Background -Right ventricular apical(RVA) pacing creates abnormal left ventricular contraction, hypertrophy, and reduced pump function. The adverse effects of ventricular desynchronization may explain the association of RVA pacing with an increased risk of heart failure hospitalization(HFH) in clinical trials. methods and Results -Baseline and postimplantation variables were used to predict HFH in the mode Selection Trial, a 2010-patient, 6-year trial of dual-chamber(DDDR) versus ventricular(VVIR) pacing in sinus node dysfunction. A Cox model showed that New York Heart Association(NYHA) class at baseline and follow-up predicted HFH(hazard ratio[HR], 3.99; 95%confidence interval[CI], 2.74-5.79 for NYHA class III/IV and HR, 2.17; 95%CI, 1.54-3.04 for NYHA class II versus class I); other predictors were heart failure(HR, 2.30; 95%CI, 1.70-3.11),atrioventricular(AV) block(HR, 1.48;95%CI, 1.11-1.97), and m.o.ardial infarction(mI)(HR, 1.37; 95%CI, 1.00-1.86). Postimplantation predictors were VVIR cumulative percent ventricular pacing(Cum%VP) >80(HR, 3.58; 95%CI, 1.72-7.45),DDDR Cum%VP >40 or VVIR Cum%VP ≤80(HR, 1.81; 95%CI, 0.94-3.50) versus DDDR Cum%VP ≤40; whether QRS duration(QRSd) was paced or spontaneous(HR, 2.21; 95%CI, 1.39-3.54; spontaneous versus paced); and drugs for atrial fibrillation(HR, 1.60; 95%CI, 1.19-2.15). Low baseline ejection fraction(EF) and postimplantation RVA-paced or spontaneous QRSd predicted HFH; the increased risk with QRSd was steeper for normal versus low EF(HR, 1.18; 95%CI, 1.11-1.27; versus HR, 1.08; 95%CI, 1.01-1.15; for a 10-ms increase); at a QRSd of ≈200 ms, normal-and low-EF patients had equivalent risk. HFH risk nearly doubled when VVIR Cum%VP was ≤80 or DDDR Cum%VP was >40 versus DDDR Cum%VP ≤40 and was additive with other risk factors. Sand dunes as potential sources of dust in northern China

While saltation bombardment of sand grains on a fine substrate can produce considerable dust, the well-sorted nature of sand dunes tends to preclude them from consideration as major dust sources. Recent research, however, has revealed that sand dunes can, in some cases, be large sources of dust. We used the PI-SWERL(Portable In-Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory) to measure in the field the potential of sand dunes and other desert landforms to emit particulate matter m(Pm-10) dust in the Tengger, Ulan Buh, and mu Us deserts of northern China. Combined with high resolution particle size measurements of the dune sand, an assessment of sand dunes as a dust source can be made. Large active transverse dunes tend to contain little to no stored Pm-10, yet they produce a low dust flux. Coppice dunes stabilized by vegetation contain appreciable Pm-10 and have very high dust emission potential. There is a positive correlation between the amount of Pm-10 stored in a dune and its potential dust flux. Saltation liberates loose fines stored in dunes, making them very efficient dust emitters compared to landforms such as dry lake beds and washes where dust particles are unavailable for aeolian transport due to protective crusts or sediment cohesion. In cases where large dunes do not store Pm-10 yet emit dust when active, two hypotheses can be considered:(1) iron-oxide grain coatings are removed during saltation, creating dust, and(2) sand grains collide during saltation, abrading grains to create dust. observations reveal that iron oxide coatings are present on some dune sands. PI-SWERL data suggests that low dust fluxes from dunes containing no stored dust may represent an estimate for the amount of Pm-10 dust produced by removal of iron oxide coatings. These results are similar to results from dunes in the United States. AIm To evaluate the value of pre-treatment 18F-FDG PET/CT in patients with HCC following liver *** We identified 34 patients with HCC who underwent an FDG PET/CT scan prior to hepatic radioem.o.ization at our institution between 2009 and 2013. Patients wereseen in clinic one month after radioem.o.ization and then at 2-3 mo intervals. We assessed the influence of FDG tumor uptake on outcomes including local liver control(LLC), distant liver control(DLC), time to distant metastases(Dm), progression free survival(PFS) and overall survival(oS).RESULTS The majority of patients were males(n = 25, 74%), and had Child Pugh Class A(n = 31, 91%), with a median age of 68 years(46-84 years). FDG-avid disease was found in 19(56%) patients with SUVmax ranging from 3 to 20. Female patients were more likely to have an FDG-avid HCC(P = 0.02). median follow up of patients following radioem.o.ization was 12 months(1.2-62.8 mo). FDG-avid disease was associated with a decreased 1 year LLC, DLC, Dm and PFS(P multivariate analysis, FDG avidity predicted for LLC, DLC, and PFS(all P oNCLUSIoN In this retrospective study, pre-treatment HCC FDGavidity was found to be associated with worse LLC, DLC, and PFS following radioem.o.ization. Larger studies are needed to validate our initial findings to assess the role of F-18-FDG PET/CT scans as biomarker for patients with HCC following radioem.o.ization.

