Reproductive ecology of the seabob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri(Heller,1862)in a coastal area of Southern Brazil

The predictability of certain environmental factors that affect the life cycle of the seabob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri(Heller,1862) was evaluated in a study of its reproductive biology in an area adjacent to Babitonga Bay,State of Santa Catarina,Brazil. Monthly sampling was conducted from July 2010 through June 2011 at depths of 5,8,11,14,and 17 m.76 004 individuals were obtained,with a pronounced peak in absolute abundance in austral autumn(34 208),coinciding with the annual closed season from March to May. Grain size composition of the sediment showed the closest relationship to the distribution of individuals(multiple linear regression,P <0.05),related to their burying habit. The observed correlations between the abundance of reproductive males(bearing spermatophores) and females with spent gonads(cross-correlation,P <0.05),and between reproductive males and reproductive females(with a 1-month lag) suggest that the peak of reproductive males preceded the peak offemale ones. This result agrees with the pattern expected for females,which copulate in post-ecdysis(spent gonads). Spawning seemed to take place at greater depths,as evidenced by the concentration of reproductive females in these areas. The reproductive activities observed here confirm that this species follows a tropical/subtropical reproductive pattern,spawning continuously throughout the year,with the highest peaks in spring and autumn. The data indicate that the juvenile recruitment period observed in August-September resulted from the reproductive output noted in April–May. Additionally,the reproductive period recorded in November led to the juvenile peak observed in March–May.

Early detection of infected asymptomatic plants could prevent the dissemination of tomatobacterial canker throughout the crop and, thus, reduce associated economic losses. Reflectance spectroscopy has been proposed for the detection of diseases in plants, mainlycaused by foliar fungal pathogens. In contrast, bacterial canker is a vascular disease thatdoes not produce visible foliar symptoms until it is too late to avoid contagion to otherplants. The effects of the disease on the conductivity of the xylem have an impact onthe water content of the leaves;initially, a subtle effect that cannot be assessed with thenaked eye but can be evaluated by reflectance spectroscopy. The objective of this workwas to identify indices, based on the reflectance spectral signature of the plants, for thedetection of tomato plants affected by bacterial canker prior to the appearance of symptoms. To verify that the proposed methodology is applicable to a broad range of tomatogenotypes, two experiments were carried out with different tomato cultivars grown in potsand another on the ground in a greenhouse. Plants were inoculated with the pathogenicbacteria and the reflectance spectrum of the apical leaflet of two leaves per plant wereobtained before symptoms expression;several spectral indices were calculated from thereflectance spectra. Three indices, of the shortwave-infrared zone, allowed the detectionof bacterial canker inoculated plants in a fast and non-destructive way, up to one weekbefore symptoms were visible: Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), Simple Ratioof Water Index (SRWI) and Water Index 1 180 (WI1180). Our research demonstrates, forthe first time, the usefulness of spectral indices sensitive to water content for the identifi-cation of diseased plants. These indices arise as a promising tool for the early detection ofvascular plant diseases, that could be integrated into sustainable management plans.

Jejunoileal diverticula are rare and generally asymptomatic. In the few cases of patients who develop complications such as diverticulitis, perforation, obstruction, and/or hemorrhage, conventional treatment consists of surgical resection. We describe a case of perforated jejunoileal diverticulum with localized abscess and highlight the merits of surgical vs medical management. The patient is a 77-year-old male who presented with sharp, constant abdominal pain just inferior to the umbilicus. Administration of intravenous antibiotics results in complete and long-term resolution of the patient’s symptoms. In this report, we establish a framework for safely treating perforated small bowel diverticulum without surgical exploration.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2(SARS-CoV-2) infection can progress to a severe respiratory and systemic disease named coronavirus disease–2019(COVID-19). The most common symptoms are fever and respiratory discomfort. Nevertheless, gastrointestinal infections have been reported, with symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and lack of appetite. Importantly, SARS-CoV-2 can remain positive in fecal samples after nasopharyngeal clearance. After gastrointestinal SARS-CoV-2 infection and other viral gastrointestinal infections, some patients may develop alterations in the gastrointestinal microbiota. In addition, some COVID-19 patients may receive antibiotics, which may also disturb gastrointestinal homeostasis. In summary, the gastrointestinal system, gut microbiome, and gut-lung axis may represent an important role in the development, severity, and treatment of COVID-19. Therefore, in this review, we explore the current pieces of evidence of COVID-19 gastrointestinal manifestations, possible implications, and interventions.

