Two new triterpenoid saponins from Ardisia mamillata

Ardisia mamillata Hance (Myrsinaceae) is a widely occurring shrub in southern China. Its roots have been traditionally used to treat respiratory tract infections and menstrual disorders. Other plants of this genus have also been used for this purpose, and are well documented in traditional medicine in Southeast Asia. Recently, we have isolated six new triterpenoid saponins, ardisimamillosides A-F from A. mamillata. In this paper, we report the isolation and structural elucidation of two additional new triterpenoid saponins (1 and 2) from this species.

In this paper, we present a theoretical codebook design method for VQ-based fast face recognition algorithm to im-prove recognition accuracy. Based on the systematic analysis and classification of code patterns, firstly we theoretically create a systematically organized codebook. Combined with another codebook created by Kohonen’s Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) method, an optimized codebook consisted of 2×2 codevectors for facial images is generated. Experimental results show face recognition using such a codebook is more efficient than the codebook consisted of 4×4 codevector used in conventional algorithm. The highest average recognition rate of 98.6% is obtained for 40 persons’ 400 images of publicly available face database of AT&T Laboratories Cambridge containing variations in lighting, posing, and expressions. A table look-up (TLU) method is also proposed for the speed up of the recognition processing. By applying this method in the quantization step, the total recognition processing time achieves only 28 msec, enabling real-time face recognition.

AIM： To select accurately good candidates of hepatic resection for colorectal liver metastasis.METHODS： Thirteen clinicopathological features, which were recognized only before or during surgery, were selected retrospectively in 81 consecutive patients in one hospital （Group Ⅰ ）. These features were entered into a multivariate analysis to determine independent and significant variables affecting long-term prognosis after hepatectomy. Using selected variables, we created a scoring formula to classify patients with colorectal liver metastases to select good candidates for hepatic resection. The usefulness of the new scoring system was examined in a series of 92 patients from another hospital （Group Ⅱ ）, comparing the number of selected variables.RESULTS： Among 81 patients of Group Ⅰ, multivariate analysis, i.e. Cox regression analysis, showed that multiple tumors, the largest tumor greater than 5 cm in diameter, and resectable extrahepatic metastases were significant and independent prognostic factors for poor survival after hepatectomy （P 〈 0.05）. In addition, these three factors： serosa invasion, local lymph node metastases of primary cancers, and postoperative disease free interval less than 1 year including synchronous hepatic metastasis, were not significant, however, they were selected by a stepwise method of Cox regression analysis （0.05 〈 P 〈 0.20）. Using these six variables, we created a new scoring formula to classify patients with colorectal liver metastases. Finally, our new scoring system not only classified patients in Group I very well, but also that in Group Ⅱ, according to long-term outcomes after hepatic resection. The positive number of these six variables also classified them well.CONCLUSION： Both, our new scoring system and the positive number of significant prognostic factors are useful to classify patients with colorectal liver metastases in the preoperative selection of good candidates for hepatic resection.

Associations among pain catastrophizing, muscle strength, and physical performance after total knee and hip arthroplasty

AIM To investigate whether reductions in pain catastrophizing associated with physical performance in the early period after total knee arthroplasty(TKA) or total hip arthroplasty(THA).METHODS The study group of 46 participants underwent TKA or THA. The participants were evaluated within 7d before the operation and at 14d afterwards. Physical performance was measured by the Timed Up and Go(TUG) test, and 10-m gait time was measured at comfortable and maximum speeds. They rated their knee or hip pain using a visual analog scale(VAS) for daily life activities. Psychological characteristics were measured by the Pain Catastrophizing Scale(PCS). Physical characteristics were measured by isometric muscle strength of knee extensors and hip abductors on the operated side. The variables of percent changes between pre-and postoperation were calculated by dividing post-operation score by pre-operation *** Postoperative VAS and PCS were better than preoperative for both TKA and THA. Postoperative physical performance and muscle strength were poorer than preoperative for both TKA and THA. The percent change in physical performance showed no correlation with preoperative variables. In TKA patients, the percent change of PCS showed correlation with percent change of TUG(P = 0.016), 10-m gait time at comfortable speeds(P = 0.003), and 10-m gait time at maximum speeds(P = 0.042). The percent change of muscle strength showed partial correlation with physical *** percent change of VAS showed no correlation with physical performances. On the other hand, in THA patients, the percent change of hip abductor strength showed correlation with percent change of TUG(P =0.047), 10-m gait time at comfortable speeds(P = 0.001),and 10-m gait time at maximum speeds(P = 0.021). In cutting aluminum alloy 6061,continuous chips have a negative influence on the machining ***,Pb is added in order to break continuous ***,from the standpoint of environmental protection,it is necessary to improve chip breakability without adding *** effective measure to improve chip breakability is by adding Si to aluminum alloy ***,the influence of Si content on tool wear has not been fully *** this study,in order to clarify the influence of a diamond-like carbon（DLC） coating layer with a Cr-based interlayer,namely（Al,Cr）N,on cutting performance,aluminum alloys having different Si contents were *** substrate of the tool material was high-speed steel（1.4%C）.The tool wear and the surface roughness were experimentally *** following results were obtained:（1） In cutting two kinds of Al-Si alloys,namely the Al-2%Si alloy and Al-4%Si alloy,the progress of wear of the DLC/（Al,Cr）N-coated tool was slower than that of the DLC-coated ***,the（Al,Cr）N interlayer was effective for decreasing the tool wear of the DLC-coated tool.（2） The wear progress of the two kinds of DLC-coated tools in cutting of Al-4%Si alloy was faster than that in cutting of Al-2%Si alloy.（3） In cutting of Al-2%Si alloy with the（Al,Cr）N/DLC-coated tool,the surface roughness was almost constant in the range of a cutting distance from 0.1 km to 9.5 km.

