Investigating the Effectiveness of Road-related Mitigation Measures under Semi-controlled Conditions:A Case Study on Asian Amphibians

Road traffic is the main factor causing the decline in amphibian populations worldwide. The proper design of an amphibian tunnel is one of the most efficient measures to mitigate the negative impacts of road traffic on amphibians. However, no study has investigated the effectiveness of amphibian tunnels under semi-controlled conditions in Asian amphibians. Here, we selected two representative amphibian species, the Chinese brown frog, Rana chensinensis, and the Asiatic toad, Bufo gargarizans, which suffer the most severe road mortality along the roads in Northeast China. We placed experimental arrays of culverts of various sizes(diameters of 1.5, 1, and 0.5 m for circular culverts; side lengths of 1.5, 1, and 0.5 m for box culverts), and substrate type(soil, concrete, and metal) to examine the preferences of both species during the migratory season between May and September in 2016 and 2017. The results revealed that the Chinese brown frog preferred mid-and large-sized culverts as well as soil culverts. We concluded that culverts with a side length ≥ 1 m, lined with soil, and accompanied by a ≥ 0.4 m high guide drift fence and ≤ 45° gradient on the roadside ditch wall would best facilitate road crossings for both species and likely for other amphibian species in Northeast China.

In the present study,synthetic chalcones,flavanones and Schiff bases were prepared starting from paraceamol,and evaluated their anticipated anti-inflammatory *** were synthesized by reacting 3-acetyl-4-hydroxy acetanilide and aromatic aldehydes in alcoholic potassium hydroxide(KOH) solution under Claisen-Schmidt condensation *** chalcones were cyclized in the presence of piperidine in isoamyl alcohol to obtain flavonone *** bases were synthesized by condensing 3-acetyl-4-hydroxy anilines with aromatic aldehydes in the presence of *** Schiff bases were further reacted with other aromatic aldehydes in alcoholic KOH *** cheminformatics software was used to predict the anti-inflammatory activity of synthesized *** software predicted that chalcone-based Schiff bases 6a–d contained structural features that can exhibit anti-inflammatory *** the prepared derivatives of acetaminophen exhibited moderate to excellent in vivo anti-inflammatory activity in carrageenan-induced edema in rat *** the Schiff bases coupled chalcones showed good anti-inflammatory activity compared with the reference drug,*** evaluation of their therapeutic potential and safety profile is required in the future study.

Effects of drug-polymer dispersions on solubility and in vitro diffusion of artemisinin across a polydimethylsiloxane membrane

Artemisinin(ART) is a sesquiterpene lactone with an endo-peroxide bridge that is thought to be responsible for its antimalarial *** has low oral bioavailability because of aqueous insolubility,which leads to local toxicity at the site of *** present work focused on increasing its solubility and evaluating its permeation across a model membrane to mimic transdermal delivery that bypasses the hepatic *** this purpose,physical mixtures(PM),solid dispersions(SD) and lyophilized dispersions(LD) with different drug-polymer ratios(1:0.5,1:1,1:2,1:4 and 1:9) were prepared using the hydrophilic polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP).Drug-polymer dispersions were characterized using X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR).Solubility was measured in three solvents:de-ionized water,phosphate buffered saline(PBS) and *** toluene-water partition coefficient was evaluated and compared with the literature and calculated logP *** vitro diffusion of ART was studied across a polydimethylsiloxane membrane from a saturated solution of drug-polymer *** patterns showed a gradual decrease in crystallinity of ART with increasing polymer concentration,while FTIR confirmed no interactions between ART and *** was increased up to 4-,5-and 8-fold for LD in water,PBS and methanol,*** logP for toluene-water was 2.65 ± 0.3,which is in good agreement with literature and calculated logP *** was enhanced,which is attributed to the decrease in crystallinity and increase in wettability of the *** ART flux was significantly higher than that of pure ART(0.12 ± 0.01) with increasing PVP concentration for SD and LD *** conclusion,drug-polymer dispersions with PVP improve the pharmaceutical properties of ART in the order LD>SD>PM.

