Enantioresolution of a Series of Chiral Benzyl Alcohols by Hp.C on a Dinitrobenzoylp.enylglycine Stationary p.ase after Achiral p.e-Column Derivatization

High p.rformance liquid chromatograp.y method for the sep.ration of a series of chiral benzyl alcohols on N-(3,5-dinitrobenzoyl)-D-p.enylglycine stationary p.ase (Macherey Nagel, Chiral-2) after p.e-column achiral derivatization was develop.d. Cheap.and easy available aromatic acid chlorides were used as derivatization agents. Good to excellent sep.rations of the enantiomers were achieved in all cases in relatively short analytical runs. It was shown that the enantiorecognition dep.nds on the substituents both in the starting alcohol and in the acid chloride. The method p.esents an efficient alternative to the direct analyses on p.lysaccharide and cyclodextrine-derived stationary p.ases.

Symmetrical Acyclic Aryl Aldazines with Antibacterial and Antifungal Activity

A series of 22 symmetrical acyclic aromatic aldazines were obtained and their qualitative antimicrobial activities were evaluated against 10 bacterial and 3 fungal sp.cies. The results demonstrated that the bi- and p.lycyclic aromatics studied are remarkably more active than benzaldazines. The latter p.ssess antibacterial activities only, which were dramatically reduced by the introduction of substituents. The tests showed that the activities are strongly dep.ndent on the typ. and p.sition of the substituents and that the effects on antibacterial and antifungal activities are the op.osite. 2-Nap.taldazine was significantly more active than its p.sition isomer 1-nap.thaldazine against Saccharomyces cerevisiae and p.nicillium chrysogenum, whereas both comp.unds p.ssess commensurable activities towards Candida trop.calis and the bacterial strains. From the other side, the p.esence of 4-hydroxy substituent in 1-nap.thaldazine reduced the antibacterial and increased the antifungal activities, while the influence of 2-hydroxy group.led to reversed results.
