Overview of enhancing biological treatment of coal chemical wastewater:New strategies and future directions

Coal chemical wastewater(CCW)is a type of refractory industrial wastewater,and its treatment has become the main bottleneck restricting the sustainable development of novel coal chemical industry.Biological treatment is considered as an economical,effective and environmentally friendly technology for CCW treatment.However,conventional biological process is difficult to achieve the efficient removal of refractory organics because of CCW with the characteristics of composition complexity and high toxicity.Therefore,seeking the novel enhancement strategy appears to be a favorable solution for enhancing biological treatment efficiency of CCW.This review focuses on presenting a comprehensive picture about the exogenous enhancement strategies for CCW biological treatment.The performance and potential application of exogenous enhancement strategies,including co-metabolic substrate enhancement,biofilm filler enhancement,adsorption material enhancement and conductive mediator enhancement,were expounded.Meanwhile,the enhancing mechanisms of different strategies were comprehensively discussed from a biological perspective.Furthermore,the prospects of enhancement strategies based on the engineering performance,economic cost and environmental impact(3E)evaluation were introduced.And novel enhancement strategy based on“low carbon emissions”,“resource recycling”and“water environment security”in the context of carbon neutrality was proposed.Taken together,this review provides technical reference and new direction to facilitate the regulation and optimization of typical industrial wastewater biological treatment.

Biotoxicity dynamic change and key toxic organics identification of coal chemical wastewater along a novel full-scale treatment process

It is particularly important to comprehensively assess the biotoxicity variation of industrial wastewater along the treatment process for ensuring the water environment security.However,intensive studies on the biotoxicity reduction of industrial wastewater are still limited.In this study,the toxic organics removal and biotoxicity reduction of coal chemical wastewater(CCW)along a novel full-scale treatment process based on the pretreatment process-anaerobic process-biological enhanced(BE)process-anoxic/oxic(A/O)process-advanced treatment process was evaluated.This process performed great removal efficiency of COD,total phenol,NH_(4)^(+)-N and total nitrogen.And the biotoxicity variation along the treatment units was analyzed from the perspective of acute biotoxicity,genotixicity and oxidative damage.The results indicated that the effluent of pretreatment process presented relatively high acute biotoxicity to Tetrahymena thermophila.But the acute biotoxicity was significantly reduced in BE-A/O process.And the genotoxicity and oxidative damage to Tetrahymena thermophila were significantly decreased after advanced treatment.The polar organics in CCW were identified as the main biotoxicity contributors.Phenols were positively correlated with acute biotoxicity,while the nitrogenous heterocyclic compounds and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were positively correlated with genotoxicity.Although the biotoxicity was effectively reduced in the novel full-scale treatment process,the effluent still performed potential biotoxicity,which need to be further explored in order to reduce environmental risk.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease(MASLD)affects approximately 25%of the world's population and has become a leading cause of chronic liver disease.In recent years,an increasing amount of data suggests that MASLD is associated with aging.As the population ages,age-related MASLD will become a major global health problem.Targeting an aging will become a new approach to the treatment of MASLD.This paper reviews the current studies on the role of aging-related factors and therapeutic targets in MASLD,including:Oxidative stress,autophagy,mitochondrial homeostasis,bile acid metabolism homeostasis,and dysbiosis.The aim is to identify effective therapeutic targets for age-related MASLD and its progression.

The source of Double ITCZ induced by the SST bias over the tropical western Pacific as reflected in CAS-ESM2 Model

“Double ITCZ”is a common precipitation bias over the tropical Pacific in current climate models and Earth system models,but the reasons for its formation are still worth exploring and discussing.In this study,we adopted the second version of Chinese Academy of Sciences Earth System Model(CAS-ESM2),by comparing a set of sea surface temperature(SST)bias correction experiments over the tropical Pacific,to explore the possible mechanism of SST bias on inducing the“Double ITCZ”from the perspective of the climatic annual mean bias in the coupled model.We revealed that the simulated climatic annual mean SST bias over the tropical Pacific can affect the bias of latent heat flux through the saturation specific humidity,and the bias of latent heat flux can further affect that of vertical velocity of humid air by the condensation release mechanism,and finally modulate the simulated bias in precipitation.Furthermore,through the inter-comparison between different experiments,it is found that the source of Double ITCZ might mainly come from the annual mean SST bias over the tropical western Pacific through the proposed air-sea coupled process of“SST-saturated specific humidity-latent heat flux-vertical velocity-precipitation”,indicating a possible way on reducing the couple biases in models over the tropical Pacific to improve the accuracy of CAS-ESM2 for climate simulation.

