Culex mosquitoes are primarily found in temperate and tropical regions worldwide where they play a crucial role as main vectors of filarial worms and arboviruses. In Recife, a northeast city in Brazil, high densities of Culex quinquefasciatus are often found in association with human populated areas. In marked contrast to another part of the city, field tests conducted in the neighborhood of Sitio dos Pintos showed that trapping of mosquitoes in skatole-baited ovitraps did not differ significantly from captures in control (water) traps. Thus, classical and molecular taxonomic approaches were used to analyze the Culex species circulating in Sitio dos Pintos. Results obtained from both approaches agreed on the cocirculation of Culex quinquefasciatus and Culex nigripalpus in three different areas of this neighborhood. What was initially considered as an unexpected failure of this lure turned out to be a more unsettling problem, that is, the first report in Recife of Culex nigripalpus, a vector of Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus and West Nile virus. Unplanned urbanization processes close to remnants of the Atlantic forest, such as observed in Sitio dos Pintos, may have contributed to the introduction of Cx. nigripalpus in urban areas.

对砖红壤施用不同的改良剂,经一年的大田试验,测定土壤的活性酸与交换酸研究不同土壤改良剂对酸性土壤酸度的影响。试验结果表明:滤泥单施与石灰单施处理能有效降低土壤的活性酸以及交换性酸的含量,有较好的降低土壤酸度的效果,而施用绿肥、甘蔗渣、羊粪以及羊粪与膨润土混施均不能有效降低土壤的酸度。

对砖红壤施用不同的改良剂,进行1a的大田试验后,测定土壤的阳离子交换量、有效阳离子交换量、盐基离子总量以及盐基饱和度来研究不同土壤改良剂对酸性土壤交换性能的影响。结果表明:施用滤泥(40t/hm2)、石灰(2.5t/hm2)以及在施用一定量的羊粪(20t/hm2)基础上施用中量(40t/hm2)或者高量(60t/hm2)膨润土的复合改良剂是有效提升酸性土壤交换性能、增加土壤盐基总量与盐基饱和度的优良措施。

AIM To determine the sensitivity and specificity of liver stiffness measurement(LSM) and serum markers(SM) for liver fibrosis evaluation in chronic hepatitis *** Between 2012 and 2014,81 consecutive hepatitis C virus(HCV) patients had METAVIR score from liver biopsy compared with concurrent results from LSM [transient elastography(TE) [FibroS can~/ARFI technology(Virtual Touch~)] and SM [FIB-4/aspartate aminotransferase-toplatelet ratio index(APRI)].The diagnostic performance of these tests was assessed using receiver operating characteristic *** optimal cut-off levels of each test were chosen to define fibrosis stages F ≥ 2,F ≥ 3 and F = *** Kappa index set the concordance *** Fifty point six percent were female and the median age was 51 years(30-78).Fifty-six patients(70%) weretreatment-na?*** optimal cut-off values for predicting F ≥ 2 stage fibrosis assessed by TE were 6.6 kP a,for acoustic radiation force impulse(ARFI) 1.22 m/s,for APRI 0.75 and for FIB-4 *** F ≥ 3 TE was 8.9 kP a,ARFI was 1.48 m/s,APRI was 0.75,and FIB-4 was *** F = 4,TE was 12.2 kP a,ARFI was 1.77 m/s,APRI was 1.46,and FIB-4 was *** APRI could not distinguish between F2 and F3,P = *** negative predictive value for F = 4 for TE and ARFI was 100%.Kappa index values for F ≥ 3 METAVIR score for TE,ARFI and FIB-4 were 0.687,0.606 and 0.654,*** demonstrates strong concordance between all three screening methods,and moderate to strong concordance between them and APRI(Kappa index = 0.507).CONCLUSION Given the costs and accessibility of LSM methods,and the similarity with the outcomes of SM,we suggest that FIB-4 as well as TE and ARFI may be useful indicators of the degree of liver *** is of particular importance to developing countries.

This work evaluated the effect of dissolved oxygen and the initial inoculum concentration on xylose reductase (XR) production by Candida guilliermondii from sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolysate. Both the parameters were studied under an experimental design 22 with triplicate at central point. The statistical analysis of the results indicated a significant negative effect on XR production from the variable inoculum. The variable dissolved oxygen also showed a negative effect on XR production. We found the maximum enzyme activity (2.5 U?mg?1) when both the factors were applied at their lowest levels. The yeast showed to be potentially capable for xylose reductase production when sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolysate was used as carbon source. Also, the results presented important information for further optimization of xylose reductase attainment.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a wide world prevalent hepatic disease, being the third greater cancer related death cause and most of the patients are not eligible for liver transplant. Palliative care is an option for, in average, half of hepatocellular carcinoma diagnosed patients and only recently the molecular targeted drug, Sorafenib, has been introduced among the therapeutic options for these patients. The physical pain comes frequently associated with progression disease (metastasis). Patients may be very fragile, with immobility, loss of interest in food and beverage intake, as well as weakness and drowsiness. Therefore, it is important that health professionals start planning care with patients and their relatives, before the end-stage disease. Informing the patient about therapeutic options guarantee a doctor patient relationship improvement and more belief on the health team.

Prognostic factors for progression of liver structural lesions in chronic hepatitis C patients

AIM: To evaluate the epidemiological, clinical, laboratory and histological variables capable of predicting the progression of hepatic structural disturbances in chronic hepatitis C patients during the time interval between two liver biopsies. METHODS: Clinical charts of 112 chronic hepatitis C patients were retrospectively analyzed, whereas liver biopsies were revised. Immunohistochemical detection of interferon receptor was based on the Envision-Peroxidase System. RESULTS: In the multivariate analysis, the variables in the age at first biopsy, ALT levels, presence of lymphoid aggregates and siderosis were the determinants of the best model for predicting the severity of the disease. The direct progression rate of hepatic structural lesions was significantly higher in untreated patients, intermediate in treated non-responders and lower in treated responders to antiviral therapy (non-treated vs responders, 0.22 ± 0.50 vs -0.15 ± 0.46, P = 0.0053). Immuno-expression of interferon receptor is not a relevant factor. CONCLUSION: The best predictors of the progression of fibrosis are age at the first liver biopsy, extent of ALT elevation, inflammation at liver histology and hepatic siderosis. Antiviral treatment is effective in preventing the progression of liver structural lesions in chronic hepatitis C patients.
