During the past five decades niobium has emerged as the most important microalloying element in high strength *** first theories to explain its role were presented in the seminal publications of Woodhead,Morrison and *** niobium microalloyed steels are unchallenged for their main *** examples include linepipe for gas transportation,automotive steels used in body-in-white and structural parts,shipbuilding,steel towers and steel structures in civil construction that exhibit better fire resistance and seismic load *** technology for steelmaking helped emphasize the superior overall properties that can be attained with the use of *** linepipe is the best example of cleaner steel with carbon levels below 0.05% manufactured *** niobium microalloyed steels present the optimal balance of strength,toughness,weldability and *** paper describes the evolution of the technology associated with niobium in microalloyed steels,technology that secured its status as the efficient solution to solving today’s challenges:safety,energy efficiency and environmental *** paper also presents evidence that enhances the case that there is a secure,stable,long-term supply of the ferroniobium used to manufacture these steels.

Effect of Processing and Composition on the Structure and Properties of P/M EP741NP Type Alloys

A study was carried out on the effects of processing and composition on the structure and properties of P/M EP741NP type alloys. The objectives of this study were to understand the role of Hf in a P/M superalloy containing high niobium used in aircraft engines and to determine the effects of extrusion and forging the powders as contrasted to HIPing （hot isostatic pressing） only. Two alloys of the P/M EP741NP composition were atomized： one alloy contained 0.26%Hfand the other was Hf free. After the as-atomized powders from both alloys were characterized, the powders were extruded into billets, forged and heat treated. After each process, the microstructures were characterized by SEM and the phases were extracted and identified by X-ray diffraction. The presence of Hf in the residues was probed by EDS （energy dispersive spectroscopy）. The alloys were given the published Russian heat treatment as well as a more conventional heat treatment more typical of western powder alloys. Tensile, creep and stress rupture mechanical property tests were run. Results of the structural behavior of the alloys after each processing step will be presented and discussed. The role of the Hfon the mechanical properties will be discussed.

Physiological Quality of Pigeonpea Seed after Application of Desiccant Herbicides

The pre-harvest application of herbicides may impair seed quality. This way, this paper was conducted to evaluate the effects of the application of desiccant herbicides on the physiological quality of pigeonpea seeds. Six batches of seeds from plants desiccated with glyphosate were evaluated at doses: 1.125 (B1), 1.5 (B2) and 1.875 L·ha-1 (B3);and Gramocil (20% Paraquat + 10% Diurom) at doses: 1.5 (B4) and 2 L·ha-1 (B5), and a control which received no application (B6). Seed viability was assessed through the germination standard test, and vigor through the first germination count, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, seedling length, seedling dry matter and biomass density tests. The experimental design was the completely randomized, with four replications. Data were submitted to variance analysis, and when significant effects were observed, the Scott- Knott test was carried out at 5% probability using the SISVAR 5.1 software. The results showed that: a) the application of 1.875 L·ha-1 of glyphosate was harmful to pigeonpea seed viability and vigor, evaluated through the accelerated aging test;b) applications of glyphosate in a 1.875 L·ha-1 dose and Gramocil in 2 L·ha-1 resulted in low vigor according to the electrical conductivity test of seeds;and c) the seed vigor measured by the first count, seedling length, seedling dry matter and biomass density test was not influenced by the type of desiccant applied.
