Caste differentiation in termites is one of the most conspicuous examples of facultative polyphenism in *** is clear that specific cuticular formation occurs in hard exocuticles during caste ***,the developmental pattern of the soft endocuticle in the differentiation pathways of castes is *** reveal whether the endocuticle is involved in caste differentiation,we compared the exocuticle and endocuticle thickness of individuals in 2 pathways(nymph line and worker line)of caste differentiation in the termite Reticulitermes *** endocuticle protein genes were identified by transcriptome analysis and the expression patterns of these genes were confirmed in caste *** found that the endocuticle structure showed dynamic changes in 2 pathways,and the first difference in endocuticle structure occurred after larvae differentiation bifurcated into workers and *** thinning of the endocuticle was a significant event from nymphs developing into alates with the thickest exocuticle and thinnest *** thickest endocuticle layers were found in the heads of the workers and the ultrastructure of the endocuticle in the heads was more complex than that in the thorax–*** endocuticle protein genes were identified and annotated as endocuticle structural glycoproteins SgAbd-2,SgAbd-9,and *** expression levels of endocuticle protein genes changed dramatically during caste development and the expression levels in neotenic reproductives(secondary reproductives)were significantly higher than those in alates(primary reproductives).These results reveal the roles of endocuticles in caste differentiation and adaptation to the environment.

Fabrication of NiO coated SiO_2 and SiO_2 coated NiO for the removal of Pb^(2+) ions

We have prepared silica,SiO2coated NiO and NiO coated SiO2by sol-gel *** physicochemical properties of the desired materials were investigated by surface charge properties,scanning electron microscopy（SEM）,energy dispersive X-ray（EDX） spectroscopy,surface area measurements and X-ray diffraction（XRD） *** point of zero charge（PZC） of the solid was determined by the salt addition *** coated materials,two PZC values were noted representing the surface charge of their *** SEM image of SiO2coated NiO displays a uniform coating of silica on the surface of NiO whereas in case of NiO coated SiO2,a honeycomb like appearance was observed with highly porous *** the diffractograms of NiO,the characteristic peaks were suppressed in NiO coated silica however,no diffraction peak could be seen in SiO2coated *** adsorption technique was applied for the removal of Pb2＋ions from aqueous *** sorption trend for Pb2＋ions was observed in the order of NiO coated SiO2〉 SiO2coated NiO 〉 NiO 〉 *** trend confirms that the coated materials have more sorption capacities than their parent counterparts.

Most of the melanoma cases of skin cancer are the life-threatening form of *** is prevalent among the Caucasian group of people due to their light skin *** is the second most common cancer that hits the age group of 15–29 *** high number of cases has increased the importance of automated systems for *** diagnosis should be fast and accurate for the early treatment of *** should remove the need for biopsies and provide stable diagnostic *** requires large quantities of *** lesion datasets contain various kinds of dermoscopic images for the detection of *** publicly available benchmark skin lesion datasets,ISIC 2017,ISBI 2016,and PH2,are used for the ***,the ISIC archive and PH2 are the most challenging and demanding dermoscopic *** datasets’pre-analysis is necessary to overcome contrast variations,under or over segmented images boundary extraction,and accurate skin lesion *** this paper,we proposed the statistical histogram-based method for the pre-categorization of skin lesion *** image histogram properties are utilized to check the image contrast variations and categorized these images into high and low contrast *** two performance measures,processing time and efficiency,are computed for evaluation of the proposed *** results showed that the proposed methodology improves the pre-processing efficiency of 77%of ISIC 2017,67%of ISBI 2016,and 92.5%of PH2 datasets.

Weed growth, herbicide efficacy, and rice productivity in dry seeded paddy field under different wheat stubble management methods