Ilex latifolia Thunb., one of the species in the Ilex genus used in the Chinese tea "Ku-Ding-Cha," has been used in China as a diuretic, remedy for sore throats, weight loss and for the relief of hypertension. In our previous papers, we have reported the isolation and identification of triterpenes and four new saponins, latifoloside I-L, from the bark of this species. As a part of our continuing study, this paper deals with the isolation and structural elucidation of two new lignan glycosides (1 and 2).

Purpose:Lengthy hospitalization places a burden on patients and healthcare ***,the factors affecting the length of hospital stay(LHoS)and length of emergency room stay(LERS)in non-fatal bicycle accidents are currently *** investigated these factors to inform efforts to minimize ***:We performed a retrospective analysis of data from non-fatal injured bicyclists admitted to the Emergency and Critical Care Center at Kyoto Medical Center between January 2012 and December *** measured LHoS,LERS,mechanism of injury,head injury prevalence,polytrauma,operations performed,injury severity score(ISS),abbreviated injury scale(AIS)score,maximum AIS score,and trauma and injury severity score probability of *** conducted multiple regression analysis to determine predictors of LHoS and ***:Within the study period,82 victims met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and were *** age was(46.0±24.7)*** mean LHoS was(16.8±25.2)days,mean LERS was(10.6±14.7)days,median ISS was 9(interquartile range(IQR):3-16),median maximum AIS was 3(IQR:1-4),and median trauma and injury severity score probability of survival was 98.0%(IQR:95.5%-99.6%).Age,maximum AIS,ISS,and prevalence of surgery were significantly greater in long LHoS and LERS group compared with short LHoS and LERS group(p<0.05).Performance of surgery independently explained LHoS(p=0.0003)and ISS independently explained LERS(p=0.0009).Conclusion:Surgery was associated with long hospital stays and ISS was associated with long emergency room *** improve the quality life of the bicyclists,preventive measures for reducing injury severity or avoiding injuries needing operation are required.

Habitual alcohol consumers’ understanding of “moderate drinking”: A cross-sectional study in Japan

The Healthy Japan 21 project launched in FY2000 advocated dissemination of the knowledge that intake of about 20 g of pure alcohol per day represents a “moderate” drinking level. The aim of the present study was to explore various points that have been debated with regard to “moderate drinking”. An Internet-based questionnaire survey was administered to normal adults who habitually drank alcohol one or more days a week, and we studied the amount of alcohol consumed by those who responded that they did moderately without fail. Gender-based logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between “non-moderate drinking” on the one hand and drinking frequency, marital status, and lifestyle habits on the other. Responses were obtained from 1088 persons (548 men and 540 women) (response rate: 57.6%), of whom 31.9% of the men and 53.6% of the women responded that they drank moderately without fail. Among these drinkers, 54.6% of the men and 78.2% of the women in reality drank moderately. For both men and women, the odds ratio (OR) for “non-moderate drinking” increased as drinking frequency increased. When “1 to 2 days a week” was taken as the reference, the OR values for “every day” were 8.69 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 4.98 - 15.14) for men and 7.35 (95% CI: 4.20 - 12.88) for women. Furthermore, significantly higher ORs were observed among both single men and single women, and among male smokers. The present study has clarified that dissemination of knowledge about “moderate drinking” has not been effective. Encouraging more awareness of the importance of drinking frequency is also considered necessary.
