Role of Oxidative Stress in Non-genotoxic Carcinogenesis with Special Reference to Liver Tumors Induced by Peroxisome Proliferators

Peroxisome proliferators (POPs), such as hypolipidemic drugs or industrial phthalate ester plasticizers, are widely known as non-genotoxic hepatocarcinogens in rodents. As one of the possible mechanisms of POP-induced carcinogenesis, the 'Oxidative Stress' theory has been postulated. In this review, in order to reconsider the significance of 'Oxidative Stress' to POP-induced carcinogenesis, we focus on in vivo studies examining formation of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OH -dG), a marker of oxidative DNA damage with mutagenic potential, after treatment of rodents with POPs. Some studies clearly demonstrated that 8-OH-dG levels in the liver DNA were increased by POP-treatments. These findings suggest that 'Oxidative Stress' could contribute as one factor to POP-induced carcinogenesis. Furthermore, we refer to other multiple biological changes caused by POP-treatment presumably contributing to the carcinogenic mechanisms, and consider possible roles of 'Oxidative Stress' in the carcinogenesis process

Relationship between Landslides, Geologic Structures, and Hydrothermal Alteration Zones in the Ohekisawa-Shikerebembetsugawa Landslide Area, Hokkaido, Japan

This paper elucidates the relationship between landslides, geologic structures, and hydrothermal alteration zones based primarily on X-ray powder diffraction and uniaxial compressive strength tests on weakly weathered and hydrothermally altered rocks from the Ohekisawa-Shikerebembetsugawa landslide area in Teshikaga Town, Hokkaido, Japan. The OHS （Ohekisawa slide） occurred on a dip slope of sedimentary rocks from the Upper Miocene Shikerepe Formation within a homocline, and also on weathered and hydrothermally altered rocks within the boundary area between the hydrothermal smectite zone and smectite-bearing mordenite zone. The SHS （Shikerebembetsugawa slide） occurred on a dip slope of sedimentary rocks from the Upper Miocene Hanakushibe Formation within wavy folds and was also controlled by a cap rock of Teshikaga Volcano Somma Lava. The SHS occurred also on weathered and hydrothermally altered rocks within the boundary area between the hydrothermal smectite zone and smectite-bearing laumontite zone. The mechanical properties of smectite, smectite-bearing mordenite, and smectite-bearing laumontite zone weakly weathered rocks indicate that they are very weak, soft rocks. These landslides are regarded as HAZLs （hydrothermal alteration zone landslides）. The hydrothermal alteration yielding smectite is thus closely related to these two ancient landslides, suggesting that the potential for HAZLs within a hydrothermal area can be assessed based on the swelling clay mineral-beating hydrothermal alteration types, dip slope, and cap rock.

Unusual spontaneous improvement in Asian variant of intravascular large B-cell lymphoma

The clinical course of the Asian variant of intravascular large B-cell lymphoma (AIVL) is generally very aggressive. We describe a case of AIVL demonstrating an unusual clinical course, with spontaneous improvement. An 81-year-old man with high-grade fever and thrombocytopenia was admitted to our hospital. Although we could not confirm the origin of his symptoms, they disappeared completely without intervention within 2 weeks. Three months later, however, thrombocytopenia reappeared and progressed. Finally, he was readmitted due to a subdural hemorrhage with high fever and he finally died of rapidly progressive multiple organ failure. Autopsy findings revealed the presence of B-cell lymphoma cells in microscopic vessels of many organs as well as hemophagocytosis in the bone marrow. He was diagnosed with AIVL with an unusual indolent clinical course with spontaneous improvement.

Case of arterial hemorrhage after endoscopic papillary large balloon dilation for choledocholithiases using a covered self-expandable metallic stent

A 78-year-old male was admitted to our hospital because of *** demonstrated choledocholithiases with a maximum diameter of 13 mm, and we performed endoscopic papillary large balloon dilation(EPLBD) with a size of 15 *** following the balloon deflation, spurting hemorrhage occurred from the orifice of the duodenal *** we performed endoscopic hemostasis by compressing the bleeding point with the large balloon catheter, we could not achieve ***, we placed a 10 mm fully covered selfexpandable metallic stent(SEMS) across the duodenal papilla, and the hemorrhage stopped *** 1 wk of SEMS placement, duodenal endoscopy revealed ulcerative lesions in both the orifice of the duodenal papilla and the lower bile duct.A direct peroral cholangioscopy using an ultra-slim upper endoscope revealed a visible vessel with a longitudinal mucosal tear in the ulceration of the lower bile *** believe that the mucosal tear and subsequent ruptured vessel were caused by the EPLBD procedure.
