Anti-diabetic activity of quercetin extracted from Phyllanthus emblica ***: In silico and in vivo approaches

In this study, molecular interactions of the ligands, quercetin, gallic acid, and metformin with various diabetes mellitus-related protein targets, such as glycogen phosphorylase and peroxisome proliferatoractivated receptor gamma, were assessed. It was revealed that quercetin possesses good binding affinity to both targets. Quercetin is a major constituent of methanolic extracts of Phyllanthus emblica fruit. The antihyperglycemic effect of quercetin in streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic rats was examined. The isolated quercetin administered at a dose of 75 mg/kg body weight produced a maximum decrease of14.78% in blood glucose levels in the diabetic rats after 7 days of treatment. Furthermore, quercetin doses of 50 and 75 mg/kg were shown to significantly improve the profiles of triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein, very-low-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, and total cholesterol at the end of the study in STZ-induced diabetic rats. The administration of quercetin(25, 50, and 75 mg/kg body weight)daily for 28 days in STZ-induced diabetic rats resulted in a significant decrease in blood glucose and urine sugar levels, with a considerable rise in plasma insulin and hemoglobin levels. Therefore, quercetin is a potential drug with antidiabetic and antihyperglycemic action mediated by changes in the levels of glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides as indicated by in silico and in vivo studies.

Over the years stone matrix asphalt(SMA)mixtures have evolved significantly and research works have presented some promising *** made the paving industries to increase the usage of SMA mixtures in the pavement ***,SMA mixtures have certain challenges or setbacks,which require comprehensive *** aim of the review paper is to present some of the challenges in SMA mixtures and their mitigations *** is observed that several challenges(i.e.,aggregate gradation,stone-onstone contact,drain down and stabilizing agents)related to SMA mixtures are addressed by the *** agencies have suggested their own aggregate gradation based on their experience,location,climatic conditions and available manufacturing facilities,and they are working ***-on-stone contact is achieved with proper aggregate gradation and failure to meet the same will reduce the *** down is major concern in the SMA mixtures since it controls overall mixture ***,researchers shown out the most importance to curtail the *** researchers followed ASTM D6390 and National Cooperative Highway Research Program(NCHRP No.424)procedure to evaluate the drain down and concluded that drain down should be less than0.3%(by weight of mixture).Apart from that,researchers are trying different stabilizing agents to reduce the drain ***,stabilizing agents such as fibers and polymers have a positive ***,suitable waste and recycle products are used as stabilizing agent to reduce drain down and environmental *** of which coconut fiber has shown some promising results,however,comprehensive research is required in this *** the other hand,0.3%of cellulose fiber is working as a good stabilizing agent and can be used without conducting drain down *** review paper provides a complete knowledge about different stabilizing agents used in SMA mixtures to minimize the drain down.

Delineation of potential groundwater zones based on multicriteria decision making technique

Groundwater is the most prioritized water source in India and plays an indispensable role in India’s economy. The groundwater potential mapping is key to the sustainable groundwater development and management. A hybrid methodology is applied to delineate potential groundwater zones based on remote sensing, geographical information systems(GIS) and analytic hierarchy process(AHP) as on multicriteria decision making. For the purpose of demonstrating field application, Chittar watershed, Tamilnadu, India is studied as an example. The important morphological characteristics considered in the study are lithology, geomorphology, lineament density, drainage density, slope, and Soil Conservation Service–Curve Number(SCS-CN). These six thematic layers are generated in a GIS platform. Based on intersecting the layers, AHP method, the values for adopting the pairwise comparison normalized weight and normalized subclasses weightage were given. The normalized subclass weightage is input into each layer subclass. Then, weighted linear combination method is used to add the data layers in GIS platform to generate groundwater potential Index(GWPI) map. The GWPI map is validated based on the net recharge computed from the differences of measured groundwater levels between the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon in the year 2018. The kappa statistics are used to measure level spatial consistency between the GWPI and net recharge map. The overall average spatial matching accuracy between the two data sets is 0.86, while the kappa coefficient for GWPI with net recharge, 0.78. The results show that in Chittar watershed about 870 km^2 area is divided into high potential zone(i.e. sum of very high and high potential zone), 667 km^2 area, as the moderate one and the rest 105 km^2 area, as the poor zone(i.e. sum of very poor and poor potential zone).

