Background: Evidence regarding the effectiveness of prenatal nutritional supplements has mainly considered anthropometric pregnancy outcomes. The effect on markers of health and disease， such as offspring telomere length (TL) and mitochondrial DNA content (mtDNAc) is unknown. Objectives: We assessed the efficacy of maternal multiple micronutrient (MMN)-fortified balanced-energy protein (BEP) and iron-folic acid (IFA) supplementation on newborn TL as a secondary outcome and mtDNAc as a non-declared outcome. Design: We conducted a randomized controlled trial in rural Burkina Faso， among pregnant females (15-40 years old) enrolled at 0.05) by adjusting the regression models for potential prognostic factors of study outcomes at enrollment. Exploratory analyses indicated higher， but non-significantly different mtDNAc among children born either small-for-gestational age， low birthweight， or preterm. Conclusions: Newborns from mothers who received daily nutritional supplements across gestation did not have different relative TL or mtDNAc.

Following several damaging earthquakes in China, research has been devoted to find the causes of the collapse of reinforced concrete （RC） building sand studying the vulnerability of existing buildings. The Chinese Code for Seismic Design of Buildings （CCSDB） has evolved over time, however, there is still reported earthquake induced damage of newly designed RC buildings. Thus, to investigate modern Chinese seismic design code, three low-, mid- and high-rise RC frames were designed according to the 2010 CCSDB and the corresponding vulnerability curves were derived by computing a probabilistic seismic demand model （PSDM）.The PSDM was computed by carrying out nonlinear time history analysis using thirty ground motions obtained from the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center. Finally, the PSDM was used to generate fragility curves for immediate occupancy, significant damage, and collapse prevention damage levels. Results of the vulnerability assessment indicate that the seismic demands on the three different frames designed according to the 2010 CCSDB meet the seismic requirements and are almost in the same safety level.

以“学生为中心”的教学法是在新理念下实行素质教育的保证,该理念强调学习者在获取知识、技能和能力方面所发挥的积极作用。然而,包括厄立特里亚在内的大多数发展中国家在实践该教学法的过程中面临着诸多挑战。本文通过对厄立特里亚阿斯马拉8所高中的170名教师进行问卷调查,并分别在其中4所学校抽取教师、教学主管和校长共计24人进行深度访谈,采用量化分析和质性研究相结合的方法,旨在探究教师在实施以“学生为中心”的教学模式时的具体做法和存在的问题。运用自我描述问卷法与焦点小组访谈法收集调查数据,并采用描述性统计和自上而下的主题分析法进行分析。结果表明,当前“以学生为中心”的教学方法尚未成熟,将其运用于高中阶段存在较大困难。相对公平的实践因素包括学生的自律能力、协作性学习以及社会支持和情感支持。然而,学习评估后的个性化和定制化学习作为实践因素被应用得最少。此外,采取“以学生为中心”教学法存在诸多障碍,如:教师和学生对“以学生中心”教学法的态度与认识、资源匮乏、时间限制、应试评估、学科文化、制度障碍、班额过大等。因此,了解教师采用“以学生为中心”教学法的具体情况,分析其中存在的问题,将为厄立特里亚的课程开发人员、决策者和教师培训者提供新的视角与建议。

