI), 0.84 (0.11-6.66)]. Colectomy rates for autoimmune, aminosalicylate-induced, and thiopurine-induced pancreatitis, and for non-pancreatitis patients were 15.4% (2/13), 20% (2/10), 15.4% (2/13), and 7.3% (239/3256), respectively; the rates were not significantly different after adjusting for baseline disease *** patients show a non-significant increase in colectomy, after adjusting for baseline disease extent.

Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis occurs very rarely in patients with pancreatic *** is characterized by multifocal seeding of the leptomeninges by malignant cells that originate from a solid *** the best of our knowledge,brain metastasis from pancreatic cancer is extremely *** carcinomatosis is estimated to occur in 3% to 8% of cases of solid *** clinical manifestation usually involves neurological symptoms,including dizziness,headache,vomiting,nausea,and hemiparesis,symptoms similar to those of meningitis or brain *** methods for leptomeningeal carcinomatosis include brain magnetic resonance imaging and cerebrospinal fluid ***,we describe a case of leptomeningeal carcinomatosis in which the primary tumor was later determined to be pancreatic *** magnetic resonance imaging findings showed mild enhancement of the leptomeninges,and cerebrospinal fluid cytology was negative at ***,after repeated spinal taps,atypical cells were observed on cerebrospinal fluid analysis and levels of tumor markers such as carbohydrate antigen 19-9 in cerebrospinal fluid were *** computed tomography,performed to determine the presence of extracerebral tumors,revealed pancreatic *** cancer was confirmed histopathologically on examination of an endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration specimen.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with coronary artery disease in Koreans

AIM:To investigate whether nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)affects coronary artery disease(CAD)and identify candidate ***:Patients who underwent coronary angiography were consecutively *** patients were classified into four groups by coronary artery stenosis:A,insignificant;B,one-vessel disease;C,two-vessel disease;and D,three-vessel *** ultrasonography was performed to determine the presence of a fatty liver and categorize by grade:0,no evidence;1,mild;2,moderate;and 3,*** measured not only known CAD risk factors,but also serum insulin,HOMA-index,adiponectin,interleukin-6,tumor necrosis factor-αand high-sensitivity C-reactive protein ***:Of the 134 patients who met the inclusion criteria,82(61.2%)had ultrasonographically diagnosed *** the 46 patients with CAD,37(80.4%)had evidence of a fatty *** two groups(A vs B-D)were significantly different in terms of age,total cholesterol,triglycerides,low-density lipoprotein levels and fatty *** artery stenosis was strongly associated with fatty liver in a grade-dependent manner(P=0.025).In binary logistic regression,NAFLD was a significant independent predictor of CAD(P=0.03,OR=1.685;95%CI:1.051-2.702).Among the candidate mediators,the serum adiponectin level showed a trend toward lowering based on CAD progression(P=0.071).CONCLUSION:NAFLD is an independent risk factor for CAD in a grade-dependent ***,adiponectin might be related to the pathogenesis of NAFLD.

A sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) is being developed at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). As in-core structural material for a SFR, advanced radiation resistant ODS steel (ARROS) has been developed. This paper summarizes the current status of ARROS development regarding an ODS steel composition, fabrication technology of ODS steel structural components and key joining technologies of ODS steel structural components.

Comparison of sequential and 7-,10-,14-d triple therapy for Helicobacter pylori infection

AIM:To compare the effectiveness of sequential therapy for Helicobacter pylori(***) infection with that of triple therapy of varying ***:The 460 patients enrolled in this study had ***-associated gastritis or a gastric or duodenal *** screening,***-infected patients were randomly assigned to receive either conventional triple therapy for 7,10 or 14 d,or a new 10-d sequential *** of the 4 treatment groups included 115 *** outcomes of eradication therapy were assessed 4 wk after treatment by the urea breath test and ***:The overall eradication rate was 81.0%,and eradication rates were 75.7% for 7-d conventional triple therapy,81.9% for 10-d conventional triple therapy,84.4% for 14-d conventional triple therapy,and 82.0% for 10-d sequential *** intention-to-treat analysis nor per protocol analysis showed significant differences in eradication rates using sequential therapy or the standard triple therapy(P = 0.416 and P = 0.405,respectively).CONCLUSION:There are no significant differences between 10-d sequential eradication therapy for *** and any duration of standard triple treatment in Korean patients.

This paper presents the characteristic of newly developed electrical steel and motor performance analysis for HEV/EV. This material is developed and optimized for high frequency operation to reduce the core losses in traction motors to increase fuel efficiency. Four types of electrical steels are introduced, which are optimized for high flux density（PNHF）, high frequency low core loss（PNF）, high punchability（PNSF） and high strength（PNT） to meet different specifications from different types of traction motors. Moreover, new products are being under development in response to various customers’ requirement.

BACKGROUND Various treatment methods are available for the treatment of pancreatic arteriovenous malformation(P-AVM);however,there are no established treatment options for asymptomatic *** SUMMARY A 47-year-old and a 50-year-old male patients sought treatment for P-AVM in the pancreas,which was incidentally detected during routine abdominal computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging conducted as part of a health *** underwent transcatheter arterial embolization(tae),and over the course of a 9-year follow-up period,the AVM did not worsen and was *** tae can be considered as an alternative treatment option for P-AVM in selective cases where patients are asymptomatic or have a high surgical risk.

Presumptive case of sparganosis manifesting as a hepatic mass: A case report and literature review

A 60-year-old man was admitted due to rectosigmoid colon cancer, and a hepatic mass was incidentally found during the staging work-up. The mass appeared cystic with a thick wall and contained multiple bizarre cord-like structures on ultrasound, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. The differential diagnoses included organizing abscess/hematoma, foreign body granuloma and parasite infestation. Serologic study revealed anti-sparganum antibodies. Over 4-year followup, the patient did not complain of symptoms, and no changes in the characteristics of the liver mass were observed. Hepatic sparganosis is rare; only two cases have been clinically reported, and no detailed radiologic description was available until now. This case report presents a detailed radiologic description of a hepatic mass that could most likely represent hepatic sparganosis.

Differences of Heart Rate Variability during Sevoflurane Anesthesia in Children by Age

Background: The child’s central nervous system develops with aging, and heart rate variability (HRV), which is con-trolled by the brain, differs from that of adults. We investigated changes in HRV during sevoflurane anesthesia in children. Methods: One 138 children aged from 2 - 12 years without major underlying problems were enrolled. During maintenance with 2 - 2.5 vol% sevoflurane anesthesia, electrocardiographic data were obtained and power spectral analysis, approximate entropy (ApEn) or Hurst exponent were analyzed and compared in three groups (age 2 - 5 years, 6 - 9 and 10 - 12 years of age). Results: The RR interval increased with aging, but low-frequency powers did not. High- frequency power was greater in the oldest children (P < 0.05), while ApEn and Hurst exponents were lower (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Change in HRV is one of the characteristics of development in children.