The estimates of global incidence and prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) are worrisome, due to the parallel burden of obesity and its metabolic complications. Indeed, excess adiposity and insulin resistance represent two of the major risk factors for NAFLD; interestingly, in the last years a growing body of evidence tended to support a novel mechanistic perspective, in which the liver is at the center of a complex interplay involving organs and systems, other than adipose tissue and glucose homeostasis. Bone and the skeletal muscle are fat- free tissues which appeared to be independently associated with NAFLD in several cross-sectional studies. The deterioration of bone mineral density and lean body mass, leading to osteoporosis and sarcopenia, respectively, are age-related processes. The prevalence of NAFLD also increases with age. Beyond physiological aging, the three conditions share some common underlying mechanisms, and their elucidations could be of paramount importance to design more effective treatment strategies for the management of NAFLD. In this review, we provide an overview on epidemiological data as well as on potential contributors to the connections of NAFLD with bone and skeletal muscle.

Neurotrophins are a family of proteins that support neuronal proliferation, survival, and differentiation in the central and peripheral nervous systems, and are regulators of neuronal plasticity. Nerve growth factor is one of the best-described neurotrophins and has advanced to clinical trials for treatment of ocular and brain diseases due to its trophic and regenerative properties. Prior trials over the past few decades have produced conflicting results, which have principally been ascribed to adverse effects of systemic nerve growth factor administration, together with poor penetrance of the blood-brain barrier that impairs drug delivery. Contrastingly, recent studies have revealed that topical ocular and intranasal nerve growth factor administration are safe and effective, suggesting that topical nerve growth factor delivery is a potential alternative to both systemic and invasive intracerebral delivery. The therapeutic effects of local nerve growth factor delivery have been extensively investigated for different ophthalmic diseases, including neurotrophic keratitis, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, and dry eye disease. Further, promising pharmacologic effects were reported in an optic glioma model, which indicated that topically administered nerve growth factor diffused far beyond where it was topically applied. These findings support the therapeutic potential of delivering topical nerve growth factor preparations intranasally for acquired and degenerative brain disorders. Preliminary clinical findings in both traumatic and non-traumatic acquired brain injuries are encouraging, especially in pediatric patients, and clinical trials are ongoing. The present review will focus on the therapeutic effects of both ocular and intranasal nerve growth factor delivery for diseases of the brain and eye.

Glioblastoma(GBM) is one of the deadliest tumors and has a median survival of 3 months if left untreated. Despite advances in rationally targeted pharmacological approaches, the clinical care of GBM remains palliative in intent. Since the majority of altered signaling cascades involved in cancer establishment and progression eventually affect cell cycle progression, an alternative approach for cancer therapy is to develop innovative compounds that block the activity of crucial molecules needed by tumor cells to complete cell division. In this context, we review promising ongoing and future strategies for GBM therapeutics aimed towards G2/M inhibition such as anti-microtubule agents and targeted therapy against G2/M regulators like cyclin-dependent kinases,Aurora inhibitors, PLK1, BUB, 1, and BUBR1, and survivin. Moreover, we also include investigational agents in the preclinical and early clinical settings. Although several drugs were shown to be gliotoxic, most of them have not yet entered therapeutic trials. The use of either single exposure or a combination with novel compounds may lead to treatment alternatives for GBM patients in the near future.

Over the past century,age-related diseases,such as cancer,type-2 diabetes,obesity,and mental illness,have shown a significant increase,negatively impacting overall quality of *** on aged animal models have unveiled a progressive discoordination at multiple regulatory levels,including transcriptional,translational,and post-translational processes,resulting from cellular stress and circadian *** circadian clock emerges as a key regulator,sustaining physiological homeostasis and promoting healthy aging through timely molecular coordination of pivotal cellular processes,such as stem-cell function,cellular stress responses,and inter-tissue communication,which become disrupted during *** the crucial role of hypothalamic circuits in regulating organismal physiology,metabolic control,sleep homeostasis,and circadian rhythms,and their dependence on these processes,strategies aimed at enhancing hypothalamic and circadian function,including pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches,offer systemic benefits for healthy *** brain-directed drug administration represents a promising avenue for effectively targeting specific brain regions,like the hypothalamus,while reducing side effects associated with systemic drug delivery,thereby presenting new therapeutic possibilities for diverse age-related conditions.
