Metabolomic and elemental profiling of blood serum in bladder cancer

Bladder cancer(BC)is one of the most frequently diagnosed types of urinary cancer.Despite advances in treatment methods,no specific biomarkers are currently in use.Targeted and untargeted profiling of metabolites and elements of human blood serum from 100 BC patients and the same number of normal controls(NCs),with external validation,was attempted using three analytical methods,i.e.,nuclear magnetic resonance,gold and silver-109 nanoparticle-based laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry(LDI-MS),and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry(ICP-OES).All results were subjected to multivariate statistical analysis.Four potential serum biomarkers of BC,namely,isobutyrate,pyroglutamate,choline,and acetate,were quantified with proton nuclear magnetic resonance,which had excellent predictive ability as judged by the area under the curve(AUC)value of 0.999.Two elements,Li and Fe,were also found to distinguish between cancer and control samples,as judged from ICP-OES data and AUC of 0.807(in validation set).Twenty-five putatively identified compounds,mostly related to glycans and lipids,differentiated BC from NCs,as detected using LDI-MS.Five serum metabolites were found to discriminate between tumor grades and nine metabolites between tumor stages.The results from three different analytical platforms demonstrate that the identified distinct serum metabolites and metal elements have potential to be used for noninvasive detection,staging,and grading of BC.

Discussion on “Impact of orientation of blast initiation on ground vibrations” [J Rock Mech Geotech Eng 15 (2022) 255e261]

Recently,Garai et al.(2022)published a paper on the impact of orientation of blast initiation on ground vibrations.However,some of the claims are not supported by the results of the given tests.In Fig.1(see Fig.8 in Garai et al.,2022),there are contours of measured vibration velocities in 4 directions(every 90?)and an incorrect interpretation between them.By placing all measured vibration velocity values(Gerai et al.,2022)at well-defined points on a single figure,it was not possible to precisely determine the type of vibration velocity,such as radial,tangential and vertical vibration velocities,with their different shapes.An incorrect conclusion was also drawn about the direction of the highest vibration velocity.The paper by Garai et al.(2022)measured the vibrational velocity of the medium through which the seismic wave passed,but used the incorrect term shock wave.The shock wave would have destroyed the seismic measuring instruments.A superposition of the vibrational velocity was considered,but not combined with the vibrational frequency of the seismic wave.This paper presents a method for selecting the time delay between successively initiated explosive charges to the measured frequency of the seismic wave,so that the direction of initiation of the explosive charges does not affect the vibration velocity of the ground through which the seismic wave passes.The theoretical and measured shapes and waveforms of radial velocity and tangential velocity in an opencast lignite mine are then presented.Moreover,the conditions for the formation of shock wave,transition wave and seismic waves are presented.

Extensive Air Showers(EAS)induced by cosmic ray particles of very low energies,owing to the significantly steep cosmic ray energy spectrum,dominate the secondary particle flux measured by single detectors and small shower arrays.Such arrays connected in extended networks can be used to determine potentially interesting spatial correlations between showers,which may shed new light on the nature of ultra high-energy cosmic rays.The quantitative interpretation of showers recorded by small local arrays requires a methodology that differs from that used by ordinary large EAS arrays operating in the"knee"region and above.We present"small EAS generator,"a semi-analytical method for integrating cosmic ray spectra over energies of interest and summing over the mass spectra of primary nuclei in arbitrary detector configurations.Furthermore,we provide results on the EAS electron and muon fluxes and particle density spectra.

Topography of spinal column and kidney receptors as illustrated by microsystem of the foot

OBJECTIVE:To test the accuracy of the distribution of reflective zones on the feet as proposed by William Fitzgerald using the spine and kidney receptors as reference points.METHODS:Spine and feet lengths were measured first along straight lines and then again,taking into consideration the anatomical curves.The spinal column was further measured with regard to its individual regions(cervical,thoracic,lumbar,sacrum-coccyx).Straight-line measurements were taken with the help of an anthropometer.Measurements that took into account all of the curves were performed with the opisometer(also known as a "map measurer").All the measurements were accurate to within 1 mm.The study subjects were a healthy,physically fit 16-year-old female student and a 53-year-old male office employee exposed to an average dose of physical exercise.RESULTS:The kidney receptor in the foot did not reflect onto the predetermined lumbar section of the spinal column as measured along the straight line or with regard to curves.Instead,in both subjects the kidney receptor reflected onto the thoracic spine.CONCLUSION:Te particular level of the spinal cord that innervates the given organ controls the distribution of receptors of individual organs in the foot.

