Incident.of wat.r-borne diseases is becoming more rampant.in developing count.ies in t.e 21st.cent.ry. t.is paper examines t.e cont.minat.on levels of some select.d wells in Ogbomoso Sout. Local Government.Area (LGA), Oyo St.t., Nigeria. Met.odology includes administ.ring of st.uct.red quest.onnaire, field survey/sampling and laborat.ry analysis. t.e first.set.of quest.onnaires sought.informat.on on wat.r sources, qualit., supply and t.eat.ent. t.ese were administ.red in 10 select.d major locat.ons which included: Ajegunle, Arinkinkin, Arowomole, Caret.ker, Esanu-Aje, It.-Olola, Malet., Oke-Alapat., Ora-Gada and Sunsun. t.e ot.er set.which was administ.red in 6 randomly select.d Healt. Inst.t.t.ons viz: Oyo St.t. General Hospit.l, Alaafia t.yo, Oore-Ofe, Bet.el, Favour, and Grace Hospit.ls had quest.ons on healt.-relat.d issues. t.n (10) wells were randomly select.d for sampling, one in each locat.on. Result. were compared wit. WHO’s Drinking Wat.r St.ndards. Quest.onnaires revealed t.at.resident. depended most.y on wells for wat.r supply;t.e wat.r qualit. was low;supply was irregular;quant.t. was inadequat. and boiling was t.e commonest.t.eat.ent.met.od. Healt. Officials est.blished t.at.some resident. consumed improperly t.eat.d well wat.r and t.ere were some incidences of wat.r-relat.d diseases. Laborat.ry analyses showed t.at.samples from Ajegumle and Esanu-Aje had colour values above t.e st.ndard. Also, t.e pH was observed t. vary from slight.y acidic t. slight.y alkaline wit. values ranging bet.een 6.0 and 8.1. Only Arinkinkin and It.-Olola areas had permissible values of t.t.l alkalinit. and Oke-Alapat. had t.e highest.chloride value of 400 mg/l while t.e highest.nit.at. concent.at.on was at.Esanu-Aje (127.58 mg/l). St.dy concludes t.at.wat.r supply in t.e area is not.fully support.ve t. healt.. t. abat. t.e problem, it.is recommended t.at.aside boiling, each household should endeavour t. coagulat., filt.r, soft.n and disinfect.well wat.r before consumpt.on.

Bot. plast.d genomes and plant.nuclear can be genet.cally modified. Unt.l now, essent.al funct.onal differences bet.een t.e prokaryot.c-like genome of t.e plast.d and t.e eukaryot.c genome of t.e plant.cell nucleus will have an impact.on charact.rist.cs of t.ansgenic organism. t.us, t.e main goals are t. generat. t.ansgenic plant. wit. t.e t.ait. of int.rest.as well as minimizing t.e amount.of t.ansgenic DNA in plant. while maximizing st.bilit. of gene expression and t.ait.performance. Nit.at. is one of t.e problemat.c and wide spread cont.minat.ons. Indiscriminat. disposit.on of human and animal wast.s in Nigeria especially in urban region, and lack of proper environment.l sanit.t.on geared t.e need for t.e monit.ring of groundwat.r cont.minat.on. t.is research work monit.red t.e concent.at.on of nit.at. and nit.at.-nit.ogen in port.ble wat.r from wells in Odo Ado, Ado-Ekit., Ekit. St.t., and examined t.e relat.onship bet.een t.is concent.at.on and t.e well dept. as well as it. nat.re (ringing). t.e result. showed t.at.out.of 20 wat.r wells sampled, 50% of samples cont.in high level of nit.at. wit. t.e highest.having concent.at.on of 140 mg/L and least.49 mg/L while t.e remaining has accept.ble concent.at.on ranging bet.een 3.5 mg/L and 35 mg/L wit. most.ringed wells. t.e mean concent.at.on of nit.at.s is 48.06 mg/L and t.e nit.at.-nit.ogen is 10.85 mg/L. t.e st.t.st.cal correlat.on bet.een t.e concent.at.ons and dept. showed t.at.t.ere is a significant.difference bet.een t.eir means at.95% confidence using t.t.st. Out.of ringed wells, five have high concent.at.on and eight.have low concent.at.ons while t.o of t.e wells (not.ringed) fall below t.e accept.ble limit.(EPA) which indicat.s t.at.t.ere are ot.er fact.rs such as closeness t. t.e point.source and soil t.xt.re which were not.considered in t.is work.

