Emissions from the combustion of eucalypt and pine chips in a fluidized bed reactor

Interest in renewable energy sources has increased in recent years due to environmental concerns about global warming and air pollution,reduced costs and improved efficiency of *** the European Union（EU）energy directive,biomass is a suitable renewable *** aim of this study was to experimentally quantify and characterize the emission of particulate matter（PM（2.5））resulting from the combustion of two biomass fuels（chipped residual biomass from pine and eucalypt）,in a pilot-scale bubbling fluidized bed（BFB）combustor under distinct operating *** variables evaluated were the stoichiometry and,in the case of eucalypt,the leaching of the *** CO and PM（2.5）emission factors were lower when the stoichiometry used in the experiments was higher（0.33±0.1 g CO/kg and 16.8±1.0 mg PM（2.5）/kg,dry gases）.the treatment of the fuel by leaching before its combustion has shown to promote higher PM（2.5）emissions（55.2±2.5 mg/kg,as burned）.Organic and elemental carbon represented 3.1 to 30 wt.% of the particle mass,while carbonate（CO3^（2-））accounted for between 2.3 and 8.5 wt.%.the particulate mass was mainly composed of inorganic matter（71% to 86% of the PM（2.5）mass）.Compared to residential stoves,BFB combustion generated very high mass fractions of inorganic *** was the water soluble ion in higher concentration in the PM（2.5）emitted by the combustion of eucalypt,while calcium was the dominant water soluble ion in the case of pine.

this paper identifies a need to complement the current rich technical and mathematical research agenda on big data with a more information systems and information science strand, which focuses on the business value of big data. An agenda of research for information systems would explore motives for using big data in real organizational contexts, and consider proposed benefits, such as increased effectiveness and efficiency, production of high-quality products/services, creation of added business value, and stimulation of innovation and design. Impacts of such research on the academic community, the industrial and business world, and policy-makers are discussed.

the cryptic habits of subterranean termites restricts detailed analysis of their foraging patterns in situ, but the process is evidently dominated by tunnel constructions connecting the nest with woody resources discovered within the territory of each colony. In this study, tunnel formation and orientation were studied experimentally in the termite Reticulitermes grassei （Clement）, using 2-dimensional laboratory foraging arenas con- taining fine sand as the substratum. the building of exploratory tunnels over a 10-day period and the geometry of the resulting network are described. Fractal analysis showed that tunnel geometry had a fractal dimension, regardless of the total length tunnelled whether foragers encountered the food source or not. the bulk density of the sand in the arenas affected the distances tunnelled, with higher density reducing construction, but did not affect tunnel geometry. tunnels were not discernibly orientated with respect to the positioning of the food source, even in a situation where termites had failed to find the food source at a distance of less than 50 mm, suggesting that volatiles from wood are not attractants.

Structural and optical properties of pillared Eu^(3+)-containing layered double hydroxides intercalated by 2-to 12-carbon aliphatic dicarboxylates

While the versatile composition of layered double hydroxides(LDHs)allows the introduction of almost any polyvalent cation in their structure,the exchangeable negatively charged ions intercalated between the plates increase their vast range of *** we report on the preparation and optical properties of pillared Eu^(3+)-substituted ZnAl LDHs intercalated by aliphatic dicarboxylates:-OOC-(CH_(2))_(n-2)-COO-.the basal distance in these materials is dependent on the size and packing of the intercalated *** varying the number(n)of carbon atoms in the aliphatic chain from 2 to 12,the interlayer gallery of these ZnAlEu LDHs is considerably expanded from 0.9 to 2.1 *** the interlayer gallery,the aliphatic dicarboxylates form a monolayer,with the aliphatic chain inclined by an angleα≈63°with the hydroxide *** carbon atom in the COO-group is 0.43 nm far from the metal plane,showing that these carboxylates are not grafted in the brucite-like *** LDHs are thermally stable up to around 150℃,after which dehydroxylation of the hydroxide layers is *** Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters were obtained and compared to the Eu^(3+)-containing complexes with the same ligand series indicating a more symmetrical and less polarizable chemical environment around the rare earth ion.