To ascertain the influence of wheat stubble management options and chemical weed control methods on weed growth and productivity of dry direct-seeded fine rice, a two years' field study was undertaken at the Agronomic Research Farm, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan in 2013 and 2014. Different wheat stubble management methods, viz., incorporation, burning and retention were executed during seed-bed preparation. While, herbicide treatments comprised of a weed check, weed free, pendimethalin followed by tank mixture of fenoxaprop p-ethyl+ethoxysulfuron ethyl, and bispyribac sodium followed by tank mixture of fenoxaprop p-ethyl+ethoxysulfuron ethyl. Results revealed that weed control efficacy of both herbicide treatments ranged from 84 to 94%. Herbicide treatments significantly reduced weed density(88–90%) and dry weight(86–88%), while improved the rice growth attributes compared with weed check. Application of bispyribac sodium followed by tank mixture of fenoxaprop p-ethyl+ethoxysulfuron ethyl in stubble retention recorded 226 and 273% increase in kernel yield over weedy check in 2013 and 2014, respectively. In stubble incorporation, pendimethalin followed by tank mixture of fenoxaprop p-ethyl+ethoxysulfuron ethyl was more effective in increasing(256–293%) rice yields over weedy check. Among different treatment combinations, the maximum net benefits(1 397.49^(–1) 472.22 USD ha^(–1)), net returns(636–700 USD ha^(–1)), benefit cost ratio(1.77^(–1).83) and marginal rate of return(2 187–2 330%) were recorded with the application of bispyribac sodium followed by fenoxaprop p-ethyl+ethoxysulfuron ethyl in stubble retention. In crux, application of bispyribac sodium followed by tank mixture of fenoxaprop p-ethyl+ethoxysulfuron ethyl in stubble retention is efficient approach to control weeds, and get maximum rice productivity and net economic returns under dry seeded system.

Effect of foreign ions for the determination of metal ion in the presence of surfactants

Protective effect of capsaicin against methyl methanesulphonate induced toxicity in the third instar larvae of transgenic Drosophila melanogaster(hsp70-lacZ)Bg9

Capsaicin(trans-8-methyl-N-vanillyl-6-nonenamide) is the main component in hot peppers, including red chili peppers, alapenos, and habanero, belonging to the genus Capsicum. Capsaicin is a potent antioxidant that interferes with free radical activities. In the present study, the possible protective effect of capsaicin was studied against methyl methanesulphonate(MMS) induced toxicity in third instar larvae of transgenic Drosophila melanogaster(hsp70-lacZ)Bg^9. The third instar was allowed to feed on the diet having different doses of capsaicin and MMS separately and in combination. The results suggested that the exposure of third instar larvae to the diet having MMS alone showed significant hsp70 expression as well as tissue DNA and oxidative damage, whereas the larvae feed on the diet having MMS and capsaicin showed a decrease in the toxic effects for 48-h of exposure. In conclusion, capsaicin showed a dose-dependent decrease in the toxic effects induced by MMS in the third instar larvae of transgenic Drosophila melanogaster.

Intense supercontinuum generation in the near-ultraviolet range from a 400-nm femtosecond laser filament array in fused silica

An intense supercontinuum（SC） in the near-ultraviolet range is generated from filamentation by focusing a 400-nm laser into fused silica with a microlens array（MLA）. The spectrum of the SC is shown to be sensitive to the distance between the MLA and fused silica. In our optimal conditions, the near-ultraviolet SC can cover a range of 350-600 nm,where a bandwidth of approximately 55 nm above the 1μJ/nm spectral energy density and 20 nm bandwidth with tens ofμJ/nm are achieved. In addition, the energy conversion efficiency of the 400 nm laser for SC generation is further analyzed.A maximum conversion efficiency of 66% is obtained when the entrance face of fused silica is set around the focus of the MLA.

Microstructure and anisotropic swelling behaviour of compacted bentonite/sand mixture

Pre-compacted elements （disks, tutus） of bentonite/sand mixture are candidate materials for sealing plugs of radioactive waste disposal. Choice of this material is mainly based on its swelling capacity allowing all gaps in the system to be sealed, and on its low permeability. When emplaced in the gallery, these elements will start to absorb water from the host rock and swell. Thereby, a swelling pressure will develop in the radial direction against the host rock and in the axial direction against the support structure. In this work, the swelling pressure of a small scale compacted disk of bentonite and sand was experimentally studied in both radial and axial directions. Different swelling kinetics were identified for different dry densities and along different directions. As a rule, the swelling pressure starts increasing quickly, reaches a peak value, decreases a little and finally stabilises. For some dry densities, higher peaks were observed in the radial direction than in the axial direction. The presence of peaks is related to the microstructure change and to the collapse of macro- pores. In parallel to the mechanical tests, microstructure investigation at the sample scale was conducted using microfocus X-ray computed tomography （BCT）. Image observation showed a denser structure in the centre and a looser one in the border, which was also confirmed by image analysis. This structure heterogeneity in the radial direction and the occurrence of macro-pores close to the radial boundary of the sample can explain the large peaks observed in the radial swelling pressure evolution. Another interesting result is the higher anisotropy found at lower bentonite dry densities, which was also analysed by means ofμCT observation of a sample at low bentonite dry density after the end of test. It was found that the macro-pores, especially those between sand grains, were not filled by swelled bentonite, which preserved the anisotropic microstructure caused by uniaxial compression