Three-dimensional numerical manifold method for heat conduction problems with a simplex integral on the boundary

The three-dimensional numerical manifold method(3D-NMM),which is based on the derivation of Galerkin's variation,is a powerful calculation tool that uses two cover systems.The 3D-NMM can be used to handle continue-discontinue problems and extend to THM coupling.In this study,we extended the 3D-NMM to simulate both steady-state and transient heat conduction problems.The modelling was carried out using the raster methods(RSM).For the system equation,a variational method was employed to drive the discrete equations,and the crucial boundary conditions were solved using the penalty method.To solve the boundary integral problem,the face integral of scalar fields and two-dimensional simplex integration were used to accurately describe the integral on polygonal boundaries.Several numerical examples were used to verify the results of 3D steady-state and transient heat-conduction problems.The numerical results indicated that the 3D-NMM is effective for handling 3D both steadystate and transient heat conduction problems with high solution accuracy.

Comparison of Rotating Stall Warning by Different Methods for Variable Speed Configurations in a Contra-Rotating Compressor

Stall in compressors can cause performance degradation and even lead to disasters.These unacceptable consequences can be avoided by timely monitoring stall inception and taking effective measures.This paper focused on the rotating stall warning in a low-speed axial contra-rotating compressor.Firstly,the stall disturbance characteristics under different speed configurations were analyzed.The results showed that as the speed ratio(RR)increased,the stall disturbance propagation speed based on the rear rotor speed gradually decreased.Subsequently,the standard deviation(SD) method,the cross-correlation(CC) method,and the discrete wavelet transform(DWT)method were employed to obtain the stall initiation moments of three different speed configurations.It was found that the SD and CC methods did not achieve significant stall warning results in all three speed configurations.Besides,the stall initiation moment obtained by the DWT method at RR=1.125 was one period after the stall had fully developed,which was unacceptable.Therefore,a stall warning method was developed in the present work based on the long short-term memory(LSTM) regression model.By applying the LSTM model,the predicted stall initiation moments of three speed configurations were at the 557th,518th,and 333rd revolution,which were44,2,and 74 revolutions ahead of stall onset moments,respectively.Furthermore,in scenarios where a minor disturbance preceded the stall,the stall warning effect of the LSTM was greatly improved in comparison with the aforementioned three methods.In contrast,when the pressure fluctuation before the stall was relatively small,the differences between the stall initiation moments predicted by these four methods were not significant.

Numerical manifold method for thermo-mechanical coupling simulation of fractured rock mass

As a calculation method based on the Galerkin variation,the numerical manifold method(NMM)adopts a double covering system,which can easily deal with discontinuous deformation problems and has a high calculation accuracy.Aiming at the thermo-mechanical(TM)coupling problem of fractured rock masses,this study uses the NMM to simulate the processes of crack initiation and propagation in a rock mass under the influence of temperature field,deduces related system equations,and proposes a penalty function method to deal with boundary conditions.Numerical examples are employed to confirm the effectiveness and high accuracy of this method.By the thermal stress analysis of a thick-walled cylinder(TWC),the simulation of cracking in the TWC under heating and cooling conditions,and the simulation of thermal cracking of the SwedishÄspöPillar Stability Experiment(APSE)rock column,the thermal stress,and TM coupling are obtained.The numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the test data and other numerical results,thus verifying the effectiveness of the NMM in dealing with thermal stress and crack propagation problems of fractured rock masses.

RARRES2 regulates lipid metabolic reprogramming to mediate the development of brain metastasis in triple negative breast cancer

Background Triple negative breast cancer(TNBC),the most aggressive subtype of breast cancer,is characterized by a high incidence of brain metastasis(BrM)and a poor prognosis.As the most lethal form of breast cancer,BrM remains a major clinical challenge due to its rising incidence and lack of effective treatment strategies.Recent evidence suggested a potential role of lipid metabolic reprogramming in breast cancer brain metastasis(BCBrM),but the underlying mechanisms are far from being fully elucidated.Methods Through analysis of BCBrM transcriptome data from mice and patients,and immunohistochemical validation on patient tissues,we identified and verified the specific down-regulation of retinoic acid receptor responder 2(RARRES2),a multifunctional adipokine and chemokine,in BrM of TNBC.We investigated the effect of aberrant RARRES2 expression of BrM in both in vitro and in vivo studies.Key signaling pathway components were evaluated using multi-omics approaches.Lipidomics were performed to elucidate the regulation of lipid metabolic reprogramming of RARRES2.Results We found that downregulation of RARRES2 is specifically associated with BCBrM,and that RARRES2 deficiency promoted BCBrM through lipid metabolic reprogramming.Mechanistically,reduced expression of RARRES2 in brain metastatic potential TNBC cells resulted in increased levels of glycerophospholipid and decreased levels of triacylglycerols by regulating phosphatase and tensin homologue(PTEN)-mammalian target of rapamycin(mTOR)-sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1(SREBP1)signaling pathway to facilitate the survival of breast cancer cells in the unique brain microenvironment.Conclusions Our work uncovers an essential role of RARRES2 in linking lipid metabolic reprogramming and the development of BrM.RARRES2-dependent metabolic functions may serve as potential biomarkers or therapeutic targets for BCBrM.

