Predictive value of multi-detector computed tomography for accurate diagnosis of serous cystadenoma:radiologic-pathologic correlation

AIM： To identify multi-detector computed tomography （MDCT） features most predictive of serous cystadenomas （SCAs）, correlating with histopathology, and to study the impact of cyst size and MDCT technique on reader performance. MeTHODS： The MDCT scans of 164 patients with surgically verified pancreatic cystic lesions were reviewed by two readers to study the predictive value of various morphological features for establishing a diagnosis of SCAs. Accuracy in lesion characterization and reader confidence were correlated with lesion size （≤3 cm or 〉≥3 cm） and scanning protocols （dedicated vs routine）. ReSULTS： 28/164 cysts （mean size, 39 mm; range, 8-92 mm） were diagnosed as SCA on pathology. The MDCT features predictive of diagnosis of SCA were microcystic appearance （22/28, 78.6%）, surface Iobulations （25/28, 89.3%） and central scar （9/28, 32.4%）. Stepwise logistic regression analysis showed that only microcystic appearance was significant for CT diagnosis of SCA （P = 0.0001）. The sensitivity, specificity and PPV of central scar and of combined microcystic appearance and Iobulations were 32.4%/100%/100% and 68%/100%/100%, respectively. The reader confidence was higher for lesions 〉 3 cm （P = 0.02） and for MDCT scans performed using thin collimation （1.25-2.5 mm） compared to routine 5 mm collimation exams （P 〉 0.05）. CONCLUSION： Central scar on MDCT is diagnostic of SCA but is seen in only one third of SCAs. Microcystic morphology is the most significant CT feature in diagnosis of SCA. A combination of microcystic appearance and surface Iobulations offers accuracy comparable to central scar with higher sensitivity.

This paper describes an experimental investigation on the flow characteristics within a rotating cylinder containing a rolling bed of sand. The axis of the cylinder was horizontal and there was no axial bulk flow of particles. The velocity field of the gas flowing through the cylinder was measured by hot-wire anemometry. The measurements indicate that the velocity field is asymmetric with respect to a diameter perpendicular to the granular bed. CfD calculations confirm this finding. The gas velocity profiles are crucial in determining heat transfer from gas to solid.

Computational Analysis of Physicochemical, Pharmacokinetic and Toxicological Properties of Deoxyhypusine Synthase Inhibitors with Antimalarial Activity

Malaria is a parasitic disease which has as etiological agents protozoa of the genus Plasmodium prevalent in tropical countries. The appearance of Plasmodium strains resistant to artemisinin has become necessary the development of new drugs using computational tools to combat this epidemic. Diverse transporter proteins can act as antimalarials targets, thereby being the enzyme deoxyhypusine synthase a promising antimalarial target. The present study aimed to investigate 15 most active inhibitors of deoxyhypusine synthase target, deposited in databases Binding DB, in order to trace a pattern of physicochemical, pharmacokinetic and toxicological properties of the inhibitors for this enzyme and propose new inhibitors of deoxyhypusine synthase target. The physicochemical properties were obtained according to the Lipinski parameters to evaluate oral absorption. Based on the certain properties were proposed three new inhibitors (A, B and C). The ADMe/Tox properties were calculated for new inhibitors compared with results of the selected compounds. The fifteen inhibitors for oral administration showed satisfactory results, because they have adapted to the Lipinski parameters. In relation to the penetration of the blood-brain barrier the inhibitors analyzed showed penetration values less than 1, and ranged from 0.0411815 to 0.481764, being that the compound 1 showed value of CBrain/CBlood = 0.135467. Compound B showed a higher strength in plasma protein binding in relation to the compound 1, having a variation be-tween them of ±1.489344. Therefore, the compound B would present a longer halflife compared with compound 1. The proposed compounds showed positive and satisfactory results, being able to reach less adverse effects related to the central nervous system depending of administered dose.

