Behavioral differences within and am.ng populations of an African cichlid found in divergent and extrem. environm.nts

Anim.ls are increasingly faced with hum.n?induced stressors that vary in space and tim., thus we can expect populati on-level diverge nee in behaviors that help anim.ls to cope with en vironm. ntal change. However, em.irical evidenee of behavioral trait divergence across environm.ntal extrem.s is lacking. We tested for variation in behavioral traits am.ng 2 populations of an African cichlid fish (Pseudocrenilabrus m.lticolor victoriae Seegers, 1990) that experience extrem.s of dissolved oxygen (DO) and turbidity and are known to vary in a num.er of physiological and life history traits associated with these stressors. Using a com. on garden reari ng experim. nt, F1 progeny from.wild-caught parents originating from.a swam. (low DO, clear) and a river (high DO, turbid) were reared in high DO, clear water. Predator sim.lation assays were conducted to test for (1) variation in boldness, general activity, and foraging activity between populations,(2) differences in correlations betwee n behaviors with in and across populati ons, and (3) repeatability of behaviors. There was strong evide nee for diverge nee betwee n populati ons, with swam. fish being m.re bold (i.e.z leaving refuge sooner after a sim.lated predator attack) and active (i.e., spent m.re tim. out of refuge) than river fish. Across populations there were positive correlations between foraging activity and both boldness and general activity;however, within populations, there was only a strong positive relationship between foraging activity and boldness in the river population. Here, we have dem.nstrated that populations that originate from.drastically different environm.nts can produce proge ny that exhibit m.asurable differences in behaviors and their correlated relati on ships eve n whe n reared un der com. on conditions.

Due to an isolated error in the 3D sim.lation param.ters,the laser energy and intensity(calculated using the energy)values were incorrectly stated as 10.9 J and 3×10^(22) W cm.(−2),respectively,in Sections 3.3,7 and 8.The correct values are 39.8 J and 1.1×10^(23) W cm.(−2).Sim.larly,the values stated for the higher energy case,109 J and 3×10^(23) W cm.(−2) in Section 7,should be 398 J and 1.1×10^(24) W cm.(−2),respectively.

Aquatic biodiversity is being lost at an unprecedented rate. One factor driving this loss is increased turbidity, an environm.ntal stressor that can im.ose behavioral, m.rphological, and/or physiological costs on fishes. Here we describe the behavioral response of a widespread African cichlid,Pseudocrenilabrus m.lticolor victoriae, to turbidity. We used a split-brood rearing design to test if F1 offspring reared in turbid water, originating from.river (turbid) and swam. (clear) populations, behave differently than full-sibs reared in clear water. We exam.ned two facets of behavior: (1) behaviors of fish in full sib groups, including activity level and social dynam.cs collected during the rearing period; and (2) m.le aggressive behavior directed at potential m.le com.etitors after fish had reached m.turity; this was done in an experim.ntal set-up independent of the rearing aquaria. Regardless of population of origin, fish reared in turbid water were m.rginally less active and perform.d fewer social behaviors than those reared in clear water. On the other hand, when tested against a com.etitor in turbid water, m.les perform.d m.re aggressive behaviors, regardless of population of origin or rearing environm.nt. Our results suggest a plastic behavioral response to turbidity that m.y allowP. m.lticolorto persist over a range of turbidity levels in nature by decreasing activity and general social behaviors and intensifying reproductive behaviors to ensure reproductive success.

The identification of jets originating from.quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an im.ortant role in various analyses perform.d at the Large Hadron Collider,as Standard m.del m.asurem.nts and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced background.This paper describes the m.asurem.nt of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATLAS Collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated lum.nosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATLAS experim.nt.Two taggers with high perform.nces in rejecting jets from.gluon over jets from.quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirem.nts on the num.er of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other com.ines several jet substructure observables using a boosted decision tree.A m.thod is established to determ.ne the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsam.les defined by the jet pseudorapidity.Differences in tagging efficiency between data and sim.lation are provided for jets with transverse m.m.ntum.between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for m.ltiple tagger working points.

Aphid is one of the m.st destructive insect pests on cultivated plants in tem.erate regions.Their piercing-sucking m.uthparts and phloem.feeding behavior directly dam.ge crops and deplete plant nutrients.Potato(Solanum.tuberosum.L.)is one of the m.st im.ortant food sources on the planet,and several aphid species,e.g.,m.zus persicae(Sulzer)(green peach aphid)and m.crosiphum.euphorbiae(Thom.s)(potato aphid)(Hem.ptera:Aphididae)colonize potato and transm.t several econom.cally im.ortant viruses.Aphid-transm.tted potato viruses have been em.rging all over the world as a very serious problem.in potato production,inducing a wide variety of foliar and tuber sym.tom.,leading to severe yield reduction and loss of tuber quality.In this review,recent advances in understanding the interactions of potato viruses with their hosts,aphid vectors and the environm.nt are described.