this paper studied subspace properties of the Celis–Dennis–tapia(CDt)subproblem that arises in some trust-region algorithms for equality constrained opti*** analysis is an extension of that presented by Wang and Yuan(***.104:241–269,2006)for the standard trust-region *** suitable conditions,it is shown that the trial step obtained from the CDt subproblem is in the subspace spanned by all the gradient vectors of the objective function and of the constraints computed until the current *** on this observation,a subspace version of the Powell–Yuan trust-region algorithm is proposed for equality constrained optimization problems where the number of constraints is much lower than the number of variables. the convergence analysis is given and numerical results arealso reported.

Aims Riparian forests in the Brazilian Cerrado,also known as gallery forests,are very heterogeneous in structure,species composition and ecological features due to strong and abrupt variations of soil,hydrological and topographic ***,what are the variables driving forest carbon stock and productivity,mortality and recruitment in disturbed gallery forests?Methods We used 36 permanent plots data from a gallery forest in the Brazilian *** investigated how tree community dynam-ics vary in a gallery forest on two contrasting disturbance levels-logged and non-logged-across a topographic gradient intrinsically related to differences in moisture conditions,edge effects,as well as soil fertility and *** Findings Soil variables were reduced into principal components and we used structural equation modelling to disentangle covarying *** also included carbon stocks as a determinant variable of dynamics *** forest had 50%higher productivity than non-logged forest and streamside forest had aboveground carbon stocks 70%higher than the forest *** logging and natural disturbance drove variation in the carbon stocks which contributed to shaping productivity and recruitment *** from the river also drove mortality and carbon stock *** with high-carbon stocks favoured higher competition and lessened produc-tivity and recruitment *** soil fertility and texture are considered crucial components shaping forest dynamics,there was no clear influence of those variables on the present forest,probably because the strong effects of soil moisture,forest edge and distur-bance disrupted the correlation between soil and forest dynamics.

Rescuing agroforestry as strategy for agriculture in Southern Brazil

Knowledge about agricultural ecosystems, as well as about ecological and social interactions that occur in an agricultural context, is essential to promote a balanced environment for production. Incorporating the forest landscape into farming systems has promoted the development of integrated production systems such as agroforestry. However, many aspects of the relationship between farming and the forest landscape have changed since the modernization of agriculture introduced by the Green Revolution. the objectives of this review are：（1） to contribute to the understanding of the changes in cultivation strategies and in the dynamics of agricultural systems,particularly in the context of farming in Santa Catarina State, Brazil;（2） to contribute to the understanding of agroforestry systems as a strategy to reintroduce the element of forestry into agricultural production systems; and（3） to compile a list of forest plant species that could be used in agroforestry. the approach adopted in this manuscript seeks to highlight the potential of agroforestry systems to conserve natural resources and thereby to support agricultural development by connecting environmental conservation with income for farmers.

In recent years,multiple advances have been made in understanding the photosynthetic machinery in model *** transfer to horticultural important fruit crops is challenging and time-consuming due to restrictions in gene editing tools and prolonged life ***,we characterize a gene encoding a PetM domain-containing protein in *** CRISPR/Cas9 knockout lines of the PetM showed impairment in the chloroplastic electron transport rate(EtR),reduced CO_(2) assimilation,and reduction of carotenoids and chlorophylls(Chl)under several light ***,growth-condition-dependent elevation or repression of Chl a/b ratios and de-epoxidation states were identified,underlining possible impairment compensation ***,under low light and glasshouse conditions,there were basal levels in CO_(2) assimilation and EtR,indicating a potential role of the PetM domain in stabilizing the cytochrome b6f complex(Cb6f)under higher light irradiance and increasing its quantum *** suggests a potential evolutionary role in which this domain might stabilize the site of the Cb6f regulating ratios of cyclic and linear electron transport and its potential importance during the conquest of terrestrial ecosystems during which plants were exposed to higher ***,the results are discussed with regard to metabolism and their implication to photosynthesis from an agronomic perspective.
