Assessment of tear film parameters post-treatment with commercial eyelid cleaning wipes:a pilot study

AIM:To investigate the short-term effects of commercially available eyelid-cleaning wipes on film parameters.METHODS:This study enrolled 48 healthy participants aged 20-35y(both males and females).Clinical assessment included the Ocular Surface Disease Index(OSDI)questionnaire,non-invasive tear break-up time(NITBUT),tear meniscus height(TMH),and lipid layer pattern(LLP).Based on these initial results,participants were categorized as either non-dry eye or dry eye.Participants in each group were randomly allocated to either Blephaclean■or Systane■treatments.Changes in NITBUT,TMH,and LLP levels before and after lid wipe treatment were assessed.RESULTS:The dry eye group exhibited significantly higher OSDI scores and lower NITBUT and TMH levels than in the non-dry eye group(P0.05).Similarly,the LLP levels were significantly improved with Systane■(P<0.001)post-treatment compared to individuals in the non-dry eye group.However,the dry eye subjects showed higher posttreatment LLP levels than the untreated group(P<0.02).CONCLUSION:The short-term effects of Systane®eyelid wipes on tear film parameters suggest their effectiveness in dry eye disease.Nonetheless,further exploration of their long-term impact is essential to justify their cost effectiveness and efficacy in treating both aqueous deficiency and evaporative dryness.

Surface Electromyography(sEMG)plays a key role in many applications such as control of Human-Machine Interfaces(HMI)and neuromusculoskeletal modeling.It has strongly nonlinear relations to joint kinematics and reflects the subjects’intention in moving their limbs.Such relations have been traditionally examined by either integrated biomechanics and multi-body dynamics or gesture-based classification approaches.However,these methods have drawbacks that limit their usability.Different from them,joint kinematics can be continuously reconstructed from sEMG via estimation approaches,for instance,the Artificial Neural Networks(ANNs).The Comparison of different ANNs used in different studies is difficult,and in many cases,impossible.The current study focuses on fairly evaluating four types of ANN over the same dataset and conditions in proportional and simultaneous estimation of 15 hand joint angles from 10 sEMG signals.The presented ANNs are Feedforward,Cascade-Forward,Radial Basis Function(RBFNN),and Generalized Regression(GRNN).Each ANN is applied to its special parametric study.All the methods efficiently solved the regression problem of the complex multi-input multi-output bio-system.The RBFNN has the best performance over the others with a 79.80%mean correlation coefficient over all joints,and its accuracy reaches as high as 92.67%in some joints.Interestingly,the highest accuracy over individual joints is 93.46%,which is achieved via the GRNN.The good accuracy suggests that the proposed approaches can be used as alternatives to the previously adopted ones and can be employed effectively to synchronously control multi-degrees of freedom HMI and for general multi-joint kinematics estimation purposes.

This research tests the effect of introducing turbulators of a new type into a circular tube heat exchanger under a constant and uniform longitudinal heatﬂux condition.A 45 mm diameter copper tube with a length of 1,350 mm is utilized with a solid disk being inserted inside the tube,which consists of three sections,each one containing two slots.The slot is cut at a 45 degree angle toward the inner tube surface,which results in diverging theﬂow toward the inner hot tube surface in order to enhance the heat transfer process.Air is considered as the workingﬂuid with Prandtl number 0.71.The Reynolds number spans the interval from 6,000–13,500,which indicates that the consideredﬂow is turbulent.The heat exchanger performance is studied and analyzed in terms of average Nusselt number.The experimental results show that the Nusselt number value is directly proportional to the increase of the Reynolds number,and the number of turbulators inserts.With the use of three novel turbulators,the heat transfer was about 3.15 times higher than that in the smooth tube and the friction factor was about 1.11.

The novel betacoronavirus(Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2,SARS‐CoV‐2)is a pathogen that causes deadly respiratory disease named coronavirus disease 2019(COVID‐19).The incidence of this disease has increased in the last few months affecting 257,832,881 people in 221 countries and 51,68,069 deaths worldwide according to Worldometer at 04:03 GMT on November 22,2021.Thus,the emergence of this disease creates a challenge for health care providers in handling this pathogen and reducing its risk of transmission.In developing countries,this virus is treated in biosafety level 2 laboratories,where a high concentration of pathogen can easily affect the laboratory staff and cause the spread of this disease.Based on the epidemiology and characteristics of the SARS‐CoV‐2 virus already discussed in recent studies,we will provide biosafety guidelines and suggestions for safe handling and transportation of the SARS‐CoV‐2 virus in dealing with the current pandemic situation with a focus on increased infectivity of emerging new variants.

Generating Synthetic Data to Reduce Prediction Error of Energy Consumption

Renewable and nonrenewable energy sources are widely incorporated for solar and wind energy that produces electricity without increasing carbon dioxide emissions.Energy industries worldwide are trying hard to predict future energy consumption that could eliminate over or under contracting energy resources and unnecessary financing.Machine learning techniques for predicting energy are the trending solution to overcome the challenges faced by energy companies.The basic need for machine learning algorithms to be trained for accurate prediction requires a considerable amount of data.Another critical factor is balancing the data for enhanced prediction.Data Augmentation is a technique used for increasing the data available for training.Synthetic data are the generation of new data which can be trained to improve the accuracy of prediction models.In this paper,we propose a model that takes time series energy consumption data as input,pre-processes the data,and then uses multiple augmentation techniques and generative adversarial networks to generate synthetic data which when combined with the original data,reduces energy consumption prediction error.We propose TGAN-skip-Improved-WGAN-GP to generate synthetic energy consumption time series tabular data.We modify TGANwith skip connections,then improveWGANGPby defining a consistency term,and finally use the architecture of improved WGAN-GP for training TGAN-skip.We used various evaluation metrics and visual representation to compare the performance of our proposed model.We also measured prediction accuracy along with mean and maximum error generated while predicting with different variations of augmented and synthetic data with original data.The mode collapse problemcould be handled by TGAN-skip-Improved-WGAN-GP model and it also converged faster than existing GAN models for synthetic data generation.The experiment result shows that our proposed technique of combining synthetic data with original data could significantly reduce the prediction error rate and increase the p

