Electrical Resistance Change of Carbon/Epoxy Composite Laminates under Cyclic Loading under Damage Initiation Limit

Self-sensing multifunctional composite has sensing function using electrical resistance changes. Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composite is one of the self-sensing multifunctional composites. For the reliability of the self-sensing, electrical contact between the lead wire and the carbon fibers is the most important issue. The present study focuses on the effect of the cyclic loading of lower applied strain range than the fatigue damage level. As a result, the electrical contact resistance at the copper electrode increased with the increase of cycles. That means that the electrical change at the electrodes must be considered for the long-term self-sensing monitoring system. When a four-probe method is used to measure the electrical resistance, the contact resistance effect is minimized. Moreover, angle-ply laminates have plastic deformation caused by shear loading, and that causes electrical resistance decrease during the cyclic loading. Cross-ply laminates of CFRP composites have no electrical resistance increase without damage. Quasi-isotropic laminates of CFRP composites, however, have electrical resistance decrease with the increase of the number of cycles because of the plastic deformation of the angle-ply laminates.

Consecutive Impact Loading and Preloading Effect on Stiffness of Woven Synthetic-Fiber Rope

We studied consecutive impact loading on woven high-modulus polyethylene rope, which is used in robotics fields. An impact tester was developed to conduct the experiments. Five consecutive impact loads (five drops) were applied to the rope and the stiffness of the loading part that corresponds to each drop was evaluated. The stiffness of the woven ropes was affected strongly by consecutive impact loading. The change in stiffness is undesirable in some applications such as in robotic fields. Therefore, we have proposed a method that can optimize changes in stiffness by applying a preload before impact testing (preload treatment). The experimental results show that preload is an efficient way to reduce changing rope stiffness. We have also proposed an empirical equation that can estimate the rope stiffness after arbitrary preload treatment, and this equation is a function of the number of drops and the static preload level. The equation can be used to determine the preload treatment conditions to stabilize the stiffness of the woven ropes before they are used in engineering fields.

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites (CFRP) have been applied to aerospace and automobile structures. For many CFRP structures, mechanical metallic fasteners are usually adopted. For the fasteners used in internal structures such as a wing box, the damage to the CFRP structures around fastener holes is visually quite difficult to find. A simple method to find the damage around fastener holes is required. In this study a self-sensing time domain reflectometry (TDR) method is newly applied to detect bearing failure around the fastener holes of CFRP structures. A microstrip-line method is generally used to create a transmission line. When the transmission line is mounted near the metallic fasteners, they may affect the impedance of the transmission line. In this study, the effect of distance between the fasteners and the transmission line was numerically investigated using a finite difference time domain analysis method. After finding the appropriate distance, experiments were performed to detect the bearing failure around a fastener hole. The experiments showed the performance of the self-sensing TDR for detecting bearing failure.

Background:The only drug approved for pervasive developmental disorders(PDD)in Japan is *** psychotropic drugs are also prescribed for offlabel use in Japan,but details regarding their prescription and use are largely *** purpose of this study was to clarify the use of drug treatment in Japanese children with ***:Data were extracted from claims data from the Japan Medical Data Center for children younger than 18 years of age who were newly diagnosed with PDD(International Classification of Diseases version 10 codes:F84)from 2005 to 2010(total of 3276 patients as of 2010).The prescription rates were presented as the percentage of PDD patients who were prescribed each ***:Prior to 2010,the prescription rates for atypical antipsychotics,other antipsychotics,psychostimulants,all other central nervous system drugs,anticovnvulsants,non-barbiturates,and Parkinson’s disease/syndrome drugs significantly increased among the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical classifications defined as the“nervous system”(trend P≤0.02).The prescription rate for risperidone consistently increased,reaching 6.9%in 2010(trend P<0.0001),the highest rate of the surveyed drugs among the *** prescription rate for aripiprazole also increased(trend P<0.0001),reaching 1.9%in *** prescription rate for pimozide showed no annual changes,with a low rate of 0.4%in ***:Compared with pimozide,the prescription rates for risperidone,aripiprazole and other psychotropic drugs have *** safety data for these drugs in Japanese children are sparse,there is a need for future safety evaluations of these drugs in Japanese children.