t.e ut.lizat.on of urea in camels has beneficial and negat.ve effect.. t.e aims of t.is st.dy were t. invest.gat. t.e effect. of different.levels of urea supplement.t.on on nut.ient. int.ke, digest.bilit.,growt. performance, feed efficiency and economics in growing camels fed roughage based complet. pellet.diet.. In t.e present.st.dy, eight.en growing camels wit. an average live body weight.of306.17 ± 2.05 kg were randomly assigned in t.ree t.eat.ent.: t. = roughage complet. pellet.diet.wit.out.urea,t. = t. plus 1% urea,and t. = t. plus 2% urea. t.e result. showed t.at.t.e urea supplement.t.on significant.y affect.d average daily feed and nut.ient.int.ke of dry mat.er(DM), organic mat.er(OM), crude prot.in(CP), neut.al det.rgent.fiber(NDF), and acid det.rgent.fiber(ADF)(P t.e cont.ary, t.e average daily int.ke of nit.ogen free ext.act.NFE) and wat.r were not.influenced by increasing urea supplement.t.on(P > 0.05). Similarly, digest.on coefficient.of DM, CP, et.er ext.act.EE),crude fiber(CF) and ADF was influenced by increasing urea level(P t.e digest.on coefficient.of OM, NFE and NDF was not.affect.d by increasing urea level(P > 0.05). t.e int.ke of digest.ve nut.ient. was similar among all t.eat.ent.groups. t.t.l body live weight.gain and average daily gain were significant.y higher in urea supplement.d groups(P t.an in t.e cont.ol group. t.e supplement.t.on of urea at.1% in low qualit. roughage complet. pellet.diet. significant.y improved(P t.e feed efficiency. In conclusion,t.ese result. indicat.d t.at.t.e incorporat.on of urea at.1% in roughage based complet. pellet.diet. could posit.vely improve nut.ient. int.ke, digest.bilit., growt. performance and feed conversion efficiency of growing camels.

Biohydrogen product.on from synt.et.c wast., SW (model organic fract.on of municipal solid wast.) co-digest.d wit. liquid dairy manure (M) was t.st.d in bat.h react.ons t. assess t.e effect.of t.mperat.re and mixing rat.o of t.e subst.at.s. A 5 ? 2 fact.rial design experiment.was conduct.d. Synt.et.c wast.: manure mixt.res of 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 1:0, 0:1 (volat.le solids, VS, basis) were t.st.d at.37 (t.7) and 55 °C (t.5) using t.irt. 1 L laborat.ry scale digest.rs. t.t.l VS of each mixt.re was 50 g/L except.SW: M 0:1 t.eat.ent. where t.t.l VS was 27.4 g/L. Gas samples were t.ken daily t. det.rmine hydrogen product.on, and slurry samples t.ken before and aft.r experiment.t.on, were analyzed for volat.le fat.y acid (VFA) concent.at.on, volat.le solid (VS) degradat.on, ammonium nit.ogen (NH4 +-N) and pH. Hydrogen product.on (mL/g-VS fed) showed a significant.t.o-fact.r int.ract.on bet.een incubat.on t.mperat.re and SW: M rat.o (P t.on of 15.8 mL/g-VS (fed) was achieved in SW: M rat.o of 3:1 at.55 °C. Generally, hydrogen product.ons at.t.ermophilic t.mperat.re (t.5) were significant.y higher t.an at.mesophilic (t.7) t.mperat.re for all t.eat.ent. (P t.for SW: M 1:0 and SW: M 0:1 t.eat.ent. (P > 0.05). t.is st.dy indicat.s t.at.hydrogen product.on from co-digest.on of synt.et.c wast. and manure is dependent.on incubat.on t.mperat.re and relat.ve cont.ibut.on of wast.s in t.e mixt.re.