利用因热源作用而收缩和膨胀的导管研究一阶化学反应和热辐射对幂律Carreau流体热质传输的影响。考虑了以热辐射形式产生热量的流体流动的体积热源和非线性热辐射。采用基于射击简单算法的RK-4方法对径向模式下的质量、动量、能量和物种浓度等基本守恒方程进行了重构和数值求解。考虑粒子的布朗性和热泳性,纳米粒子存在的模型是现象模型。将动量方程与扩展Jaffrey-Hamel问题的Carreau模型组合在一起。不同幂律指数对流体摩擦传热、传热量和传质的影响主要表现在流变性能上,说明剪切增稠型流体比剪切减薄型流体更有效。热传输率在热源处最大,在幂指数最大化时最小。这些研究可能有助于开发一种物理上合理的方法,用于系统化评估收缩/扩张通道中的流体流动和能量使用。

Nitrogen(N) metabolism related enzyme activities,cell uitrastructure and nutrient contents as affected by N level and barley genotype

Development of the new crop cultivars with high yield under low nitrogen （N） input is a fundamental approach to enhance agricultural sustainability, which is dependent on the exploitation of the elite germplasm. In the present study, four barley genotypes （two Tibetan wild and two cultivated）, differing in N use efficiency （NUE）, were characterized for their physiolog- ical and biochemical responses to different N levels. Higher N levels significantly increased the contents of other essential nutrients （P, K, Ca, Fe, Cu and Mn）, and the increase was more obvious for the N-efficient genotypes （ZD9 and XZ149）. The observation of ultrastructure showed that chloroplast structure was severely damaged under low nitrogen, and the two high N efficient genotypes were relatively less affected. The activities of the five N metabolism related enzymes, i.e., nitrate reductase （NR）, glutamine sy＇nthetase （GS）, nitrite reductase （NiR）, glutamate synthase （GOGAT） and glutamate dehydrogenase （GDH） all showed the substantial increase with the increased N level in the culture medium. However the increased extent differed among the four genotypes, with the two N efficient genotypes showing more increase in com- parison with the other two genotypes with relative N inefficiency （HXRL and XZ56）. The current findings showed that a huge difference exists in low N tolerance among barley genotypes, and improvement of some physiological traits （such as enzymes） could be helpful for increasing N utilization efficiency.

以澳大利亚库珀盆地二叠系Roseneath组和Muteree组页岩样品及测井数据为基础,综合利用地球化学分析、测井解释和岩心分析技术对Roseneath组和Muteree组页岩进行矿物模拟及岩石物性参数研究,评估这两套页岩的页岩气资源潜力。综合岩心和岩屑样品分析得到的沉积学、岩相学、扫描电镜(SEM)和X射线衍射(XRD)数据,建立目的层矿物模型;基于岩心和岩屑的常规岩心分析结果、伽马测井资料、扫描电镜分析结果、XRD分析结果、地球化学和岩相学分析结果,针对关键井进行岩石物理建模。利用所建模型对两套页岩进行矿物成分模拟和岩石物性参数分析。Roseneath组页岩和Murteree组页岩均由黏土、石英、碳酸盐和干酪根组成,还含有少量副矿物,如长石、菱铁矿等。根据孔隙度、渗透率、TOC、含水饱和度、矿物组成等结果判断,Murteree组页岩在盆地范围内的资源潜力比Roseneath组页岩更好,潜力区在Encounter 1井区及其周边地区。

Geochemical modeling, fate distribution, and risk exposure of potentially toxic metals in the surface sediment of the Shyok suture zone, northern Pakistan

