Epidemiology of work-related hand and wrist injuries in a referral center: A descriptive study

BACkGROUND Occupational hand and wrist injuries(OHWIs)account for 25%of work-related accidents in low-and middle-income *** Colombia,more than 500000 occupational accidents occurred in 2021,and although the rate declined to less than 5%in 2020 and 2021,at least one in four accidents involved a hand or wrist *** to describe the OHWIs in workers seen at the emergency room at a second-level hospital in *** An observational study was performed using data from workers who experienced OHWIs and attended a second-level hospital,between June,2020 and may,*** overall frequency of OHWIs,as well as their distribution by sociodemo-graphic,clinical,and occupational variables,are ***,association patterns between sex,anatomical area(fingers,hand,wrist),and type of job were analyz.d by correspondence analysis(CA).RESULtS there were 2.101 workers treated for occupational accidents,423(20.3%)were cases of OHWIs,which mainly affected men(93.9%)with a median age of 31 years and who worked mainly in mining(75.9%).OHWIs were more common in the right upper extremity(55.3%)and comprised different types of injuries,such as contusion(42.1%),laceration(27.9%),fracture(18.7%),and crush injury(15.6%).they primarily affected the phalanges(95.2%),especially those of the first finger(25.7%).the CAs showed associations between the injured anatomical area and the worker’s job that differed in men and women(explained variance>90%).CONCLUSION One out of five workers who suffered occupational accidents in Cundinamarca,Columbia had an OHWI,affecting mainly males employed in *** occupational profile is likely to lead to prolonged rehabilitation,and permanent functional *** results might be useful for adjusting preventive measures in cluster risk groups.

Biodegradable z.nc-iron alloys: Complex study of corrosion behavior,mechanical properties and hemocompatibility

z.-Fe alloys have been extensively investigated in this study with a view to their application as biodegradable bone implants. Biogenic element z.nc is a very appropriate metal because of the ideal degradation rate compared to those of mg and Fe. Studied alloys were made by compressing metallic powders in a content ratio of 100% z.,z.-1% Fe, z.-2% Fe, z.-5% Fe and z.-10% Fe and sintering at 350°C for 1 h. Prepared samples were examined by optical microscopy, SEm and XRD. Corrosion behavior, mechanical testing and hemocompatibility were observed subsequently. the electrochemical performance of such materials was studied in the simulated body fluids. the enhanced corrosion rate was observed for all samples after iron addition due to the micro-galvanic effect between the pure z. and z.;Fe intermetallic phase. the corrosion rate of the z.-5% Fe alloyed sample was more than 20-times higher（2.89 mmpy） compared to the pure z.. However, alloying with more than 5 wt %of iron diminished the mechanical performance of the material. therefore, the performed mechanical and hemocompatibility tests showed acceptable biocompatibility of z.nc and z.-1% Fe and z.-2% Fe samples.

Biodegradable wires,able to provide load-bearing support for various biomedical applications,are the novel trends in current biomaterial research.A thin 99.92%mg wire with a diameter of 250μm was prepared via direct extrusion with an extreme reduction ratio of 1:*** total imposed strain in a single processing step was *** was carried out at elevated temperatures in the range from 230 to 310℃and with various ram speeds ranging from^0.2 to^0.5 mm/*** resulting wires show very good mechanical properties which vary with extrusion *** true tensile stress at room temperature reaches^228 mPa and ductility reaches^13%.the proposed single-step direct extrusion can be an effective method for the production of mg wires in sufficient quantities for *** fractographic analysis revealed that failure of the wires may be closely connected with inclusions(e.g.,mg O particles).the results are essential for determining the optimal processing conditions of hot extrusion for thin mg *** smaller grain siz.,as the outcome of the lower extrusion temperature,is identified as the main parameter affecting the tensile properties of the wires.

