In this article,we compare the properties of two coronal mass ejections(CMEs)that show similar source region characteristics but different evolutionary behaviors in the later *** discuss the two events in terms of their near-Sun characteristics,interplanetary evolution and *** carefully analyzed the initiation and propagation parameters of these events to establish the precise CMEinterplanetary CME(ICME)connection and their near-Earth *** first event is associated with poor geomagnetic storm disturbance index(Dst≈-20 n t)while the second event is associated with an intense geomagnetic storm of DSt≈-119 n *** configuration of the sunspots in the active regions and their evolution are observed by Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager(HMI).For source region imaging,we rely on data obtained from Atmospheric Imaging Assembly(AIA)on board Solar Dynamics Observatory(SDO)and Hαfiltergrams from the Solar tower telescope at Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences(ARIES).For both the CMEs,flux rope eruptions from the source region triggered flares of similar intensities(≈M1).At the solar source region of the eruptions,we observed a circular ribbon flare(CRF)for both cases,suggesting fan-spine magnetic configuration in the active region *** multi-channel SDO observations confirm that the eruptive flares and subsequent CMEs were intimately related to the filament *** the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronograph(LASCO)field of view(FOV)the two CMEs propagated with linear speeds of 671 and 631 km s-1,*** CMEs were tracked up to the Earth by Solar terrestrial Relations Observatory(StEREO)*** find that the source region evolution of CMEs,guided by the large-scale coronal magnetic field configuration,along with near-Sun propagation characteristics,such as CME-CME interactions,played important roles in deciding the evolution of CMEs in the interplanetary medium and subsequently their geoeffec

AIM:to study the potential association between hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)in patients with chronic hepatitis C(CHC),cirrhosis and latent hepatitis B(LHB)infection,defined as the absence of detectable serum hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsAg)and the presence of hepatitis B core antibody(HBcAb).MEtHODS:this retrospective analysis is comprised of 185 cirrhotic patients with HCC who were hepatitis C virus antibody(HCV Ab)(+)and HBsAg(-)at Wayne State University between 1999 and *** these,108 patients had HCV polymerase chain reaction confirmation of viremia while the remaining(77)were considered to have CHC on the basis of a positive HCV Ab and the absence of any other cause of liver *** were drawn from our institutional database from the same time period and consisted of 356 HBsAg(-)age,race and gender matched patients with HCV RNA-confirmed CHC and without evidence of HCC.A subgroup of controls included 118matched patients with liver cirrhosis.χ2test and t test were used for data ***:Seventy-seven percent of patients in all3 groups were African *** with HCC had a significantly higher body mass index(P=0.03),a higher rate of co-infection with human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)(P=0.05)and a higher prevalence of alcohol abuse(P=0.03)than the *** patients with HCC had LHB than controls(78%vs39%,P=0.01).Sixty three percent of patients with HCC were both hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsAb)(-)and HBcAb(+)compared to 23%of controls(Pto cirrhotic controls,the frequency of HBcAb(+)remained higher in patients with HCC(78%vs 45%,P=0.02).Patients with HCC were more likely to be both HBsAb(-)and HBcAb(+)than the cirrhotic controls(63%vs 28%,P=0.01).Although not statistically significant,100%of CHC and HIV coinfected patients with HCC(n=11)were HBcAb(+)when compared to controls(44%;n=9).CONCLUSION:these data suggest that LHB occurs at a significantly increased frequency in patients with CHC and HCC than in

Interactive effects of multiple environmental stresses are predicted to have a negative effect on cotton growth and development and these effects will be exacerbated in the future climate. the objectives of this study were to test the hypothesis that cotton cultivars differ in their responses to multiple environmental factors of （CO2） [400 and 750 μ*** 1 （＋（CO2）], temperature [28/20 and 20/12℃ （-t）], and UV-B radiation [0 and 10 kJ. m2. d ^-1（＋ UV- B）]. A genetic and molecular standard （tM-1） and three modern cotton cultivars （DP1522B2XE PHY496W3R, and St4747GLB2） were grown in eight sunlit, controlled environment chambers with control treatment 400 μ***^-1 [CO2], 28/21℃ temperature, and 0 kJ UV B. the results showed significant differences among the cultivars for most of the shoot and root parameters. Plants grown under low temperature alone or as a combination with ＋ UV B treatment caused more detrimental effects on root and shoot vigor. Although the elevated CO2 treatments weakened the damaging effects of higher UV-B levels on cotton growth on all cultivars, increased CO2 could not mask the negative effects of low temperature. When comparing all cultivars, genetic standard tM-1 produced the smallest values for the majority of traits under CO2, UV-B, and low temperature either alone or in combination with other treatments. Based on principal component analysis, the four cultivars were classified as tolerant （DP1522B2XF）, intermediate （PHY496W3R and St4747GLB2） and sensitive （tM-1） to multiple environmental *** temperature was identified as the most damaging treatment to cotton early seedling vigor while elevated CO2 caused the least. Existing variability of cotton cultivars in response tomultiple environmental stresses could allow for selection of cultivars with the best coping ability and higher lint yield for future climate change environments.

