Visceral leishmaniasis in an immunocompetent Hungarian adult patient

Visceral leishmaniasis caused by L. infantum Nicolle 1908 (Kinetoplastida, Trypanosomatidae) is very rare in immunocompetent adults. Clinical manifestation of the infection occurs in children and immune-compromised patients associated with AIDS, haemopoietic malignancies or after renal, liver, and heart transplantations in Europe. Hungary is regarded free of leishmaniasis. Except for a single infection in a small girl without a travel history, only a few imported cases have been recorded among Hungarians returning from endemic areas. Case presentation: Visceral leishmaniasis was diagnosed in a 32 years old immumocompetent Hungarian man who had spent his holidays during the previous 3 years in Dalmatian territories (Dubrovnik, Makarska and Trogir) of Croatia. He had two months history of fever, chills, and night sweating associated with weight loss. Physical examination showed mild hepatomegaly and extreme splenomegaly. The protozoon infection was confirmed by parasitological, serological and molecular biological methods. Clinical recovery of the patient was observed after treatment with amphotericin B. Conclusion: We want to highlight the effects of climate changes and to call attention of health care professionals in Central and Eastern European countries to consider the possibility of leishmaniasis as an emerging disease of tourists returned from endemic re-gions.

Tilted-pulse-front-pumping(TPFP) lithium-niobate terahertz(THz) pulse sources are widely used in pump-probe and control experiments since they can generate broadband THz pulses with tens of microjoules of energy. However, the conventional TPFP setup suffers from limitations, hindering the generation of THz pulses with peak electric field strength over 1 MV/***, a few setups were suggested to mitigate or even eliminate these limitations. In this paper, we shortly review the setups that are suitable for the generation of single-cycle THz pulses with up to a few tens of megavolts/centimeter focused electric field strength. The THz pulses available with the new layouts pave the way for previously unattainable applications that require extremely high electric field strength and pulse energy in the multi-millijoule range.

Insufficient etiological workup of COVID-19-associated acute pancreatitis: A systematic review

BACKGROUND Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2) infection, mostly causing respiratory symptoms, is also known to affect the gastrointestinal tract. Several case reports hypothesize that SARS-CoV-2 could be an etiological factor in acute pancreatitis(AP).AIM To assess all the available evidence in the literature relating to coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) and *** We performed a systematic review of the available literature on the topic. Effect of herpesvirus infection on pancreatic duct cell secretion

AIM: To examine the effect of acute infection caused by herpesvirus (pseudorabies virus, PRV) on pancreatic ductal ***: The virulent Ba-DupGreen (BDG) and nonvirulent Ka-RREpOlacgfp (KEG) genetically modified strains of PRV were used in this study and both of them contain the gene for green fluorescent protein (GFP). Small intra/interlobular ducts were infected with BDG virus (107 PFU/mL for 6 h) or with KEG virus (1010 PFU/mL for 6 h), while non-infected ducts were incubated only with the culture media. The ducts were then cultured for a further 18 *** rate of HCO3- secretion [base efflux -J(B-)] was determined from the buffering capacity of the cells and the initial rate of intracellular acidification (1) after sudden blockage of basolateral base loaders with dihydro-4,4,-diisothiocyanatostilbene-2,2,-disulfonic acid (500 μmol/L)and amiloride (200 μmol/L), and (2) after alkali loading the ducts by exposure to NH4Cl. Modification of tooth development by heat shock protein 60

several heat shock proteins have been investigated in relation to tooth development, no available information is available about the spatial and temporal expression pattern of heat shock protein 60 （Hsp 60）. To characterize Hsp 60 expression in the structures of the developing tooth germ, we used Western blotting, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. Hsp 60 was present in high amounts in the inner and outer enamel epithelia, enamel knot （EK） and stratum intermedium （SI）. Hsp 60 also appeared in odontoblasts beginning in the bell stage. To obtain data on the possible effect of Hsp 60 on isolated lower incisors from mice, we performed in vitro culturing. To investigate the effect of exogenous Hsp 60 on the cell cycle during culturing, we used the 5-bromo-2- deoxyuridine （BrdU） incorporation test on dental cells. Exogenously administered Hsp 60 caused bluntness at the apical part of the 16.5-day-old tooth germs, but it did not influence the proliferation rate of dental cells. We identified the expression of Hsp 60 in the developing tooth germ, which was present in high concentrations in the inner and outer enamel epithelia, EK, SI and odontoblasts. High concentration of exogenous Hsp 60 can cause abnormal morphology of the tooth germ, but it did not influence the proliferation rate of the dental cells. Our results suggest that increased levels of Hsp 60 may cause abnormalities in the morphological development of the tooth germ and support the data on the significance of Hsp during the developmental processes.