Babesiosis is a tick-transmitted disease that causes severe economic losses to the cattle industry in Braz.l. Water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) are often carriers of Babesia spp., but there are no studies that provide an accurate estimation of this infection in animals raised in regions of endemic stability. this study was conducted to investigate Babesia bovis and B. bigemina infections in 108 water buffaloes (50 calves and 58 adult females) located in areas of São Paulo state, where the animals were continuously exposed to Rhipicephalus microplus ticks. B. bovis and B. bigemina infections were screened by microscopic examination of blood smears, nested PCR (nPCR) and quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR), which were also used to estimate the number of copies (NC) of the cytochrome b (mt-cytB) gene in the blood samples. B. bigemina was found in blood smears of three calves from Alambari herd (all with less than 0.1% parasitemia). molecular techniques were more sensitive than blood smears to diagnose piroplasms in water buffaloes: 20.37% and 100.00% for B. bovis-infected animals and 59.26% and 100.00% for B. bigemina-infected animals, respectively for nPCR and qPCR. the NC of mt-cytB gene of B. bovis and B. bigemina in blood samples revealed significant effects (p p ≤ 0.05) for B. bigemina (2.80 ± 0.06) than for B. bovis (2.61 ± 0.05). Within each herd-age, differences between the species’ NC values were found only in Alambari calves, which showed significantly higher (p ≤ 0.05) NC of B. bigemina (3.48 ± 0.13). the calves and cows from Ibaté showed the lowest NC of B. bigemina (2.29 ± 0.13 and 2.63 ± 0.14) and B. bovis (2.54 ± 0.11 and 2.37 ± 0.12), respectively. these data suggest a high prevalence of B. bovis and B. bigemina infection in the buffalo population in endemic areas of São Paulo state.

Effect of herpesvirus infection on pancreatic duct cell secretion

AIm： to examine the effect of acute infection caused by herpesvirus （pseudorabies virus, PRV） on pancreatic ductal secretion. mEtHODS： the virulent Ba-DupGreen （BDG） and non- virulent ka-RREp01acgfp （kEG） genetically modified strains of PRV were used in this study and both of them contain the gene for green fluorescent protein （GFP）. Small intra/ interlobular ducts were infected with BDG virus （10^7 PFU/mL for 6 h） or with kEG virus （10^10 PFU/mL for 6 h）, while non-infected ducts were incubated only with the culture media. the ducts were then cultured for a further 18 h. the rate of HCO3 secretion [base efflux -λ（B）] was determined from the buffering capacity of the cells and the initial rate of intracellular acidification （1） after sudden blockage of basolateral base loaders with dihydro-4,4,- diisothiocyanatostilbene-2,2,-disulfonic acid （500 μmol/L） and amiloride （200 μmol/L）, and （2） after alkali loading the ducts by exposure to NH4Cl. All the experiments were performed in HCO3-buffered Ringer solution at 37 ℃ （n = 5 ducts for each experimental condition）. Viral structural proteins were visualiz.d by immunohistochemistry. Virallyencoded GFP and immunofluorescence signals were recorded by a confocal laser scanning microscope.RESULtS： the BDG virus infected the majority of accessible cells of the duct as judged by the appearance of GFP and viral anUgens in the ductal cells. kEG virus caused a similarly high efficiency of infection. After blockage of basolateral base loaders, BDG infection significantly elevated -λB-） 24 h after the infection, compared to the non-infected group. However, kEG infection did not modify -λB-）. After alkali loading the ducts, -λB-） was significantly elevated in the BDG group compared to the control group 24 h after the infection. Electrocardiographic measures of repolariz.tion dispersion and their relationships with echocardiographic indices of ventricular remodeling and premature ventricular beats in hypertension

Objective to examine the relationship between tpeak- tend interval （tpe） and tpe/Qt ratio with occurrence of ventricular premature beats （VPBs） and left ventricular remodeling in hypertension. methods A total of 52 patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension were included, undergoing echocardiography and 24-hours Holter monitoring. Ventricular remodeling was assessed by left ventricular mass index （LVmI） using the Devereux formula and diastolic fimction by transmitral E and A wave velocities and E/A ratio. tpe was measured in the precordial leads. the end of the t wave was set by the method of the tangent to the steepest descending slope of the t wave. Results tpe and tpe/Qt in leads V2 （r = 0.33, P = 0.01; r = 0.27, P = 0.04 respectively） and V3 （r = 0.40, P = 0.002; r = 0.40, P = 0.003, respectively） correlated significantly with LVmI. A significant inverse relationship was observed between E/A ratio and Qt （r = -0.33, P = 0.01）, tpe in V3 （r = -0.39, P = 0.003） and tpe/Qt in V3 （r = -0.31, P = 0.02）. tpe in V3, V5, mean tpe and maximum tpe with cut-offvalues of 60 ms, 59 ms, 62 ms and 71 ms, respectively, associated with the occurrence of ventricular premature beats. Conclusions the repolariz.tion parameters tpe interval and tpe/Qt ratio correlate with LVmI and indices of left ventricular diastolic function and show better predictive values than traditional parameters such as Qt interval and Qt dispersion. Lead V3 is the best lead for measuring tpe and tpe/Qt. these ECG indices can therefore be used in clinical practice to monitor LV remodeling and predict occurrence of VPBs.