Developing a high-performance public key cryptosystem is crucial for numerous modern security applications.The Elliptic Curve Cryptosystem(ECC)has performance and resource-saving advantages compared to other types of asymmetric ciphers.However,the sequential design implementation for ECC does not satisfy the current applications’performance requirements.Therefore,several factors should be considered to boost the cryptosystem performance,including the coordinate system,the scalar multiplication algo-rithm,and the elliptic curve form.The tripling-oriented(3DIK)form is imple-mented in this work due to its minimal computational complexity compared to other elliptic curves forms.This experimental study explores the factors playing an important role in ECC performance to determine the best combi-nation that leads to developing high-speed ECC.The proposed cryptosystem uses parallel software implementation to speed up ECC performance.To our knowledge,previous studies have no similar software implementation for 3DIK ECC.Supported by using parallel design,projective coordinates,and a fast scalar multiplication algorithm,the proposed 3DIK ECC improved the speed of the encryption process compared with other counterparts and the usual sequential implementation.The highest performance level for 3DIK ECC was achieved when it was implemented using the Non-Adjacent Form algorithm and homogenous projection.Compared to the costly hardware implementations,the proposed software implementation is cost effective and can be easily adapted to other environments.In addition,the power con-sumption of the proposed ECC is analyzed and compared with other known cryptosystems.thus,the current study presents a detailed overview of the design and implementation of 3DIK ECC.

Water conservation starts from rationalizing irrigation,as it is the largest consumer of this vital source.Following the critical and urgent nature of this issue,several works have been proposed.The idea of most researchers is to develop irrigation management systems tomeet the water needs of plants with optimal use of this resource.In fact,irrigation water requirement is only the amount of water that must be applied to compensate the evapotranspiration loss.Penman-Monteith equation is the most common formula to evaluate reference evapotranspiration,but it requiresmany factors that cannot be available in many cases.This leads to a trend towards behavior model estimation.System identification with control is one of the most promising applications in this axis.The idea behind this proposal depends on three stages:First,the estimation of reference evapotranspiration(ET0)by a linear ARX model,where temperature,relative humidity,insolation duration and wind speed are used as inputs,and ET0 estimated by Penman-Monteith equation as output.The results show that the values estimated by thismethodwere in good agreement with the measured data.The second part of this paper is tomanage the quantity of water.For this purpose,two controllers are used for testing,lead-lag and PID.To adjust the first controller and optimize the choice of its parameters,Nelder-Mead algorithm is used.In the last part,a comparative study is done between the two used controllers.

Glinus lotoides ethanolic extract alleviates LPS-induced anxiety and depression-like behavior by modulating antioxidant and inflammatory biomarkers in rats

Objective:To explore the protective role of Glinus lotoides ethanolic extract in a depression model through modulating oxidant/antioxidant enzyme system and inflammatory status.Methods:Phytochemical constituents of Glinus lotoides ethanolic extract were evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively along with HPLC.Rats were divided into six groups.The normal control and the intoxicated groups received normal saline,and the standard group received imipramine,while the remaining groups received 100,300,and 500 mg/kg Glinus lotoides ethanolic extract.All groups received treatments for 14 d.Lipopolysaccharides(LPS)were then administered i.p.(0.83 mg/kg)to all groups except the normal control group.After 24 h,anxiety and depression-like behaviors were evaluated by performing behavioral analysis(open field,tail suspension,forced swim,sucrose preference test),and determining total oxidant status,total antioxidant capacity,catalase,and biochemical parameters[malondialdehyde,glutathione,superoxide dismutase,tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-alpha and interleukin(IL)-6].Results:Phytochemical studies confirmed the presence of phenols and flavonoids and HPLC analysis showed the presence of gallic acid,quercetin,chlorogenic,and caffeic acid.Total oxidant status was significantly decreased,while total antioxidant capacity was significantly increased in the Glinus lotoides ethanolic extract treated groups.Moreover,Glinus lotoides ethanolic extract diminished malondialdehyde,IL-6,and TNF-alpha levels,while increasing superoxide dismutase,catalase,and glutathione activities.Conclusions:Glinus lotoides ethanolic crude extract shows significant antidepressant activity by modulating oxidative and biochemical parameters that supports its folkloric use in traditional systems of medicine.

A susceptible,exposed,infectious,quarantined and recovered(SEIQR)model with fuzzy parameters is studied in this work.Fuzziness in the model arises due to the different degrees of susceptibility,exposure,infectivity,quarantine and recovery among the computers under consideration due to the different sizes,models,spare parts,the surrounding environments of these PCs and many other factors like the resistance capacity of the individual PC against the virus,etc.Each individual PC has a different degree of infectivity and resis-tance against infection.In this scenario,the fuzzy model has richer dynamics than its classical counterpart in epidemiology.The reproduction number of the developed model is studied and the equilibrium analysis is performed.Two different techniques are employed to solve the model numerically.Numerical simulations are performed and the obtained results are compared.Positivity and convergence are maintained by the suggested technique which are the main features of the epidemic models.