Chinese Medicine Combined with Adjuvant Chemotherapy for Improving Myelosuppression in Colorectal Cancer Patients: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of Chinese herbal medicine(CHM) combined with adjuvant chemotherapy on myelosuppression for colorectal cancer(CRC) patients using network meta-analysis(NMA). Methods: Literature searches in both international(PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library) and Chinese(China Science and Technology Journal Database, Wanfang Data, China National Knowledge Infrastructure) databases for relevant randomized controlled trials(RCTs) were conducted from inception until October 10, 2022. We included RCTs of patients who received CHM combined with chemotherapy, including FOLFOX, XELOX, FOLFIRI, and other relevant regimens in the CHM treatment group. The outcomes included the incidence of myelosuppression, leukopenia, hemoglobin reduction, and thrombocytopenia. Two reviewers independently screened the databases, extracted the data, and assessed the risk of bias and credibility of evidence. RevMan 5.4.1 software and STATA 14.0 were used to perform the NMA. Results: A total of 31 RCTs were included, published from 2008 to 2021 in Chinese. Among these, 2,314 participants comparing the following 9 CHMs were identified: Shengbai Recipe(SBR), Bazhen Decoction(BZD), Jianpi Jiedu Recipe(JJR), Jianpi Recipe(JR), Compound Cantharis Capsule(CCC), Zaofan Pill(ZFP), Guilu Erxian Gel(GL), Buzhong Tiaogan Decoction(BZ), and Qiamagu Capsule(QM). The results of NMA found an indirect comparison. Based on the surface under the cumulative ranking curve(SUCRA), the ZFP+ chemotherapy group had the lowest incidence of myelosuppression, with an odds ratio(OR) of 0.08 [95% confidence interval(CI): 0.01, 0.76], whereas the GL+ chemotherapy group had the lowest incidence of leukopenia, hemoglobin reduction, and thrombocytopenia, with an OR of 5.25(95% CI: 2.41, 11.43), 4.66(95% CI: 2.23, 9.72), and 0.27(95% CI: 0.13, 0.54), respectively. Moreover, BZD + chemotherapy could alleviate leukopenia, hemoglobin reduction, and thrombocytopenia(P<0.01). Pairwise comparison showed that there was no difference in the

AIM:To assess the performance of macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer thickness(mGCIPLT)and 10-2 visual field(VF)parameters in detecting early glaucoma and evaluating the severity of advanced glaucoma.METHODS:Totally 127 eyes from 89 participants(36 eyes of 19 healthy participants,45 eyes of 31 early glaucoma patients and 46 eyes of 39 advanced glaucoma patients)were included.The relationships between the optical coherence tomography(OCT)-derived parameters and VF sensitivity were determined.Patients with early glaucoma were divided into eyes with or without central 10°of the VF damages(CVFDs),and the diagnostic performances of OCT-derived parameters were assessed.RESULTS:In early glaucoma,the mGCIPLT was significantly correlated with 10-2 VF pattern standard deviation(PSD;with average mGCIPLT:β=-0.046,95%CI,-0.067 to-0.024,P<0.001).In advanced glaucoma,the mGCIPLT was related to the 24-2 VF mean deviation(MD;with average mGCIPLT:β=0.397,95%CI,0.199 to 0.595,P<0.001),10-2 VF MD(with average mGCIPLT:β=0.762,95%CI,0.485 to 1.038,P<0.001)and 24-2 VF PSD(with average mGCIPLT:β=0.244,95%CI,0.124 to 0.364,P<0.001).Except for the minimum and superotemporal mGCIPLT,the decrease of mGCIPLT in early glaucomatous eyes with CVFDs was more severe than that of early glaucomatous eyes without CVFDs.The area under the curve(AUC)of the average mGCIPLT(AUC=0.949,95%CI,0.868 to 0.982)was greater than that of the average circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness(cpRNFLT;AUC=0.827,95%CI,0.674 to 0.918)and rim area(AUC=0.799,95%CI,0.610 to 0.907)in early glaucomatous eyes with CVFDs versus normal eyes.CONCLUSION:The 10-2 VF and mGCIPLT parameters are complementary to 24-2 VF,cpRNFLT and ONH parameters,especially in detecting early glaucoma with CVFDs and evaluating the severity of advanced glaucoma in group level.