The GP130 cytokine receptor subunit encoded by IL6ST is the shared receptor for ten cytokines of the IL-6 family. We describe a homozygous non-synonymous variant in IL6 ST(p.R281 Q) in a patient with craniosynostosis and retained deciduous teeth. We characterize the impact of the variant on cytokine signaling in vitro using transfected cell lines as well as primary patient-derived cells and support these findings using a mouse model with the corresponding genome-edited variant Il6 st p.R279 Q. We show that human GP130 p.R281 Q is associated with selective loss of IL-11 signaling without affecting IL-6, IL-27, OSM, LIf, CT1, CLC, and CNTf signaling. In mice Il6 st p.R279 Q lowers litter size and causes facial synostosis and teeth abnormalities. The effect on IL-11 signaling caused by the GP130 variant shows incomplete penetrance but phenocopies aspects of IL11 ra deficiency in humans and mice. Our data show that a genetic variant in a pleiotropic cytokine receptor can have remarkably selective defects.

mi R-122 negatively correlates with liver fibrosis as detected by histology and fibroScan

AIM: To investigate whether expression of selected mi RNAs obtained from fibrotic liver biopsies correlate with fibrosis ***: Altogether, 52 patients were enrolled in the study representing various etiologic backgrounds of fibrosis: 24 cases with chronic hepatitis infections(types B, C), 19 with autoimmune liver diseases(autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, overlapping syndrome cases), and 9 of mixed etiology(alcoholic and nonalcoholic steatosis, cryptogenic cases). Severity of fibrosis was determined by both histologic staging using the MetaVIR scoring system and noninvasive transient elastography. following RNAisolation, expression levels of mi R-21, mi R-122, mi R-214, mi R-221, mi R-222, and mi R-224 were determined using taq Man Micro RNA Assays applying mi R-140 as the reference. Selection of mi RNAs was based on their characteristic up- or downregulation observed in hepatocellular carcinoma. effects of Trinexapac-ethyl on different wheat varieties under desert conditions of Mexico

A field study was conducted to determine the effect of Trinexapac-ethyl (Te) on four wheat varieties (rafi C97, Altar C84, Nacori C97 and rayon f86) at three growth stages (first node, second node and flag leaf). Te application (150 g a.i. ha-1) reduced plant height and decreased grain yield at any growth stage. Yield decrease was associated to a significant reduction in the number of grains per spike and in grain weight. Te delayed flowering time and grain maturity, while stem diameter and spikes m-2 were not affected. further studies are needed to clarify the effect of Te on wheat under desert conditions of Mexico.

Ultra-precision machining of reflector array for laser diode beam shaping

Ultra-precision machining is an effective approach to achieve high dimension accuracy and surface finish required in optical and laser components. An extensive study using a two-axis diamond turning machine is conducted to machine the reflector arrays used for laser diode beam shaping. To position the workpiece precisely, theoretical analysis is made so that the dimensional accuracy can be achieved. Investigations into machining burr reduction are carried out. With the process developed, reflectors with optical surface finish of 8 nm in ra and minimized burr size of less than 0.5 μm have been achieved.

Glycemic Response of Type 2 Diabetics to raisins

Background: raisins are a nutritious fruit snack containing fiber, antioxidants, and potassium. Diabetics tend to have low fruit intakes, possibly due to concerns about glycemic response. Aim: This study sought to characterize the utility of raisins as a way to improve fruit consumption by type 2 diabetics. Methods: fasting type 2 diabetics randomly received 100 Calorie servings of bananas (BA;103.1 g), white bread (WB;40.2 g), raisins (ra;30.3 g), or Thompson seedless grapes (TG;112.4 g) on each of four separate lab visits in single cross-over fashion. Blood glucose (n = 15) and plasma insulin (n = 7) were measured before and 30, 60, 120 minutes after snack consumption. Results: Relative to baseline, blood glucose peaked significantly at 30 minutes for TG, ra and WB at 204.6 ± 16.2, 180.5 ± 12.7, and 176.2 ± 12.2 mg/dL, respectively, the 30 minute value for BA (173.2 ± 11.6 mg/dL) approached significance (p = 0.12). At 30 minutes, the blood glucose values for BA and TG differed significantly, at all other times no significant differences were observed, and all values returned to near baseline 120 minutes after consumption. Postprandial plasma insulin increased for all treatments, though not significantly. Conclusion: The extended shelf life and portability of raisins may make them an attractive choice for improving fruit consumption in type 2 diabetics.