Laparoscopic vs open partial colectomy in elderly patients:Insights from the American College of Surgeons- National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database

AIM: to compare the outcomes between the laparoscopic and open approaches for partial colectomy in elderly patients aged 65 years and over using the American College of Surgeons- National Surgical Quality Improvement Program(ACS NSQIP) database. MEtHODS: the ACS NSQIP database for the years 2005-2011 was queried for all patients 65 years and above who underwent partial colectomy. 1:1 propensity score matching using the nearest- neighbor method was performed to ensure both groups had similar preoperative comorbidities. Outcomes including postoperative complications, length of stay and mortality were compared between the laparoscopic and open groups. χ2 and Fisher's exact test were used for discrete variables and Student's t-test for continuous variables. P t and odds ratios with 95%CI were reported when applicable. RESULtS: the total number of patients in the ACS NSQIP database of the years 2005-2011 was 1777035. We identified 27604 elderly patients who underwent partial colectomy with complete data sets. 12009(43%) of the cases were done laparoscopically and15595(57%) were done with open. After propensity score matching, there were 11008 patients each in the laparoscopic(LC) and open colectomy(OC) cohorts. the laparoscopic approach had lower post-operative complications(LC 15.2%, OC 23.8%, P ter length of stay(LC 6.61 d, OC 9.62 d, P tality(LC 1.6%, OC 2.9%, P ter propensity score matching, elderly patients in the ACS NSQIP database having a laparoscopic partial colectomy had better outcomes than those having open colectomies. In the absence of specific contraindications, elderly patients requiring a partial colectomy should be offered the laparoscopic approach.

Objectives: Cardiovascular risk factors for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) are on rise in people of Indian origin. Moreover, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) is higher in populations with ACS than in the general population. thus, the aim of the study was to evaluate the cardiovascular risk factor profile of patients presenting with acute coronary syndrome and to study the prevalence and impact of metabolic syndrome in patients with acute coronary syndrome by using South Asian modified National cholesterol Education Program Adult treatment Panel III definition. Methods: this study was conducted between October, 2010 and March, 2011 at Government General Hospital, Kurnool, India. A total of 100 patients with St or non-St segment elevation ACS and who had clinical, electrocardiographic and biochemical diagnosis within the first 24 hrs of clinical onset were enrolled in the study. the enrolled subjects were divided into two groups: those with MS and those without MS. Cardiovascular risk factors defined by components of MS were evaluated. Analysis was performed using SPSS software. Results: Sixty patients had MS along with ACS and 40 patients had ACS without MS. the most prevalent component of MS was increased waist circumference (83.3%), followed by increased triglycerides (78.3%) and increased fasting blood sugar (76.7%). Majority of patients (58.3%) had presence of three components of MS. Conclusion: the MS is a highly prevalent condition among the patients with ACS and is associated with severe coronary artery disease. the identification of MS imparts a high risk status to the patient in developing cardiovascular disease but at the same time provides abundant opportunities for intervention. Hence it is of paramount importance to aim for stricter goals and lower cut offs for intervention at all levels of prevention: primordial, primary and secondary.

the United States continues to be the largest corn producer in the world. How to maximize corn yield and at the same time reduce greenhouse gas emissions, is becoming a challenging effort for growers and researchers. As a result, our understanding of the responses of soil CO2 and CH4 fluxes to agricultural practices in cornfields is still limited. We conducted a 3-yr cornfield experiment to study the responses of soil CO2 and CH4 fluxes to various agricultural practices in middle tennessee. the agricultural practices included no-tillage + regular applications of urea ammonium nitrate (Nt-URAN);no-tillage + regular applications of URAN + denitrification inhibitor (Nt-inhi- bitor);no-tillage + regular applications of URAN + biochar (Nt-biochar);no-tillage + 20% applications of URAN + chicken litter (Nt-litter);no-tillage + split applications of URAN (Nt-split);and conventional tillage + regular applications of URAN as a control (Ct-URAN). A randomized complete block design was used with six replications. the same amount of fertilizer equivalent to 217 kg·N·ha-1 was applied to all of the experimental plots. the results showed that improved fertilizer and soil management, except the Nt-biochar treatment significantly increased soil CO2 flux as compared to the conventional tillage (Ct-URAN, 487.05 mg CO2 m-2·h-1). Soil CO2 flux increased exponentially with soil temperature (t 2 flux tended to be positively related to corn yield and/or soil moisture. Soil CH4 flux increased linearly with soil moisture in all treatments. Improved fertilizer and soil management did not alter soil CH4 flux, but significantly affected its moisture sensitivity. Our results indicated that agricultural practices enhancing corn yield may also result in a net increase in carbon emissions from soil, hence reducing the potential of carbon sequestration in croplands.