The objective of the current study was to assess the contamination of potentially toxic metals(PTMs) in weathered surface sediment, along stream tributaries, and surrounding area of the river Chitral, Shyok suture zone district Chitral, Pakistan. To understand the geochemical features of 113 sediment, samples were collected from the Mirkhani and Drosh area. Then, different statistical tools including the geoaccumulation index(Igeo), cluster analysis(CA), principal component analysis(PCA), and ecological risk assessment(ERA) were used to unravel the origin, intensity, and exposure level of PTMs to control risk and restore the ecosystem within the study area. The results for the PTMs namely nickle(Ni),chromium(Cr), copper(Cu), cadmium(Cd), lead(Pb), zinc(Zn), and cobalt(Co) in Mirkhani and Drosh were in the following ranges: 10 e150, 15 e210, 15 e250, 0.08 e1.00, 10 e70, 76 e240 and 14 e51; and 13 e240, 17 e210, 15 e150, 0.08 e0.60, 7 e140, 47 e150 and 13 e36 mg/kg, respectively. In consequence, the potential ecological risk caused by Pb, Ni, Cu, Co, Cr, and Zn is reflected by the percentages of samples with an ecological risk index(ERI) greater than one which were 100%, 91%, 100%, 100%, 92%, and 100%,respectively. However, the overall mean decreasing order of ecological risk of PTMs in the district Chitral was Pb > Ni > Cu > Co > Cr > Zn > Cd. Moreover, the PCA yielded 78% variability which indicated that mineral prospects play an important role in the contamination of sediment. Furthermore, the mineral phases of Pb and Zn suggested supersaturation, while that for Cd revealed unsaturation. The results of Igeo, ERI, and CA indicated contamination of PTMs in the study area. The ERI value of Pb, Ni, Cu, Co, Cr,and Zn was higher than 1 suggesting an ecological risk in the study area. In this paper, synthesis and anticancer activities of morpholine hydrazones scaffold（1-17） thoroughly studied. Small series of morpholine hydrazones synthesized by treating 5-morpholinothiophene-2-carbaldehyde with different aryl hydrazides to form morpholine hydrazones scaffold（1-17）. The in vitro anticancer potential of all these compounds was checked against human cancer cell lines like Hep G2（human hepatocellular liver carcinoma） and MCF-7（human breast adenocarcinoma）. Analogs 13 had similar substantial cytotoxic effects towards Hep G2 with IC_（50） value 6.31±1.03μmmol/L when compared with the standard Doxorubicin（IC_（50）value 6.00±0.80μmmol/L）; while compounds 5,8 and 9 showed potent cytotoxicity against MCF-7 with IC_（50） value 7.08±0.42μmmol/L, 1.26±0.34μmmol/L and11.22±0.22μmmol/L respectively when compared with the standard Tamoxifen（IC_（50）= 11.00±0.40μmol/L）. Molecular docking studies also performed to understand the binding interaction.

This study evaluates the use of several pier scour equations for estimation of pier scour depth and then compare their results with the 3D model simulated using software like Flow-3D so that we may be able to conclude which equation yields closest value to the simulated model,which in our case is considered as a replacement for field *** piers scouring is one of the leading causes of bridge failure *** pier-scour equations have been proposed – based on laboratory and field experimentations and data – for calculation of the potential scour depths at current and future（proposed）*** different pier-scour equations have been proposed using various criterions – based on the understanding of the author and the available resources like laboratory,equipment,field access,available data,parameters considered and time etc.– they tend to estimate scour depth with lots of variations from each *** improvements continue to be made with the ultimate goal of minimizing underestimation and overestimation of *** pier scour is underestimated,scour depths assumed in the bridge design could be exceeded during large *** scour could lessen support for the bridge pier and destabilize the *** ensure that pier-scour depth is not underestimated,some empirical equations have been adjusted to yield more conservative（larger）scour ***,calculated scour depths from those equations might indicate that more bridges are scour-critical（subject to failure due to scour）than is actually the case and thus may lead to expensive over-design or unnecessary retrofitting of pier *** a comprehensive study was needed to evaulate the different proposed equations,which is the purpose of our research.