Direction Detecting System of Indoor Smartphone Users Using BLE in IoT

Indoor organization user activity’s (UA) direction detection monitoring system and also emergency prediction are major challenging tasks in the field of the typical body sensor and indoor fixed sensor networks. In this paper, indoor UA based direction detection monitoring system is achieved by the combination of both the orientation sensor and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) in user’s smartphones belonging to the Internet of Things (IoT). The orientation sensor senses the actual orientation of the user and BLE transmits the sensed BLE signals to monitoring system using star topology in IoT. In monitoring system, classification algorithm is used to identify the directions of the smartphone users. The emergency situation of the user is also predicted based on signal variation instantly in real time. The user activity’s signals are captured using LabVIEW toolkit then applied to various classification algorithms such asRF—91.42%, Ibk—90.55%, j48— 85.61%, K*—73.54% are the results obtained. An average of 85% was obtained in all the classifi- cation algorithims indicating the consistency and accuracy in detecting the directions of the users. RF was found to be the best among all the classification algorithms. IoT enabled devices have high demand in near coming future, moreover smartphones users increase day by day, hence implementing and maintaining the above said system would be much easier and cheaper compared to other conventional networks.

Biochemical Characterization of Detoxifying Enzymes in Dimethoate-Resistant Strains of Melon Aphid, <i>Aphis gossypii</i>(Hemiptera: Aphididae)

The melon aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is a highly polyphagous sap sucking pest on wide varieties of crops including cotton and vegetables. It is a notorious vector of many plant viruses that are persistently and non-persistently transmitted. In nature, aphids are regulated by their natural enemies. However, chemical control remains a major management tool even though resistance to insecticides has been documented worldwide. A better understanding of mechanisms by which insecticide resistance occurs and its early detection is desirable to develop effective management strategies. The present investigation was conducted to study the development of resistance to an organophosphate (OP) compound-dimethoate, identify biochemical mechanism(s) involved in resistance and study cross-resistance to imidacloprid in laboratory selected A. gossypii strains in comparison to susceptible strains. Bioassay studies revealed that the LC50 values increased dramatically with dimethoate selection in resistant strains and the resistance ratio (RR) was 270-, 243- and 210-fold greater than that of the susceptible strains by 30th generation. Further, biochemical assays revealed enhanced activities of carboxylesterases (CarE), glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) and cytochrome P450-mediated p-Nitroanisole O-demethylase (PNOD) in resistant strains supporting their role in dimethoate detoxification. This study thus revealed that enhanced activity of detoxifying enzymes viz., CarE, GSTs and PNODs is one of the mechanisms underlying dimethoate resistance in A. gossypii collected from South India. Interestingly, the possibility of negatively correlated cross-resistance to imidacloprid was identified in three OP- resistant strains exhibiting 2.97-, 2.56- and 3.76-fold sensitivity to imidacloprid (a novel neonicotinoid). This indicated that the latter was less affected by the resistance mechanism(s) present.

Epidemiology and Sequelae of Workplace Hand Injuries at a Tertiary Trauma Care Centre

Aims & Objectives: To study the epidemiology of workplace hand injuries, to understand relation between mode of injury and prognosis, to investigate into the possible contributing factors and to study the Socio-economic impact. Design of Study: For the prospective study there were 2 sources of data: 1) Proforma which was filled by the hand surgeon and 2) A questionnaire that was filled up by safety officer. For the retrospective study case, sheets were retrieved from the Medical Records section and a telephonic or personal interview was carried out by a single interviewer. Setting: Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Parvathy Hospital, Chennai, India. Patients: A total of 419 industrial injury patients treated from January 2008 to January 2013 were included in the study. Further follow-up regarding return to work and residual disability continues. Main Outcome Measures: Personal details (Age, Gender, Handedness, Work experience, Income). Type of injury, mode of injury, day and time of injury, treatment given, disability and number of working days lost were measured. Results: Those workers who were experienced less than 6 months had more workplace injuries and the commonest contributing factor was co-workers carelessness followed by long working hours and faulty machinery. Maximum injuries occurred on Monday and morning shift. Conclusions: Constant supervision of trainees for 2 years, shorter working hours with regular breaks, regular health checkups for personnel, regular servicing of machines can prevent occurrence of hand injuries. Corrective surgery within 6 hours, systematic and protocol based physiotherapy and rehabilitation can reduce the economic loss and disability arising out of work place injuries.
