Root distribution in the soil determines plants’nutrient and water uptake capacity.Therefore,root distribution is one of the most important factors in crop production.The trench profile method is used to observe the root distribution underground by making a rectangular hole close to the crop,providing informative images of the root distribution compared to other root phenotyping methods.however,much effort is required to segment the root area for quantification.In this study,we present a promising approach employing a convolutional neural network for root segmentation in trench profile images.We defined two parameters,Depth50 and Width50,representing the vertical and horizontal centroid of root distribution,respectively.Quantified parameters for root distribution in rice(Oryza sativa L.)predicted by the trained model were highly correlated with parameters calculated by manual tracing.These results indicated that this approach is useful for rapid quantification of the root distribution from the trench profile images.Using the trained model,we quantified the root distribution parameters among 60 rice accessions,revealing the phenotypic diversity of root distributions.We conclude that employing the trench profile method and a convolutional neural network is reliable for root phenotyping and it will furthermore facilitate the study of crop roots in the field.

Background: We have been performing a canalith repositioning procedure for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. When we adopted the Epley maneuver for posterior semicircular canal type, and affected-ear-up 90° maneuver for lateral semicircular canal type, we noticed that no nystagmus occurred in the sitting position just after treatment. Despite direct excitation to the utricle by the pathological debris, none of the subjects complained of dizziness. Thus, we hypothesized that nystagmus and dizziness do not occur by stimulation of the otolith organs. Objective: The aim of the study was to observe and record the eye movements induced by the otolith organs to confirm our hypothesis. Materials and Methods: Twelve healthy humans were tested. In the sitting position, the head was tilted to the right ear by 45° and vice versa. Afterward, the head was bent forward by 90° (nose-down), and the subject’s seat was reclined to the head-hanging position. Each position was kept for five seconds. We interviewed the subjects to assess their dizziness. Results: None of the subjects showed nystagmus and complained of dizziness in every position. Conclusions: Nystagmus does not occur by the stimulation to the otolith organs;therefore, ocular counter-rolling is a semicircular canal ocular reflex.

Understanding the flame structure for different combustion in industries has drawn the increasing attention around the world.Particularly,for increasing the recent interest of using the hydrogen fuelled vehicles in recent world,structural analysis of flame in combustion chamber has attracted the attention of researchers.however,the high flame temperature and strong flame emissions increase the experimental difficulties,especially,in all kinds of intrusive measurement systems for determining the flame structures and flame temperatures.Therefore,a non-intrusive laser interferometer technique based on Shack-hartmann optical system has been proposed to measure the thermal characteristic of a flame structure.In the present study,a low-stretched diffusion flame of methanol burner has been used.Shack-hartmann optical system is a type of wave front sensor.It is commonly used in adaptive optical systems.It consists of an array of lenses to focus the image onto a photon sensor (photo-detector) at the focal plane and measures the wave front tilt.The major objective of the present study is to develop a laser interferometer measurement technique for analyzing the flame structure and its temperature propagation by measuring the density gradient of the flame.Optical interferometer technique is a potential candidate for the non-invasive measurement.In the present paper,a novel method for the measurement of density gradient in flame by using Shack-hartmann optical system is proposed.A collimated laser beam that has been passed through the flame is tilted due to the density gradient inside the flame.A CCD camera (CCD photo sensor) has been used to observe the wave front tilts at the focal plane.

After B'enard's experiment in 1900,Rayleigh formulated heat convection problems by the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation in the horizontal strip domain in 1916.The pattern formations have been investigated by the bifurcation theory,weakly nonlinear theories and computational approaches.The boundary conditions for the velocity on the upper and lower boundaries are usually assumed as stress-free or no-slip.In the first part of this paper,some bifurcation pictures for the case of the stress-free on the upper boundary and the no-slip on the lower boundary are obtained.In the second part of this paper,the bifurcation pictures for the case of the stress-free on both boundaries by a computer assisted proof are verified.At last,B'enard-Marangoni heat convections for the case of the free surface of the upper boundary are considered.

In recent years,the serrated neoplasia pathway where serrated polyps arise as a colorectal cancer has gained considerable attention as a new carcinogenic pathway.Colorectal serrated polyps are histopathologically classified into hyperplastic polyps(hPs),sessile serrated lesions,and traditional serrated adenomas;in the serrated neoplasia pathway,the latter two are considered to be premalignant.In western countries,all colorectal polyps,including serrated polyps,apart from diminutive rectosigmoid hPs are removed.however,in Asian countries,the treatment strategy for colorectal serrated polyps has remained unestablished.Therefore,in this review,we described the clinicopathological features of colorectal serrated polyps and proposed to remove hPs and sessile serrated lesions≥6 mm in size,and traditional serrated adenomas of any size.

Effective use of the Japan Narrow Band Imaging Expert Team classification based on diagnostic performance and confidence level

Five years have passed since the Japan Narrow Band Imaging Expert Team (JNET) classification was proposed in 2014. however, the diagnostic performance of this classification has not yet been established. We conducted a retrospective study and a systematic search of Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System On-Line. There were three retrospective single center studies about the diagnostic performance of this classification. In order to clarify this issue, we reviewed our study and three previous studies. This review revealed the diagnostic performance in regards to three important differentiations.(1) Neoplasia from non-neoplasia;(2) malignant neoplasia from benign neoplasia;and (3) deep submucosal invasive cancer (D-SMC) from other neoplasia. The sensitivity in differentiating neoplasia from non-neoplasia was 98.1%-99.8%. The specificity in differentiating malignant neoplasia from benign neoplasia was 84.7%-98.2% and the specificity in the differentiation D-SMC from other neoplasia was 99.8%-100.0%. This classification would enable endoscopists to identify almost all neoplasia, to appropriately determine whether to perform en bloc resection or not, and to avoid unnecessary surgery. This article is the first review about the diagnostic performance of the JNET classification. Previous reports about the diagnostic performance have all been retrospective single center studies. A large-scale prospective multicenter evaluation study is awaited for the validation.

This study was conducted in order to examine the influence of long-term volcanic activity on vegetative succession and growth on the slope of Sakurajima in southern Kyushu, Japan. We investigated the vegetation,depth of the volcanic ash layer, and dry density and p h of the surface soil at six places on the north-northwestern slope, 2.3–3.4 km from the Minami-dake crater, where a layer of pumice stone was deposited by the Taisho eruption in 1914. The height and diameter at breast height（DBh） of the trees increased with increasing distance from the Minami-dake crater, as did the number of individuals and species, and basal area. The Shannon–Wiener diversity index（h＇） demonstrates that vegetative succession is significantly affected by distance from the Minami-dake crater, as areas farther from the crater exhibited later seral stages. Comparison of the diversity index and species number of the crater region with that of the climax forest in Kagoshima indicates that vegetative growth alone cannot advance succession in the study area, as the local vegetative community is heavily influenced by the harsh environmental conditions associated with continual exposure to long-term volcanic activity. Seral stage, ash layer depth,dry density, and p h of the soil surface layer are governed by distance from the Minami-dake crater. The results of this study indicate that conditions for vegetative growth and succession improve with increasing distance from the source of constant volcanic activity. Thus, soil development is promoted by the acidification of the soil, which decreases the dry density and p h of the soil surface layer.The introduction of plant species resistant to volcanic ash and gas is recommended to promote soil development and improve the infiltration capacity of the soil.
