Mental health-related healthcare service utilisation and psychotropic drug dispensation trends in British Columbia during COVID-19 pandemic:a population-based study

Background The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the population’s mental health is vital for informing public health policy and decision-making.However,information on mental health-related healthcare service utilisation trends beyond the first year of the pandemic is limited.Aims We examined mental health-related healthcare service utilisation patterns and psychotropic drug dispensations in British Columbia,Canada,during the COVID-19 pandemic compared with the prepandemic period.Methods We conducted a retrospective population-based secondary analysis using administrative health data to capture outpatient physician visits,emergency department visits,hospital admissions and psychotropic drug dispensations.We examined time trends of mental health-related healthcare service utilisation and psychotropic drug dispensations between January to December 2019(prepandemic period)and January 2020 to December 2021(pandemic period).In addition,we calculated age-standardised rates and rate ratios to compare mental health-related healthcare service utilisation before and during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic,stratified by year,sex,age and condition.Results By late 2020,except for emergency department visits,utilisation of healthcare services recovered to prepandemic levels.Between 2019 and 2021,the monthly average rate for overall mental health-related outpatient physician visits,emergency department visits and psychotropic drug dispensations increased significantly by 24%,5%and 8%,respectively.Notable and statistically significant increases were observed among 10–14 year-olds(44%in outpatient physician visits,30%in emergency department visits,55%in hospital admissions and 35%in psychotropic drug dispensations)and 15–19 year-olds(45%in outpatient physician visits,14%in emergency department visits,18%in hospital admissions and 34%in psychotropic drug dispensations).Additionally,these increases were more prominent among females than males,with some variation for specific mental health-related conditions.Conclusions

BACKGROUND Despite the increased use of total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation(TPIAT),systematic evidence of its outcomes remains limited.AIM To evaluate the outcomes of TPIAT.METHODS We searched PubMed,EMBASE,and Cochrane databases from inception through March 2019 for studies on TPIAT outcomes.Data were extracted and analyzed using comprehensive meta-analysis software.The random-effects model was used for all variables.Heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 measure and Cochrane Q-statistic.Publication bias was assessed using Egger’s test.RESULTS Twenty-one studies published between 1980 and 2017 examining 1011 patients were included.Eighteen studies were of adults,while three studied pediatric populations.Narcotic independence was achieved in 53.5%[95% Confidence Interval(CI):45-62,Pell-equivalent/kg weight explained the marked heterogeneity between studies.CONCLUSION These results indicate acceptable success for TPIAT.Future studies should evaluate the discussed measures before and after surgery for comparison.

Development of Ecologically Acceptable Chlorpyrifos Formulation for Effective and Safe Application

Application of the commercial formulation of chlorpyrifos has resulted in considerable environmental contamination. This study was designed to develop environmentally acceptable chlorpyrifos formulation for safe and effective application. This involved the modification of clay surfaces from hydrophilic to hydrophobic via ion-exchange reaction with organic cations. The resulting organo-clay complexes were tested for adsorption and release of chlorpyrifos. HPLC and FTIR measurements showed considerable adsorption and strong interaction between chlorpyrifos molecules and the organo-clay complexes. Basal spacing results emphasized the formation of suitable micro-pores for chlorpyrifos molecules. HPLC and bioassay techniques confirmed the slow release of chlorpyrifos. Leaching potential showed retention of chlorpyrifos in the top soil. Therefore application of organoclay formulation of chlorpyrifos may reduce their potential environmental contamination and produce safe applications.

Nemacur Residue Analysis in Soil Water and Cucumber Samples Collected from the Field in Gaza Strip, Palestine

Application of Nemacur in Gaza strip increased rapidly as a potential alternative to the widely used soil sterilizing agent methyl bromide. Nemacur application may contaminate soil, water and plant systems due to its high solubility in water. The objective of this study was to determine Nemacur residues soil, water, and cucumber samples collected from a field plots applied Nemacur at different field rates (0.0, 0.5 F, 1 F, 2 F) where F is the recommended field rate of Nemacur (4 kg/Hectare). Nemacur residues were determined by chemo-assay and bioassay techniques. Results revealed that considerable Nemacur concentrations were found in cucumber fruits and plant leaves. Nemacur residues were higher in water samples collected from sandy soil (7.2 μg/L) than from clay soil (3.4 μg/L). Furthermore, Nemacur residues in sandy soil (0.23 μg/kg) were lower than those in clay soil (1.3 μg/kg). In addition, Nemacur concentration in top soil layer in clay soil was lower than other layers. Nemacur residues in cucumber fruits grown in sandy soil were lower than those in cucumber fruits grown in clay soil. Nemacur residues in cucumber fruits collected from the market were below detection limit of HPLC technique. Chemo-assay techniques determined lower concentration of Nemacur than bioassay techniques. It can be concludes that considerable concentrations of Nemacur were found in all tested samples. Comparing with maximum residues limits (MRLS). Nemacur concentrations in various environmental samples were less than the maximum residues limits.

Development of Analytical Method for the Detection of Nemacur Residues in Cucumber Fruits

Application of Nemacur (Fenamiphos) for pest control may contaminate soil, water and plant with harmful residues and pose threats to human life. This study developed an easy method for the determination of Nemacur residues in cucumber fruits collected from the central markets and from the farm. The method is based on extracting the active ingredients of Nemacur from the commercial formulation and used as a standard material to calibrate the HPLC to determine Nemacur residues in cucumber fruits collected from the central market. Results showed that more than 70% of the active ingredient was extracted from the commercial formulations. Standardization of HPLC with extracted materials showed strong positive association between concentration and peak area relationship. Bioassay investigation showed high mortality of tested organism (fish). Statistical analysis of mortality % between the commercial formulation and those of the extracted ingredient showed no significant differences. These results demonstrated the effectiveness of extracted Nemacur to calibrate HPLC and in bioassay test. Nemacur residues in Cucumber fruits collected from the market were below the detection limit of HPLC, recovery % of Nemacur from control group of cucumber was above 80%. It can be concluded that the method is easily developed and validated by bioassay and chemo-assay.

