The assembly of neurons into complex circuits relies upon appropriate axonal navigation to distant targets.Although considerable progress has been made toward understanding the regulation of the guidance and branching of axon extension,the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the coordination of the motility of the axon tip,axon growth,and branching remain largely unknown(Sudhof,2017).The Drosophila mushroom body(MB),the major site for associative learning and memory,is a powerful model system to investigate complex axon behaviors.The MB is a bilaterally symmetric central brain structure,mainly composed of Kenyon cells,MB output neurons,and dopaminergic neurons(Li et al.,2020).Among the seven neuronal subtypes of~2000 Kenyon cells,Y,a/β,and a/β'subtypes extend axons in a fascicle and bifurcate to produce two sister branches,one projecting into the dorsal lobe and the other into the medial lobe.

Objective:To scrutinize the definitions of minimal invasive surgical therapy(MIST)and to investigate urologists’knowledge,attitudes,and practices for benign prostatic obstruction surgeries.Methods:A 36-item survey was developed with a Delphi method.Questions on definitions of MIST and attitudes and practices of benign prostatic obstruction surgeries were included.Urologists were invited globally to complete the online survey.Consensus was achieved when more than or equal to 70%responses were“agree or strongly agree”and less than or equal to 15%responses were“disagree or strongly disagree”(consensus agree),or when more than or equal to 70%responses were“disagree or strongly disagree”and less than or equal to 15%responses were“agree or strongly agree”(consensus disagree).Results:The top three qualities for defining MIST were minimal blood loss(n=466,80.3%),fast post-operative recovery(n=431,74.3%),and short hospital stay(n=425,73.3%).The top three surgeries that were regarded as MIST were Urolift®(n=361,62.2%),Rezum®(n=351,60.5%),and endoscopic enucleation of the prostate(EEP)(n=332,57.2%).Consensus in the knowledge section was achieved for the superiority of Urolift®,Rezum®,and iTIND®over transurethral resection of the prostate with regard to blood loss,recovery,day surgery feasibility,and post-operative continence.Consensus in the attitudes section was achieved for the superiority of Urolift®,Rezum®,and iTIND®over transurethral resection of the prostate with regard to blood loss,recovery,and day surgery feasibility.Consensus on both sections was achieved for EEP as the option with the better symptoms and flow improvement,lower retreatment rate,and better suitable for prostate more than 80 mL.Conclusion:Minimal blood loss,fast post-operative recovery,and short hospital stay were the most important qualities for defining MIST.Urolift®,Rezum®,and EEP were regarded as MIST by most urologists.

This study presents a simple technique for strengthening the adhesive-bond strength between aluminium(Al)substrate and carbon fibre reinforced polymer(CFRP) utilising resin pre-coating(RPC) with carbon nanotubes(CNTs). The CNT-containing RPC solution with 90 wt% acetone and 10 wt% resin(without hardener) was applied onto Al substrates, where micro-/nano-vertical channels had been created by chemical or mechanical surface treatments to accommodate CNTs. RPC was able to fill all micro-/nano-cavities over the Al substrate surface, then CNTs were pulled into those vertical micro-channels by the capillary action generated from acetone evaporation.Normal epoxy adhesive(resin + hardener) was applied after the CNT-containing RPC treatment. CNTs bridging across the interface between the adhesive joint and Al substrate and sealing of micro-/nano-cavities by RPC effectively enhanced the interfacial shear bond strength between the Al substrate and CFRP by 30–100%depending on the Al substrate surface profiles. Al substrates with two different chemical treatments were compared in this study for the effectiveness of CNT interfacial reinforcement. Results from a steel substrate after sandblasting were also included for comparison.

Estimating the time evolution of a local scour hole downstream of submerged weirs can help determine the maximum scour depth and length and is essential to designing submerged weir foundations.In the current study, artificial neural networks with a backpropagation learning algorithm were used to estimate the temporal variation of scour profiles downstream of submerged weirs under clear water conditions. Physical factors, such as the flow condition, weir size, and sediment characteristics, are general scour considerations. Two sets of data combinations, namely original and non-dimensional data, were utilized in developing the backpropagation network(BPN) model. Using the data combinations and a trial-and-error method, the appropriate number of hidden neurons in the model architecture was determined. The results indicated that using non-dimensional variables as inputs in estimating the time evolution of scour holes downstream of a submerged weir is more suitable for the BPN model. Comparisons of the prediction results of the BPN model and an empirical regression formula revealed that the BPN model was more accurate and more direct in predicting the temporal variation of the local scour hole profile. In addition, sensitivity analysis showed that the dimensionless time exerted the most significant impact on the time evolution of the non-dimensional scour hole profile.