In this paper, both Fritz John and Karush-Kuhn-Tucker necessary optimality conditions are established for a （weakly） LU-efficient solution in the considered nonsmooth multiobjective programming problem with the multiple interval-objective function. Further, the sufficient optimality conditions for a （weakly） LU-efficient solution and several duality results in Mond-Weir sense are proved under assumptions that the functions constituting the considered nondifferentiable multiobjective programming problem with the multiple interval- objective function are convex.

The effect of learning on the evolution of new courtship behavior： A simulation model

The fact that individuals learn can change the relationship between genotype and phenotype in the population, and thus affect the evolutionary response to selection. Here we ask how male ability to learn from female response affects the evolution of a novel male behavioral courtship trait under pre-existing female preference (sensory drive). We assume a courtship trait which has both a genetic and a learned component, and a two-level female response to males. With individual-based simulations we show that, under this scenario, learning generally increases the strength of selection on the genetic component of the courtship trait, at least when the population genetic mean is still low. As a consequence, learning not only accelerates the evolution of the courtship trait, but also enables it when the trait is costly, which in the absence of learning results in an adaptive valley. Furthermore, learning can enable the evolution of the novel trait in the face of gene flow mediated by immigration of males that show superior attractiveness to females based on another, non-heritable trait. However, rather than increasing monotonically with the speed of learning, the effect of learning on evolution is maximized at intermediate learning rates. This model shows that, at least under some scenarios, the ability to learn can drive the evolution of mating behaviors through a process equivalent to Waddington's genetic assimilation.

The Influence of Carburizing Parameters on Carbon Transfer Coefficient

Definition of coefficient of carbon transfer in European Standard (EN 10052) is presented as: "Mass of carbon transferred from carburizing medium into the steel, per unit surface area per second for a unit difference between the carbon potential, and actual surface carbon content". In this paper, a model is presented of carbon transfer from endothermic atmospheres to carbon steel. The carbon transfer coefficient values were determined experimentally by the foil technique and on specimens, taking into account the following parameters: chemical composition of atmospheres, carbon potential, temperature and time of the carburizing process. Some examples of the variation of the carbon transfer coefficient for two steps of the carburizing process, including soaking before quenching, are given, based on results obtained. The effect of carbon transfer coefficient on carbon content at the steel surface is given.

An efficient FEM for pressure analysis of oil film in a piston pump

The paper concerns numerical analysis of pressure distribution of an oil film on the valve plate in the variable height gap of an axial piston pump. The analysis employs the finite element method. For determination of oil pressure variations in the gap, the Reynolds equation, commonly applied in the theory of lubrication, is applied. The equation is solved numerically with the use of self-developed program based on the finite element method. In order to obtain high accuracy of the results, an adaptive mesh refinement based on residual estimations of solution errors is applied. The calculation results are represented as dependent on the geometric and working parameters of the pump.

Foraminiferal micro-buildups(“reefs”)in the Wuchiapingian basin facies of the basal Zechstein carbonates in western Poland

Encrusting foraminifers locally can play an essential reef-forming role such as in the Carnian fossiliferous Hallstatt Limestones of Austria where a dense succession of hardgrounds occurs with numerous small buildups(up to 2 cm high)composed of sessile foraminifers.Similar foraminiferal micro-buildups occur in a 10-cm-thick bed in the basinal facies in the basal Zechstein(Upper Permian)strata in the Radlin 60 borehole,in western Poland.Foraminiferal micro-buildups of presumably columnar habit account for up to a half of the volume.The growth of columns was interrupted by hiatal surfaces,although usually the growth of columns was restored afterwards.In the upper part of the bed with foraminiferal micro-buildups,the foraminiferal encrustations become visibly less abundant,and in most cases,they have a shape of less regular masses.The bed with foraminiferal micro-buildups abounds in closely spaced discontinuity(hiatal)surfaces,occasionally encrusted by foraminifers.Tubular foraminifers in the bed with foraminiferal micro-buildups are accompanied by various encrusting organisms,possibly microbes;they are grouped under the name Palaeonubecularia.In the intercolumnar spaces,common Midiella sp.occur.During deposition,the conditions were mostly suboxic,and various types of ferruginous morphs,common in the lower part of the bed,suggest that dysoxic-anoxic interfaces produced various microaerophilic environments for iron-bacteria.The environmental conditions during the deposition of the upper part of the bed were very similar to those characterizing the starved basin environment in which the bioclastic-peloidal and oncoidal sediments in the Zechstein Limestone have been formed.In turn,the lower part of the bed registers the transition from normal(=not starved)marine conditions,with a clear chemocline,to the starved basin conditions.The deposition of the bed was coeval with the Kupferschiefer deposition based on the correlation ofδ13C curves,which implies that the previous stratigraphical concept of basal Zechstein strata h
