Assessment of Nurses’ Knowledge of the Management of Pre-Eclampsia in a Hospital Setting: The Case of the Van Norman Clinic. Bujumbura-Burundi

Background: Pre-eclampsia is one of the pathologies of pregnancy that causes serious maternal and fetal complications. Good nursing management of pre-eclampsia could stabilize and limit possible maternal and fetal complication. Aim: This study aims to assess nurses’ knowledge of the management of pre-eclampsia. This is a descriptive prospective study conducted at the Van Norman Clinic over three-month period from November 1st, 2020 to January 31st, 2021 to assess the knowledge of nurses assigned to the Patient reception service, Emergency service, Gynecological-Obstetrics service and Community Medicine department on the management of pre-eclampsia. Data were treated using Microsoft Word and analyzed by Statistical Package for Social Scientists version 16 (SPSS). During the period of our study, we collected 40 nurses out of 44 nurses, which represents 90.9% (n = 40) of the nurses assigned to the Patient reception service, Emergency service, Gynecological-Obstetrics service and Community Medicine department. Among the 40 cases collected, 30% respondents did not give the true definition of pre-eclampsia. Our study also showed that 70% of nurses had not been trained on the management of pre-eclampsia and 90% had not used nursing theories in their practice while the Inquiry-Based Practice (IBP) and Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) applications were known in 7.5% of cases. With regard to the nursing management of pre-eclampsia, 62.5% of cases knew the first gestures of management while 90% of cases did not know the overall nursing management of pre-eclampsia. Last of continuing education, use of nursing theories and lack of resuscitation were the main obstacles observed in the nursing management of pre-eclampsia. For better nursing management of pre-eclampsia, emphasis should be placed on building staff capacity and executing the care plan by applying nursing theories.

Bayesian partial pooling to reduce uncertainty in overcoring rock stress estimation

The state of in situ stress is a crucial parameter in subsurface engineering,especially for critical projects like nuclear waste *** one of the two ISRM suggested methods,the overcoring(OC)method is widely used to estimate the full stress tensors in rocks by independent regression analysis of the data from each OC ***,such customary independent analysis of individual OC tests,known as no pooling,is liable to yield unreliable test-specific stress estimates due to various uncertainty sources involved in the OC *** address this problem,a practical and no-cost solution is considered by incorporating into OC data analysis additional information implied within adjacent OC tests,which are usually available in OC measurement ***,this paper presents a Bayesian partial pooling(hierarchical)model for combined analysis of adjacent OC *** performed five case studies using OC test data made at a nuclear waste repository research site of *** results demonstrate that partial pooling of adjacent OC tests indeed allows borrowing of information across adjacent tests,and yields improved stress tensor estimates with reduced uncertainties simultaneously for all individual tests than they are independently analysed as no pooling,particularly for those unreliable no pooling stress estimates.A further model comparison shows that the partial pooling model also gives better predictive performance,and thus confirms that the information borrowed across adjacent OC tests is relevant and effective.

The effects of gender-affirming hormone therapy on the skeletal integrity and fracture risk in transitioning adolescent trans girls are *** address this knowledge gap,we developed a mouse model to simulate male-to-female transition in human adolescents in whom puberty is first arrested by using gonadotrophin-releasing hormone analogs with subsequent estradiol *** was suppressed by orchidectomy in male mice at 5 weeks of *** 3 weeks post-surgery,male-to-female mice were treated with a high dose of estradiol(~0.85 mg)by intraperitoneal silastic implantation for 12 *** included intact and orchidectomized males at 3 weeks post-surgery,vehicle-treated intact males,intact females and orchidectomized males at 12 weeks *** to male controls,orchidectomized males exhibited decreased peak bone mass accrual and a decreased maximal force the bone could withstand prior to *** treatment in orchidectomized male-to-female mice compared to mice in all control groups was associated with an increased cortical thickness in the mid-diaphysis,while the periosteal circumference increased to a level that was intermediate between intact male and female controls,resulting in increased maximal force and *** trabecular bone,estradiol treatment increased newly formed trabeculae arising from the growth plate as well as mineralizing surface/bone surface and bone formation rate,consistent with the anabolic action of estradiol on osteoblast *** data support the concept that skeletal integrity can be preserved and that long-term fractures may be prevented in trans girls treated with GnRHa and a sufficiently high dose of *** study is needed to identify an optimal dose of estradiol that protects the bone without adverse side effects.

Cardiac Malformations in Congenital Hypothyroidism: A Case Report

Introduction: Congenital hypothyroidism is the most common causes of preventable mental retardation. It is associated with other births defects like cardiac malformations. Descriptions in Sub Saharan Africa are rare, justifying the present report. Case Report: We reported the cases of 3 female patients, diagnosed with hypothyroidism, presenting in addition pulmonary stenosis. The diagnosis was late in all the patients and we noticed clinical improvement under levothyroxine. Conclusion: Association congenital hypothyroidism and cardiac defect is not rare. Our patients are female with no history of consanguinity, presenting congenital hypothyroidism with a gland in situ associated with pulmonary stenosis. Systematic screening of other births defects is thus recommended in affected patients.

Diabetes during COVID-19 Pneumonia in a 16-Year-Old Girl: A Case Report in Cameroon

Background: Diabetes is a known risk factor for susceptibility and severity of COVID-19 infection. It may also be a complication of COVID-19. Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain this condition. It may be due to the effect of SARS-CoV-2 on β cells or drug-related side effects. In children, there is a paucity of data on the burden of this complication. Objective: We aimed to report a case of secondary diabetes during COVID-19 in a pediatric unit. Case Presentation: A 16-year-old girl presented with severe respiratory distress. She was treated for COVID-19 infection with antibiotics and corticosteroids. On day 6 of treatment, she developed polyuria and polydipsia. A random blood glucose test showed hyperglycaemia. The diagnosis of secondary diabetes was maintained. Conclusion: Covid-19 infection can be complicated by diabetes in children. It is essential to monitor blood glucose levels regularly.
