Percutaneous ablation for perivascular hepatocellular carcinoma: Refining the current status based on emerging evidence and future perspectives

Various therapeutic modalities including radiofrequency ablation, cryoablation, microwave ablation, and irreversible electroporation have attracted attention as energy sources for effective locoregional treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC); these are accepted non-surgical treatments that provide excellent local tumor control and favorable survival. However, in contrast to surgery, tumor location is a crucial factor in the outcomes of locoregional treatment because such treatment is mainly performed using a percutaneous approach for minimal invasiveness; accordingly, it has a limited range of ablation volume. When the index tumor is near large blood vessels, the blood flow drags thermal energy away from the targeted tissue, resulting in reduced ablation volume through a socalled "heat-sink effect". This modifies the size and shape of the ablation zone considerably. In addition, serious complications including infarction or aggressive tumor recurrence can be observed during follow-up after ablation for perivascular tumors by mechanical or thermal damage. Therefore, perivascular locations of HCC adjacent to large intrahepatic vessels can affect post-treatment outcomes. In this review, we primarily focus on physical properties of perivascular tumor location, characteristics of perivascular HCC,potential complications, and clinical outcomes after various locoregional treatments; moreover, we discuss the current status and future perspectives regarding percutaneous ablation for perivascular HCC.

Chondrogenesis of periodontal ligament stem cells by transforming growth factor-β3 and bone morphogenetic protein-6 in a normal healthy impacted third molar

The periodontal ligament-derived mesenchymal stem cell is regarded as a source of adult stem cells due to its ***, the proof of chondrogenic potential of the cells is ***,we investigated the chondrogenic differentiation capacity of periodontal ligament derived mesenchymal stem cells induced by transforming growth factor(TGF)-p3 and bone morphogenetic protein(BMP)-*** isolation of periodontal ligament stem cells(PDLSCs) from human periodontal ligament,the cells were cultured in Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium(DMEM) with 20%fetal bovine serum(FBS).A mechanical force initiated chondrogenic differentiation of the *** chondrogenic differentiation,10μg·LTGF-β3 or 100μg·LBMP-6 and the combination treating group for synergistic effect of the growth *** analyzed the PDLSCs by fluorescence-activated cell sorting and chondrogenesis were evaluated by glycosaminoglycans assay,histology,immunohistochemistry and genetic *** showed mesenchymal stem cell properties proved by FACS *** contents were increased 217%by TGF-β3 and 220%by BMP-6. The synergetic effect of TGF-β3 and BMP-6 were shown up to 281%compared to *** combination treatment increased Sox9, aggrecan and collagen II expression compared with not only controls,but also TGF-P3 or BMP-6 single treatment *** histological analysis also indicated the chondrogenic differentiation of PDLSCs in our *** results of the present study demonstrate the potential of the dental stem cell as a valuable cell source for chondrogenesis,which may be applicable for regeneration of cartilage and bone fracture in the field of cell therapy.

Fish stocking is a common practice for restocking wild populations of fishes,and the growth conditions of hatchery-raised fishes are a major key for successful ***,there are few studies that compare the growth of hatchery-reared juvenile fishes with wild *** compared the growth conditions of hatchery flounders,Paralichthys olivaceus,at two fish farms in Korea with that of natural *** of the relationships of growth parameters including total length-weight,otolith-total length,and weight/length ratio relative to otolith length indicated that the growth was similar between the wild and the reared fishes at the two fish *** results suggest that the fishes grown at farming facilities should have a similar probability of recruitment as wild juveniles.

The aim of this study is to propose a new detection method for determining the damage locations in pile foundations based on deep learning using acoustic emission ***,the damage location is simulated using a back propagation neural network deep learning model with an acoustic emission data set acquired from pile hit *** particular,the damage location is identified using two parameters:the pile location(PL)and the distance from the pile cap(DS).This study investigates the influences of various acoustic emission parameters,numbers of sensors,sensor installation locations,and the time difference on the prediction accuracy of PL and *** addition,correlations between the damage location and acoustic emission parameters are ***,the damage step condition is determined using a classification model with an acoustic emission data set acquired from uniaxial compressive strength ***,a new damage detection and evaluation method for pile foundations is *** new method is capable of continuously detecting and evaluating the damage of pile foundations in service.

Bedside index for severity in acute pancreatitis:comparison with other scoring systems in predicting severity and organ failure

BACKGROUND:The early identification of severe acute pancreatitis is important for the management and for improving *** bedside index for severity in acute pancreatitis(BISAP)has been considered as an accurate method for risk stratification in patients with acute *** study aimed to evaluate the comparative usefulness of the ***:We retrospectively analyzed 303 patients with acute pancreatitis diagnosed at our hospital from March 2007to December ***,APACHE-II,Ranson criteria,and CT severity index(CTSI)of all patients were *** stratified the number of patiants with severe pancreatitis,pancreatic necrosis,and organ failure as well as the number of deaths by BISAP *** used the area under the receiveroperating curve(AUC)to compare BISAP with other scoring systems,C-reactive protein(CRP),hematocrit,and body mass index(BMI)with regard to prediction of severe acute pancreatitis,necrosis,organ failure,and ***:Of the 303 patiants,31(10.2%)were classified as having severe acute *** failure occurred in 23(7.6%)patients,pancreatic necrosis in 40(13.2%),and death in6(2.0%).A BISAP score of 2 was a statistically significant cutoff value for the diagnosis of severe acute pancreatitis,organ failure,and *** for BISAP predicting severe pancreatitis and death were 0.80 and 0.86,respectively,which were similar to those for APACHE-II(0.80,0.87)and Ranson criteria(0.74,0.74)and greater than AUCs for CTSI(0.67,0.42).The AUC for organ failure predicted by BISAP,APACHE-II,Ranson criteria,and CTSI was 0.93,0.95,0.84 and 0.57,*** for BISAP predicting severity,organ failure,and death were greater than those for CRP(0.69,0.80,0.72),hematocrit(0.45,0.35,0.14),and BMI(0.41,0.47,0.17).CONCLUSION:The BISAP predicts severity,death,and especially organ failure in acute pancreatitis as well as APACHE-II does and better than Ranson criteria,CTSI,CRP,hematocrit,and BMI.