Introduction: The key to successful elimination of tuberculosis (TB) is treatment of cases with optimum chemotherapy. Irrational anti-TB drug use over time has led to drug-resistant TB. The treatment of MDR-TB with second line drugs is long, complex and costly, and has a considerable rate of adverse effects. The level of ADR reporting is low in Ethiopia due to different factors. This Study conducted in a selected treated area in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and helped the health care centers to understand the prevalence of ADR related MDR-TB and be aware of those adverse effects in order to detect them early and be prepared to take proper steps when they occur. Aim of the Study: To determine the prevalence and risk factor of adverse drug reactions associated treatments of Multidrug Resistant tuberculosis. Method: This was a cross sectional study, which was conducted between March 2012 and February 2013 at St. Peter TB specialized hospital and AHRI/ALERT. 73 MDR TB patients, who were on MDR TB treatments, enrolled to the study. Adverse Drug Reactions associated MDR TB treatments were assessed by patient history review and questionnaire. Chemistry laboratory was used to test renal function, thyroid function, liver enzyme and potassium level. Result: In 72 patients, at least two ADRs were found. The mean age of the study population (Mean ± SD) was 28 ± 8.8. In this study the most commonly found adverse drug reactions (ADRs) were: Anorexia 83.3%, Nausea and vomiting 82%, Gastritis 64%, Arteralgia 47%, Skin rash and itching 45%, Headache 29.2%, Depression 22.2% and Blurred vision 19.4%. Using binary logistic regression model older age (COR 8.71, 95% [CI] 1.06 - 71.9), alcoholism (COR 4.05, 95% [CI] 1.05 - 15.6), smoking (COR 0.24, 95% [CI] 0.06 - 0.87) and concomitant drug intake (COR 0.14, 95% [CI] 0.03 - 0.76) were independent predictors for ADRs. A declining rate filter operating through over flow control mode is proposed in this paper with a view to improving the overall performance of declining rate filters. Traditional declining rate filters have in-built self-adjustment of flow rates among the filters assisted with downstream orifice for flow control with limited flexibility for further adjustment. The proposed design allows the control of flow level and flow rates in individual filters, the water level in the over flow distributor tank and offers increased flexibility in responding to changes in filtration variables and optimising the overall performance of the filters. The design set up can also operate as constant rate filter through setting the water level in the distributor tank to the maximum.

Harnessing the freely available source of energy from the sun offers a number of additional benefits. Not least of these benefits is the fact that solar energy is an environmentally sustainable alternative. A four-wing compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) was designed as a modification of the regular non-imaging CPC concentrator that has a widespread use as solar collector. The design is intended to increase the angle of acceptance as well as concentration of energy from the sun. The conceptual design, mathematical formulation as well as construction and initial trial results have been presented in this paper. Pilot trials of the four-wing concentrator used for sanitizing both liquid and waste products produced satisfactory results. Improvements in terms of design as well as material used for construction and better preservation of heat can be considered further in the future research.

A method for solving systems of linear equations is presented based on direct decomposition of the coefficient matrix using the form LAX = LB = B’ . Elements of the reducing lower triangular matrix L can be determined using either row wise or column wise operations and are demonstrated to be sums of permutation products of the Gauss pivot row multipliers. These sums of permutation products can be constructed using a tree structure that can be easily memorized or alternatively computed using matrix products. The method requires only storage of the L matrix which is half in size compared to storage of the elements in the LU decomposition. Equivalence of the proposed method with both the Gauss elimination and LU decomposition is also shown in this paper.

There are many possible sources of ground water contamination and may include wastes from industrial chemical production, domestic wastewater and pesticide run off from agricultural lands. The groundwater is thus susceptible to chemical, physical and/or microbiological contamination and ultimately becomes a cause for diverse diseases borne from the contaminated water. It has been a common practice to cultivate vegetables, crops and animal feed grasses around Asmara using sewage and industrial effluents and there are likelihoods that contaminants in the wastewater used for irrigation would infiltrate to the nearby wells. It is believed that the groundwater around the wastewater irrigated area is not safe for domestic and agricultural applications. Thus, this study was conducted to evaluate the quality of the groundwater in order to safeguard the public health treats caused by using this water. Samples were collected from five locations around Mai-Bella and thus different physico-chemical parameters were investigated. The pH of the samples was measured by pH metric method;electrical conductivity (EC) and salinity by using conductometric method. Hardness was estimated by EDTA method;total alkalinity (TA) and bicarbonate concentrations by titrimetric methods. Chloride concentration was analyzed by titration against mercurial nitrate. Na and K were determined using flame photometric method. Fe, Mn, nitrate, nitrite, sulphates and ammonia were determined using spectrophotometric method. Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) was determined using photometric method. Moreover, the concentrations of trace, major and heavy metals were analysed using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrophotometer (ICP-OES). The suitability of the groundwater for domestic and irrigation purposes was examined using WHO and FAO standards. Most of the physico-chemical parameters, except the temperature, pH, COD, Al, Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn, of the samples were found above the standard limits given