3AUR Proteins as Effectors of Horm.nal and Environm.ntal Signals in Plant Growth

The plant horm.ne auxin regulates num.rous aspects of plant growth and developm.nt. Early auxin response genes m.diate its genom.c effects on plant growth and developm.nt. Discovered in 1987, Sm.LL AUXIN UP RNAs （SAURs） are the largest fam.ly of early auxin response genes. SAUR functions have rem.ined elusive, however, presum.bly due to extensive genetic redundancy. However, recent m.lecular, genetic, biochem.cal, and genom.c studies have im.licated SAURs in the regulation of a wide range of cellular, physiological, and developm.ntal processes. Recently, crucial m.chanistic insight into SAUR function was provided by the dem.nstration that SAURs inhibit PP2C.D phosphatases to activate plasm. m.m.rane （Pm. H＊-ATPases and prom.te cell expansion. In addition to auxin, several other horm.nes and environm.ntal factors also regulate SAUR gene expression. We propose that SAURs are key effector outputs of horm.nal and environm.ntal signals that regulate plant growth and developm.nt.

The im.act of air quality on the health,welfare and productivity of livestock needs to be considered,especially when livestock are kept in enclosed buildings.The m.nitoring of such environm.ntal factors allows for the developm.nt of appropriate strategies to reduce detrim.ntal effects of sub-optim.l air quality on the respiratory health of both livestock and farm.rs.In 2009,an environm.ntal m.nitoring system.was designed,developed and tested that allowed for the m.nitoring of a num.er of airborne pollutants.One lim.tation of the system.was the m.nual collection of logged data from.each unit.This paper identifies lim.tations of the current environm.ntal m.nitoring system.and suggests a range of networking technologies that can be used to increase usability.Consideration is taken for the networking of environm.ntal m.nitoring units,as well as the collection of recorded data.Furtherm.re,the design and developm.nt of a software system.that is used to collate and store recorded environm.ntal data from.m.ltiple farm. is explored.In order to design such a system.sim.lified software engineering processes and m.thodologies have been utilised.The m.in steps taken in order to com.lete the project were requirem.nts elicitation with clients,requirem.nts analysis,system.design,im.lem.ntation and finally testing.The outcom. of the project provided a potential prototype for im.roving the environm.ntal m.nitoring system.and analysis inform.ng the benefit of the im.lem.ntation.

Epigenetics of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tum.rs:A clinicopathologic perspective

Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tum.rs(GEP-NETs) are a heterogeneous group of rare tum.rs whose site-specific tum.r incidence and clinical behavior vary widely. Genetic alterations associated with fam.lial inherited syndrom.s have been well defined; however, the genetic profile of sporadic tum.rs is less clear as their tum.rigenesis does not appear to be controlled by classic oncogenes such as P53, RB, or KRAS. Even within GEP-NETs, there are no com.on oncogenic drivers; for exam.le, DAXX/ATRX m.tations are strongly im.licated in the tum.rigenesis of pancreatic but not sm.ll bowel NETs. Accordingly, the dysregulation of epigenetic m.chanism. has been hypothesized as a potential regulator of GEPNET tum.rigenesis and has becom. a m.jor focus of recent studies. Despite the heterogeneity of tum.r cohorts evaluated in these studies, it is obvious that there are m.thylation patterns, chrom.tin rem.deling alterations, and m.croR NA and long non-coding RNA(lncR NA) differential expression profiles that are distinctive of GEPNETs, som. of which are correlated with significant differences in clinical outcom.s. Several translational studies have provided convincing data identifying potential prognostic biom.rkers, and som. of these have dem.nstrated prelim.nary success as serum.biom.rkers that can be used clinically. Nevertheless, there are m.ny opportunities to further define the m.chanism. by which these epigenetic m.difications influence tum.rigenesis, and this will provide better insight into their prognostic and therapeutic utility. Furtherm.re, these findings form.the foundation for future studies evaluating the clinical efficacy of epigenetic m.difications as prognostic biom.rkers, as well as potential therapeutic targets.

Hepatocellular carcinom. surveillance:An evidence-based approach

Hepatocellular carcinom.(HCC) m.kes up 75%-85% of all prim.ry liver cancers and is the fourth m.st com.on cause of cancer related death worldwide. Chronic liver disease is the m.st significant risk factor for HCC with 80%-90% of new cases occurring in the background of cirrhosis. Studies have shown that early diagnosis of HCC through surveillance program. im.rove prognosis and availability of curative therapies. All patients with cirrhosis and high-risk hepatitis B patients are at risk for HCC and should undergo surveillance. The recom.ended surveillance m.dality is abdom.nal ultrasound(US) given that it is cost effective and noninvasive with good sensitivity. However, US is lim.ted in obese patients and those with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD). With the current obesity epidem.c and rise in the prevalence of NAFLD, abdom.nal com.uted tom.graphy or m.gnetic resonance im.ging m.y be indicated as the prim.ry screening m.dality in these patients. The addition of alpha-fetoprotein to a surveillance regim.n is thought to im.rove the sensitivity of HCC detection.Further investigation of serum.biom.rkers is needed. Sem.annual screening is the suggested surveillance interval. Surveillance for HCC is underutilized and low adherence disproportionately affects certain dem.graphics such as nonCaucasian race and low socioeconom.c status.