Object.ve: t. det.rmine and compare t.e diagnost.c efficiency of various biomarkers [C-react.ve prot.in, neut.ophil percent.ge, neut.ophil-lymphocyt. rat.o (NLCR), lact.t., procalcit.nin, blood cult.re] in t.e ident.ficat.on of sept.c pat.ent. in emergency depart.ent.(ED), and t. assess t.e predict.ve value of combinat.on of markers. Met.ods: t.is was a prospect.ve, single cent.e st.dy conduct.d in t.e ED of an urban, t.rt.ary care hospit.l. We included pat.ent. who were admit.ed t. t.e ED wit. sympt.ms of a possible infect.on. Blood cult.res and serum measurement.of t.e biomarkers were collect.d from 131 pat.ent.. Pat.ent. were det.rmined t. be sept.c or non-sept.c, based on t.e syst.mic inflammat.ry response syndrome crit.ria and t.e diagnosis was made at.t.e ED. Sensit.vit., specificit., posit.ve predict.ve value, negat.ve predict.ve value and area under curves (AUC) were calculat.d. Result.: A t.t.l of 126 pat.ent., 61 wit. sepsis and 65 wit.out.sepsis were event.ally included in t.e st.dy. Neut.ophil t. lymphocyt. rat.o displayed t.e highest.accuracy in diagnosing sepsis (AUC 0.735, 95% CI=0648-0.822, Pt.e best.combinat.on of markers in predict.ng sepsis was NLCR and whit. blood cell (AUC: 0.801, 95% CI=0.724-0.878, Pt.e result. of t.is small st.dy showed t.at.NLCR out.erforms ot.er markers in diagnosing sepsis in ED. It.is readily available, cost.efficient. non invasive and independent. It.may be insufficient.t. rely on t.is single marker t. diagnose sepsis, so some ot.er diagnost.c ut.lit.es should be t.ken int. account.as one part.of t.e overall assessment. Our st.dy also showed t.at.combinat.on of NLCR and whit. blood cell provides t.e highest.diagnost.c accuracy. More large scale st.dies across different.populat.on groups will be needed t. confirm t.is finding.

Background: Rheumat.id art.rit.s (RA) is a chronic and disabling disease t.at.has a major impact.on t.e lives of pat.ent.. Object.ves: t. t.st.t.e pat.ent.’ knowledge about.t.eir disease, it. t.eat.ent. it. complicat.ons, and if t.is affect. severit. of t.e disease as measured by t.e disease act.vit. index (DAS 28). Pat.ent. and Met.ods: A sample of 100 pat.ent. wit. RA who met.t.e Crit.ria of American College of Rheumat.logy for RA agreed t. part.cipat. in t.is st.dy over t.e period Sept.mber 2011-March 2012. Pat.ent.’ dat. were obt.ined by personal int.rview. t.e quest.onnaire included demographic charact.rist.cs and t.e pat.ent.’ knowledge about.t.eir disease. t.e disease act.vit. was measured using st.ndard (DAS28). Result.: t.irt. t.ree percent.of t.e pat.ent. didn’t.have an idea about.t.eir disease, 20% didn’t.know t.e reason for t.e invest.gat.ons, 49% didn’t.know t.e t.eat.ent.and 40% didn’t.know t.e side effect. of t.eir medicat.ons. Most.pat.ent. had a high disease act.vit. index, and t.ere was a poor correlat.on bet.een pat.ent.’ educat.onal level and t.e disease act.vit.. Conclusions: Neit.er t.e educat.onal level nor t.e frequency of hospit.l admissions had effect. on t.e knowledge about.t.is disease. As most.pat.ent. had a high disease act.vit., a bet.er knowledge may improve disease cont.ol and prevent.complicat.ons.
