Implantable image sensors have the potential to revolutionize *** to their small form factor requirements;however,conventional filters and optics cannot be *** limitations obstruct highresolution imaging of large neural *** advances in angle-sensitive image sensors and single-photon avalanche diodes have provided a path toward ultrathin lens-less fluorescence imaging,enabling plenoptic sensing by extending sensing capabilities to include photon arrival time and incident angle,thereby providing the opportunity for separability of fluorescence point sources within the context of light-field microscopy(LFM).However,the addition of spectral sensitivity to angle-sensitive LFM reduces imager resolution because each wavelength requires a separate pixel ***,we present a 1024-pixel,50μm thick implantable shank-based neural imager with color-filtergrating-based angle-sensitive *** angular-spectral sensitive front end combines a metal–insulator–metal(MIM)Fabry–Perot color filter and diffractive optics to produce the measurement of orthogonal light-field information from two distinct colors within a single *** result is the ability to add independent color sensing to LFM while doubling the effective pixel *** implantable imager combines angular-spectral and temporal information to demix and localize multispectral fluorescent *** this initial prototype,this is demonstrated with 45μm diameter fluorescently labeled beads in scattering *** lifetime imaging is exploited to further aid source separation,in addition to detecting pH through lifetime changes in fluorescent *** these initial fluorescent targets are considerably brighter than fluorescently labeled neurons,further improvements will allow the application of these techniques to in-vivo multifluorescent structural and functional neural imaging.

Arthropods were sampled from feverfew [tanacetum parthenium （L.） Schultz- Bip], Echinacea purpurea （L.） Moench, Echinacea pallida （Nutt.） Nutt., Valeriana officinalis L., and St. John＇s wort （Hypericum perforatum L.） during 1998-2001. In addition, arthropods were sampled on tansy （tanacetum vulgare L.） from 2001-2004. In general, 50-60 arthropod species where collected and identified among all of the medicinal plant species. Among the predators, Orius insidiosus （Say）（Hemiptera： Anthocoridae）, Geocoris punctipes （Say）（Hemiptera： Lygaeidae） and spiders were most abundant from 1998-2004. the three-cornered alfalfa hopper, Spissistilus festinus （Say）, was the most abundant herbivore found from 1998 to 2001. Orius insidiosus and G. punctipes were 3-4 times more abundant on t. parthenium than on any other medicinal plant species. Based on the numbers of predatory arthropods found on t. parthenium, this crop could be suitable as a companion or ＂banker＂ plant to attract and maintain populations of predators, especially O. insidiosus and G. punctipes. Whitefly nymphs attacked by predators with piercing/sucking mouthparts are easily identified using a microscope because of the general appearance of the carcass left by the predators. thus, populations of predators on t. parthenium suppressed Bemisia tabaci populations on E. purpurea when these crops were planted as companion crops.

Although the clinical manifestations of alcoholic liver disease are well-described, little is known about the molecular basis of liver injury. Recent studies have indicated that ethanol exposure induces global protein hyperacetylation. this reversible, posttranslational modification on the ε-amino groups of lysine residues has been shown to modulate multiple, diverse cellular processes ranging from transcriptional activation to microtubule stability. thus, alcoholinduced protein hyperacetylation likely leads to major physiological consequences that contribute to alcohol-induced hepatotoxicity. Lysine acetylation is controlled by the activities of two opposing enzymes, histone acetyltransferases and histone deacetylases. Currently, efforts are aimed at determining which enzymes are responsible for the increased acetylation of specifi c substrates. However, the greater challenge will be to determine the physiological ramifications of protein hyperacetylation and how they might contribute to the progression of liver disease. In this review, we will fi rst list and discuss the proteins known to be hyperacetylated in the presence of ethanol. We will then describe what is known about the mechanisms leading to increased protein acetylation and how hyperacetylation may perturb hepatic function.

the hepatocyte cytoskeleton consists of three fi lamentous networks: microtubules, actin microfi laments and keratin intermediate filaments. Because of the abundance of the proteins that comprise each system and the central role each network plays in a variety of cellular processes, the three fi lament systems have been the focus of a host of studies aimed at understanding the progression of alcohol-induced liver injury. In this review, we will briefly discuss the hepatic organization of each cytoskeletal network and highlight some components of each system. We will also describe what is known about ethanol-induced changes in the dynamics and distributions of each cytoskeletal system and discuss what is known about changes in protein expression levels and post-translational modifi cations. Finally, we will describe the possible consequences of these cytoskeletal alterations on hepatocyte function and how they might contribute to the progression of liver disease.

Natural hazards and their related impacts can have powerful implications for humanity, particularly communities with deep reliance on natural resources. the development of effective early warning systems(EWS) can contribute to reducing natural hazard impacts on communities by improving risk reduction strategies and ***, current shortcomings in the conception and applications of EWS undermine risk reduction at the grassroots level. this article explores various pathways to involve local communities in EWS from top-down to more participatory approaches. Based on a literature review and three case studies that outline various levels of participation in EWS in Kenya, Hawai'i, and Sri Lanka, the article suggests a need to review the way EWS are designed and applied, promoting a shift from the traditional expert-driven approach to one that is embedded at the grassroots level and driven by the vulnerable communities. Such a community-centric approach also raises multiple challenges linked to a necessary shift of conception of EWS and highlights the need for more research on pathways for sustainable community engagement.

this article presents the findings of a historically-informed comparative study that juxtaposes the lives of three missionary educators in China in the early 20th century with three Christian educators in China *** sources included hundreds of letters from the women written in China to their families and friends over several decades and transcripts of over a dozen ***’s social theory of identity formation was used to analyze the data and address the questions of why they went to China,the intended and actual results,and the impact it had on the women and their identity *** findings show that although there were major differences across the two centuries,as was expected,there were surprisingly many similarities among the individual teachers,as are noted in the common communities of practice that emerged:“educator,”“missionary,”“gender advocate,”“Chinese advocate,”“leader,”and“learner.”