The extraction of DNA for molecular analyses is often a limiting factor in terms of cost, time, and availability of skilled labor Here the authors describe a simple extraction protocol for obtaining DNA from field and greenhouse grown plants. This method was optimized for sampling mature wild sorghum populations in remote areas of Ethiopia and young greenhouse grown seedlings for genetic studies using microsatellite loci. Initially, the leaf squashes are made on Whatman FTA plant saver cards or small cards of Whatman chromatography paper. After several washes, sufficient DNA to run up to 70 PCR amplifications is eluted from a 6 mm disk. Both types of cards were equally effective for collecting genomic DNA from young and mature sorghum plants for PCR-based analyses. The use of this technology for extracting genomic DNA from seedlings and/or mature plants in situ is particularly attractive for sampling at sites that are far from the laboratory where samples are ultimately analyzed. moreover, highly skilled personnel are not required to collect DNA samples using this protocol. The Whatman FTA card is more expensive than the Wbatman chromatography paper. Therefore, without compromising efficiency, the lower cost chromatography paper can be used for DNA extraction, especially for institutions in developing countries.

中国北方沙漠和沙地是亚洲粉尘释放的重要源区,定量估算这一地区的粉尘释放量有助于评估区域大气环境质量及其气候效应.目前,对中国北方粉尘释放量的估算主要是基于模拟结果,野外直接观测数据很少.利用一种新型的粉尘释放观测仪器——便携式粉尘观测仪（PI-SWERL）,测量腾格里沙漠和毛乌素沙地若干典型地表（沙丘、干湖、灌丛沙丘、河流冲积物等）的粉尘释放通量,获得了不同地表潜在粉尘释放量的直接观测数据.结果表明,不同地表的Pm10释放通量存在较大差异,但均随摩阻风速的增加而增加.在相同的摩阻风速U＊=0.55 m/s条件下,灌丛沙丘的Pm10通量最高（0.70~10.23 mg/（m2 s））,河流冲积物次之（0.12~4.97 mg/（m2 s））,干湖湖底、沙丘等地表的通量较小（〈0.5 mg/（m2 s））.对比试验表明,破碎结壳地表释放的Pm10通量是未破碎结壳的几倍甚至几十倍;披覆松散沙粒结壳地面的Pm10释放通量高出未披覆的1~2个数量级.对比前人研究结果,PI-SWERL可以较好地反映不同源区粉尘释放的差异,对定量评估区域乃至全球的粉尘释放量等具有重要意义.

本文提出用单循环气体模拟二冲程发动机的扫气过程。文章详述使用的装置和试验程序。在这个装置上安装了11个不同的雅马哈250摩托车发动机的气缸,由试验确定每缸的扫气效率和扫气比特性。这些试验结果与同样11个气缸在不同转速、不同节气门位置时,在点火条件下所得到的功率、扭矩、空气流量、燃油消耗量和扫气效率的已知性能特性进行了比较。在几种气缸排列次序下,由模拟和点火条件下获得的性能特性之间的相关性很好。在模拟装置上的进一步试验证明:这种试验方法精确、重现性好;在模拟和点火条件下测得的扫气效率值的大小和分布之间有着很好的相关性。用 Co2和空气作为模拟气体能给出模拟实际扫气过程用的正确密度比,流量的雷诺数常在紊流区。本装置特别适用于样机研制期间改进扫气过程,也适用于确定由流体力学计算的预测值与实际试验数据之间的相关性。

oBJECTIVES: The aim.o. this study was to determine whether QRS duration(QRSd) correlates with occurrence of ventricular arrhythmia in patients with coronary disease(CAD) receiving implantable cardioverter-defibrillators(ICDs). oBJECTIVES: A QRSd measured on a standard electrocardiograph(ECG) correlates with total mortality risk in CAD patients at high risk for sudden death; however, the relationship between QRSd and risk of ventricular tachyarrhythmias(ventricular tachycardia/ ventricular fibrillation[VT/VF]) is unclear. mETHoDS: PainFREE Rx II was a randomized trial, comparing efficacy of antitachycardia pacing versus shock therapy for VT/VF in patients receiving ICDs. We retrospectively correlated the QRSd and specific ECG conduction abnormalities on the 12-lead ECG at study entry with occurrence of VT/VF in 431 patients with CAD enrolled in the trial. RESULTS: The QRSd was ≤120 ms in 291 of 431(68%) patients. Left bundle branch block(LBBB) was present in 65 patients, right bundle branch block(RBBB) in 48 patients, and nonspecific intraventricular conduction delay(IVCD) was present in 124 patients. over 12 months’follow-up, VT/VF occurred in 95(22%) patients(22%of patients with QRSd ≤120 ms vs. 23%of patients with QRSd >120 ms, p=NS). Patients with LBBB were less likely to experience at least one VT/VF episode than patients with QRSdms. Patients with RBBB and nonspecific IVCD did not differ from patients with narrow QRS complexes with regard to occurrence of tachycardias. CoNCLUSIoNS: The QRSd and ECG conduction abnormalities are not useful to predict ICD benefit in patients having the characteristics of our study population. The utility of QRSd to predict VT/VF events in patients with CAD requires further prospective evaluation.