The relationship between tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy and overall survival in patients with non-small cell lung cancer carrying EGFR mutations

For patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation-positive lung cancer, the relationship between the dose or duration of treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) and overall survival remains unclear. Here, we analyzed clinical data of 39 patients who were diagnosed with EGFR mutation-positive non-small cell lung cancer and treated with TKI, but subsequently died. Several parameters were measured in this study: overall survival; first, second, and overall TKI therapy durations; first TKI intensity (actual dose/normal dose); and TKI rate (overall TKI therapy duration/overall survival). The response rate to TKI therapy was 50% , and the median survival was 553 days. After TKI therapy failed, 38.5% patients were re-challenged with TKI. We observed a moderate relationship [r = 0.534, 95% confidential interval (CI) = 0.263 to 0.727, P < 0.001] between overall TKI therapy duration and overall survival. However, we found no relationship between overall survival and first TKI intensity (r = 0.073, 95% CI = -0.380 to 0.247, P = 0.657) or TKI rate (r = 0.0345, 95% CI = -0.284 to 0.346, P = 0.835). Nonsmall cell lung cancer patients with mutation-positive tumors remained on TKI therapy for, on average, 33% of the overall survival time. These findings suggest that patients with EGFR mutation-positive tumors should not stick to using TKIs.

The Relationships between Dyeing Methods and Dyeability in Hair Colouring by Utilising Enzymatic Oxidation of (+)-Catechin

The enzymatic oxidation of (+)-catechin (Cat) with copper-containing oxidase, tyrosinase, was applied to hair colouring in the study. The Cat is oxidised to be o-benzoquinone form, the catechinone, which works as the hair dyestuff. Four kinds of hair colouring techniques using Cat were examined and each of their dyeability was compared in order to improve it. The first dyeing method is dyeing hair by the redissolved catechinone, which is preliminarily obtained by the oxidation of Cat (Redissolution Dyeing Method). The second one is dyeing hair in the dye solution just after the dye being formed by the enzymatic reaction (Sequential Dyeing Method). The third one is dyeing hair in solution containing Cat and the dyeing process is accompanied by the oxidation of Cat (Simultaneous Oxidation Dyeing Method). The fourth one is two-step dyeing that the hair immersed in Cat solution at the first step and then it is oxidised enzymatically to colour at the second step (Post-Oxidation Dyeing Method). The hair is dyed pale yellow by Redissolution Method, deeper yellowish brown by Sequential and Simultaneous Oxidation Dyeing Method and slightly reddish brown by Post-Oxidation Method with Cat. The order of their dyeability is the Simultaneous Oxidation ≈ Post-Oxidation > Sequential > Redissolution Dyeing Method at 30°C. The dyeability of Redissolution Method increases with an increase in dyeing temperature (T) between 20°C - 60°C. In Simultaneous Oxidation Method, the T increment also provides higher dyeability, and the colour of dyed hair becomes duller over 50°C. The Post-Oxidation Method shows higher dyeability at the lower oxidation temperature (20 °C - 40°C).

Self-Sensing Curved Micro-Strip Line Method for Damage Detection of CFRP Composites

A self-sensing Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) method for Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) laminates has been propped in the present study: carbon fibres are used as sensors using a transmission line. Authors have published research articles of the self-sensing TDR method. The self-sensing TDR method reduces number of required electrodes for damage detections although the sensitivity of detection is sacrificed. A micro-strip line (MSL) method is adopted to obtain impedance matching with a coaxial cable and successfully detected damage in a CFRP laminate in the previous study. In the present study, a long curved MSL is experimentally investigated as an impedance-matched transmission line for detection of damage of a CFRP laminate in wider area. Fibre breakage is simulated as a hole made by drilling. As a CFRP laminate has strongly orthotropic electric conductance and the electric properties of a CFRP laminate at the high frequency are not clarified, the effect of the orthotropic conductance at the curved transmission line is experimentally investigated. As a result, the effect of orthotropic conductance at the curved strip line is shown to be negligible, and fiber breakage that locates closed to the copper strip line can be detected by the self-sensing curved MSL method. It is, however, difficult to detect damage far from the copper strip line.