Background:Chemotherapy is a common treatment for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma,but the effect is not satisfactory.The study aimed to retrospectively evaluate the effects of adding all-trans-retinoic acid(ATRA)to infusional fluorouracil,leucovorin,and oxaliplatin(FOLFOX4)for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).Methods:We extracted the data of patients with advanced HCC who underwent systemic chemotherapy using FOLFOX4 or ATRA plus FOLFOX4 at the Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital,First Hospital of Jilin University,and Zhejiang Sian International Hospital and retrospectively compared for overall survival.The Cox proportional hazards model was used to calculate the hazard ratios for overall survival and disease progression after controlling for age,sex,and disease stage.Results:From July 2013 to July 2018,111 patients with HCC were included in this study.The median survival duration was 14.8 months in the ATRA plus FOLFOX4 group and 8.2 months in the FOLFOX4 only group(P<0.001).The ATRA plus FOLFOX4 group had a significantly longer median time to progression compared with the FOLFOX4 group(3.6 monthsvs.1.8 months,P<0.001).Hazard ratios for overall survival and disease progression were 0.465(95%confidence interval:0.298–0.726;P=0.001)and 0.474(0.314–0.717;P<0.001)after adjusting for potential confounders,respectively.Conclusion:ATRA plus FOLFOX4 significantly improves the overall survival and time to disease progression in patients with advanced HCC.

The majority of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage.Currently,there are only a few therapeutic methods available for patients with advanced HCC and extrahepatic metastasis(EHM).Systemic chemotherapy,such as FOLFOX4(infusions of fluorouracil,leucovorin,and oxaliplatin),has been reported for treating advanced HCC with EHM,but its effectiveness is very poor.

Dear Editor, We are writing this letter to present a case of ontreatment isolated superior ophthalmic vein thrombosis(SOVT) that progressed to cavernous sinus thrombosis(CST) and further complicated with carotid cavernous fistula(CCF). SOVT is a rare but potentially lethal illness. It is normally presented with orbital congestion syndrome with proptosis, ophthalmoplegia, diplopia, and high intraocular pressure(IOP)[1]. Late detection of this disease can lead to devastating complications such as optic nerve compression。

BACKGROUND Inadequate volume of future liver remnant(FLR)is a major challenge for hepatobiliary surgeons treating large or multiple liver tumors.As an alternative to associating liver partition and portal vein ligation(ALPPS)for staged hepatectomy and liver venous deprivation(LVD)using stage 1 interventional radiology for vascular embolization combined with stage 2 open liver resection have been used.CASE SUMMARY A novel modified LVD technique was performed in a patient with pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor with liver metastases by using stage 1 laparoscopic ligation of the right hepatic vein,right posterior portal vein,and short hepatic veins combined with local excision of three liver metastases in the left hemiliver.The operation was followed three days later by interventional radiology to embolize an anomalous right anterior portal vein to complete LVD.A stage 2 laparoscopic right hemihepatectomy and pancreaticosplenectomy were then carried out.CONCLUSION The minimally invasive technique promoted a rapid increase,comparable to ALPPS,in volume of the FLR after the stage 1 operation to allow the laparoscopic stage 2 resection to be performed.

Background:Both portal vein embolization(PVE)and associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy(ALPPS)have merits and demerits when used in patients with unresectable liver cancers due to insufficient volumes in future liver remnant(FLR).Methods:This study was a single-center,prospective randomized comparative study.Patients with the diagnosis of hepatitis B related hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to the 2 groups.The primary endpoints were tumor resection and three-year overall survival(OS)rates.Results:Between November 2014 to June 2016,76 patients with unresectable HBV-related HCC due to inadequate volume of FLR were randomly assigned to ALPPS groups(n=38)and TACE+PVE groups(n=38).Thirty-seven patients(97.4%)in the ALPPS group compared with 25 patients(65.8%)in the TACE+PVE group were able to undergo staged hepatectomy(risk ratio 1.48,95%CI:1.17-1.87,P<0.001).The three-year OS rate of the ALPPS group(65.8%)(95%CI:50.7-80.9)was significantly better than the TACE+PVE group(42.1%)(95%CI:26.4-57.8)(HR 0.50,95%CI:0.26-0.98,two-sided P=0.036).However,no significant difference in the OS rates between patients who underwent tumor resection in the 2 groups of patients was found(HR 0.80,95%CI:0.35-1.83,two-sided P=0.595).Major postoperative complications rates after the stage-2 hepatectomy were 54.1%in the ALPPS group and 20.0%in the TACE+PVE group(risk ratio 2.70,95%CI:1.17-6.25,P=0.007).Conclusions:ALPPS resulted in significantly better intermediate-term OS outcomes,at the expenses of a significantly higher perioperative morbidity rate compared with TACE+PVE in patients who had initially unresectable HBV-related HCC.