Velocity Profiles between Two Baffles in a Horizontal Circular Tube

The shell and tube heat exchanger is an essential part of a power plant for recovering heat transfer between the feed water of a boiler and the wasted *** baffles are also an important element inside the heat *** materials influence the flow pattern in the *** influence of baffles in the velocity profiles was observed using a three-dimensional particle image velocimetry around baffles in a horizontal circular *** velocity of the particles was measured before the baffle and between them in the test *** show that the flows near the front baffle flow were parallel to the vertical wall,and then concentrate on the upper opening of the front *** flows circulate in the front and rear *** flow profiles are related to the Reynolds number(Re) or the flow *** velocity profiles at lower Re number showed a complicated mixing,concentrating on the lower opening of the rear baffle as front *** flow was employed in this study,which was produced using tangential velocities at the *** the entrance of the front baffle,the velocity vector profiles with swirl were much different from that without ***,velocities between two baffles are not much different from those without swirl.

The electrical characteristics of graphene Schottky contacts formed on undoped GaN semiconductors were investigated. Excellent rectifying behavior with a rectification ratio of -10^7 at ±2 V and a low reverse leakage current of 1.0 × 10^-8 A/cm^2 at -5 V were observed. The Schottky barrier heights, as determined by the thermionic emission model Richardson plots, and barrier inhomogeneity model, were 0.90, 0.72, and 1.24 ± 0.13 eV, respectively. Despite the predicted low barrier height of -0.4 eV at the graphene-GaN interface, the formation of excellent rectifying characteristics with much larger barrier heights is attributed to the presence of a large number of surface states （1.2 x 1013 states/cm2/eV） and the internal spontaneous polarization field of GaN, resulted in a significant upward surface band bending or a bare surface barrier height as high as of 2.9 eV. Using the S parameter of 0.48 （measured from the work function dependence of Schottky barrier height） and the mean barrier height of 1.24 eV, the work function of graphene in the Au/graphene/GaN stack could be approximately estimated to be as low as 3.5 eV. The obtained results indicate that graphene is a promising candidate for use as a Schottky rectifier in GaN semiconductors with n-type conductivity.

Study on the current structure of the thermohaline front in the southeastern entrance of the Yellow Sea during winter

A thermohaline front is located at the southeastern entrance of the Yellow Sea in winter, and it is generated by the intrusion of warm saline water into the Yellow Sea caused by a strong northerly wind. Recently, a westward transversal current traveling away from the west coast of Korea toward the open sea area along the front was reported. The westward transversal current is dominant in the surface layer during the temperature inversion period. The formation and structure of this current are examined using a numerical vertical ocean-slice *** two different water masses meet, a front is formed and adjusted geostrophically. In this frontal zone, a horizontal pressure gradient flow by the vertically inclined isopycnal occurs under the thermal wind process in a baroclinic effect, and the cold fresh coastal water moves westward along the front in the upper layer. The barotropic effect across the front and the bottom friction effect strengthen the westward component of the velocity. The velocity of the bottom layer decreases remarkably in the increase of the bottom drag coefficient. This means that the bottom friction with the strong background tidal current causes a reduction in the current in the bottom layer.

Review　of　the　Researches　on　Changma　and　Future　Observational　Study(KORMEX)

Changma is the most important supplier of water resource in Korea. However, its interannual variation may cause either floods or droughts time to time in many regions of Korea. A number of studies on Changma have been done in many subjects, such as the on-set and retreat timing, duration of Changma, and its interannual variation, which may cause either wet or dry Changma, and the heavy rainfall phenomena associated with the Changma front. Also, the subjects covered the dynamical situation of Changma compared to that of Baiu and Mei-yu as a part of East Asian monsoon circulation, and relation between Changma and tropical Pacific sea-surface temperature (SST) through atmosphere-ocean interaction, etc. A numerical study is presented in this paper to check the teleconnection between the behavior of Changma front and the variation of tropical Pacific SST. The difference in the lower level streamfunction between theEl Nio event of 1987 and the La Nia event of 1988 illustrates that the cross-equatorial and westerly wind crossing over the India and Indo-China peninsula were weak during the summer of 1988 compared to 1987. This may cause the drought of 1988 in East Asia by reducing moisture supply from the Indian Ocean and the south-western Pacific. Even though there are numerous research activities on the Changma, our knowledge on the Changma is still limited to explain the mechanism of interannual variation of Changma and to provide a proper prediction of precipitation due to both geographical location of Korea and its complex topography. In collaboration with the international field observational projects, such as GAME and SCSMEX, the Korea Monsoon Experiment (KORMEX) has been planned by several scientists in Korea to improve our knowledge on the atmospheric circulation and water cycle related to the East Asian monsoon and to provide necessary information to predict both short- and long-term variation of rainfall during the Changma season.