Usefulness of Presepsin (Soluble CD14 Subtype) as a Diagnostic Marker of Sepsis in Egyptian Patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Background: Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is a systemic inflammatory response to a variety of insults. Presepsin;the soluble CD14 subtype is a novel soluble CD14 molecule that is useful for diagnosing sepsis. It plays an important role in modulating the immune response to endotoxin in vitro and vivo. The aim: Of the study was to evaluate the usefulness of presepsin as a diagnostic marker of sepsis in acute leukemia. Methods: The current study was carried out on 40 adult patients with acute myeloid leukemia after receiving chemotherapy. 10 clinically normal individuals were included in the study to measure the level of presepsin. Results: This study was conducted on 50 individuals divided into 2 groups. Group I included 40 adult AML patients who fulfilled at least two of the diagnostic criteria for SIRS and Group II were 10 healthy adult persons as a control group. In Group I there were 11 patients (27.5%) having SIRS, 8 (20%) having sepsis, 9 (22.5%) having severe sepsis and 12 (30%) having septic shock. Data indicate that presepsin level was significantly higher in patients than control P = 0.017. Our results showed that the level of presepsin has a significantly positive correlation to the degree of severity of sepsis with P value 0.0001. Using the ROC curve, we found that presepsin was more specific than CRP in detection of sepsis. Conclusion: sCD14-ST (presepsin) is a new important marker for diagnosis and prognosis of sepsis. Its level increases in the first six hours after the onset of sepsis. Our data demonstrated that the concentration of presepsin is specifically increased during sepsis and is directly proportional to the degree of sepsis. Regarding sensitivity and specificity of presepsin in the discrimination of sepsis patients from healthy controls, a high specificity but low sensitivity was reported by most of the studies.

The optical properties of germanium can be tailored by combining strain engineering and n-type doping.In this paper,we review the recent progress that has been reported in the study of germanium light emitters for silicon photonics.We discuss the different approaches that were implemented for strain engineering and the issues associated with n-type doping.We show that compact germanium emitters can be obtained by processing germanium into tensile-strained microdisks.

Background:Dietary specialization should arise when there is a relatively high abundance of a particular resource,where animals may select food items to obtain an optimal diet that maximizes energy intake.Large‑bodied psittacines frequently exhibit a narrow dietary niche with specific habitat use,but few studies have determined whether psittacines select food resources,and how this influences habitat use.Methods:We established fruiting phenology transects to evaluate food resource availability for the large‑bodied Military Macaw(Ara militaris)in semi‑deciduous,deciduous,and pine‑oak forest at two sites along the coast of Jalisco,during the dry season when macaws are nesting.We also determined Military Macaw diet by observations of foraging macaws along transect routes,and conducted bromatological analysis of the nutritional content of the most consumed resource.Results:Military Macaws used six plant species as food items during the dry season,and had a narrow dietary niche(Levins’B=0.28),with 56%of foraging macaws consuming the seeds of Hura polyandra.No food resources were recorded in pine‑oak forest during the dry season,with food resources and foraging by macaws concentrated in tropical deciduous and semi‑deciduous forest,where H.polyandra was the most abundant fruiting tree species.When considering the proportional availability of food resources,we determined a broad Hurlbert dietary niche breadth of H=0.67,indicating that Military Macaws consumed food resources according to their availability.Furthermore,the seeds of H.polyandra were an important source of protein,carbohydrates,minerals and moisture,and the hard fruitcasing means that these seeds are exclusively available for macaws.Conclusions:By concentrating their diet on the most abundant resources,Military Macaws may increase foraging efficiency in the dry season.The high nutrient content also means that concentrating the diet on seeds of H.polyandra may be an optimal foraging strategy for Military Macaws to meet their energy requirements during the bre

GeSn alloys are promising materials for CMOS-compatible mid-infrared lasers manufacturing.Indeed,Sn alloying and tensile strain can transform them into direct bandgap semiconductors.This growing laser technology however suffers from a number of limitations,such as poor optical confinement,lack of strain,thermal,and defects management,all of which are poorly discussed in the literature.Herein,a specific GeSn-on-insulator(GeSnOI)stack using stressor layers as dielectric optical claddings is demonstrated to be suitable for a monolithically integration of planar Group-IV semiconductor lasers on a versatile photonic platform for the near-and mid-infrared spectral range.Microdisk-shape resonators on mesa structures were fabricated from GeSnOI,after bonding a Ge_(0.9)Sn_(0.1) alloy layer grown on a Ge strain-relaxed-buffer,itself on a Si(001)substrate.The GeSnOI microdisk mesas exhibited significantly improved optical gain as compared to that of conventional suspended microdisk resonators formed from the as-grown layer.We further show enhanced vertical out-coupling of the disk whispering gallery mode in-plane radiation,with up to 30%vertical out-coupling efficiency.As a result,the GeSnOI approach can be a valuable asset in the development of silicon-based mid-infrared photonics that combine integrated sources in a photonic platform with complex lightwave engineering.
